Malaria Kills Every Minute! ITN Is The Answer!

Taken from Google images on 19.05.2013 Malaria is one of the deadliest infectious diseases, with 3.3 billion people at risk of being infected and 1.24 million People died from malaria in 2010, according to W.H.O. It is caused by a single cell organism call Plasmodium (known as malaria parasite) and its common symptoms are fever, headache, chills and vomiting. The onset of the symptoms occurs 7 days or more (depending on the species of the parasite) after being infected. If not treated within 24 hours of symptoms, the disease complicates with anaemia, breathing difficulties, convulsion and death. This disease is endemic in and around equatorial regions with high humidity, high temperature and rainfall. This means both residents and visitors to these regions are susceptible. These climatic conditions help the mosquito vector to thrive and flourish. The vector harbours and transmits the parasite to its human prey during its blood meal. Sleeping inside insecticide treated bed net (ITN) is one of the effective ways to prevent infection with the malaria parasite. Lengelers (2004) meta-analysis of 22 studies, on the effectiveness of ITN found significant reduction in malaria incidence and its related deaths in and around ITN application areas compared with control areas. Explanation: I think my work satisfies all the 4 rhetorical appeals: ethos, logos, pathos and kairos because the sources of my information are credible (WHO, MFS and Professor Lengeler). Moreover I studied tropical diseases and worked in tropics for 10 years (ethos). Malaria cases increase during rainfall seasons and June/July record the highest down pour and as they are approaching, it is the perfect time to present this PSA (Kairos). It is true that mosquitoes in malaria endemic area are more likely to harbour malaria parasites and therefore mosquito biting has high probability of resulting in malaria infection (logos). Sleeping in ITN prevents one from mosquito biting and malaria (logic). Statistical figures of morbidity and mortality rate are there to convince my audience and appeal to their emotions to comply with the PSA (logos and pathos).
