Myxoid liposarcoma is a subtype of liposarcoma characterized by the translocation of chromosomes 12 and 16, t(12;16)(q13;p11). This translocation creates the FUS-DDIT3 fusion gene which results in a fusion protein. Expression of this fusion protein leads to oncogenesis by acting as an abnormal transcription factor that regulates downstream target genes involved in blocking differentiation and accumulating lipids. Mouse models that express FUS-DDIT3 develop liposarcomas that mimic key features of human myxoid liposarcoma, demonstrating the role of this fusion gene in tumorigenesis.
