Health Cover

This health cover is a good all-round hospital cover that is suitable for singles, couples or a family with dependants visiting Australia. It covers you for hospital treatment and medical costs in private hospitals that have an agreement with Australian Unity. We cover hospital treatment, doctors fees and any other specialists fees or diagnostics charges that are incurred in hospital. In addition youll get cover for emergency ambulance, when admitted or treated in hospital. Total benefits payable by Australian Unity are capped at $50,000 per calendar year for a singles policy and $100,000 per calendar year for couples and families.
This cover does not include benefits for general treatment like dental, optometry, physiotherapy, chiropractic or therapies such as acupuncture. Additional insurance cover, known as Extras cover, which offers benefits towards these services and more can be purchased at a minimal extra cost.

Up to a maximum of $3,500 per admission depending upon the procedure. Limited to a maximum of $450. Up to 3 days per admission to a maximum of $800 per day. Limited to a maximum of $600.

100% of the costs for pharmaceutical drugs administered while an admitted patient in hospital, up to a yearly limit of $5,000. 100% cover for private nursing care in lieu of hospitalisation when referred by a medical practitioner and subject to prior approval by Australian Unity. We pay 100% of the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) fee for both in hospital and out of hospital consultations. Please note that some doctors charge above the MBS fees; check with Australian Unity for advice prior to treatment. 100% of the minimum cost for government approved surgical implanted items such as a replacement knee or hip. 100% of the cost of emergency ambulance transportation for admission or treatment at a hospital. The account must be coded as emergency transportation by the ambulance service to qualify for benefits. Leave hospital early with your doctors consent and our Member Support Program will co-ordinate the services you need to recover at home, including nursing, home help, meals and childcare services.

What we will not cover (exclusions) The following treatments will not be covered under this policy: n Treatment for pre-existing conditions n Services provided outside of Australia n  Elective cosmetic surgery unless as a result of an accident or surgical scaring occurring in Australia after joining the membership n  Psychiatric and rehabilitation programs unless as a result of an accident occurring in Australia after joining the membership n Assisted reproductive services (IVF/GIFT) n Hospital accident & emergency facility fees n Surgery by a podiatrist n Pharmacaceuticals when not an admitted patient in hospital n Sterilisations or reversals of sterilisations

Waiting Periods All hospital and medical benefit entitlements are subject to waiting periods as detailed below. Benefits are not payable until completion of the following waiting periods: n  2 months All hospital and medical treatment (unless you join prior to or within 2 weeks of arriving in Australia in which case the two months waiting period is waived) n 12 months Pregnancy and birth related services What is a pre-existing condition? It is any illness, ailment or condition, the signs or symptoms of which were known, or which a medical or paramedical practitioner appointed by us considers, after examining information furnished by your doctor, and any other relevant information, were in existence at any time during the six months ending on the day on which you became insured. This is irrespective of whether you were aware of the illness, ailment or condition.

Members planning a family Members on single cover who are expecting or planning for a baby are strongly urged to transfer to a family cover upon confirmation of pregnancy. This will ensure you will be covered for the birth of the baby, and in the event of any complications found during the pregnancy, in a private hospital that has an agreement with Australian Unity, provided you have served the 12 month waiting period.

Medical Repatriation A benefit of $20,000 (included within the yearly limit) will be payable for medically necessary services and transportation back to your country of origin, if a medical or para-medical practitioner appointed by Australian Unity considers after reviewing your claim information, that it is necessary to repatriate you. The provision of this benefit is at the discretion of Australian Unity.
