My reflections throughout ROS program in SK Sri Subang Jaya.

Along my ROS program in SK Sri Subang Jaya as part of my practicum journey, I have gone through so many great experiences. It was a group project. There were four of us in the group. The group members were Logadarshini, Darshini, Rachel and me myself Presna. We were so glad to get SK Sri Subang Jaya to undergo our ROS program successfully. Our first impression towards the school was very good from all four of us based on the cleanliness. Once we enter the school main entrance for the first time, the first thought came to our mind was that, Wow..!! The school compound is very clean and tidy. Even though the students are still at children level but they were well trained on how to take good care of the school cleanliness. The same thing goes to the school classrooms, canteen, washroom and etc too. All were very clean and in good condition also. We have noticed that the school toilets were awarded as the third place winner for the well managed and clean school toilets by Majlis Perbandaran Subang Jaya. The school canteen was also very clean and tidy. The tables and chairs were arranged neatly and looks very convenient place for the students to spend their recess break. But at the same time, we have noticed that the food sold in the canteen were mostly heavy food and less nutrients such as rice with chicken curry, fried chicken and etc for morning recess time at 10.00am. I think that these were not good menu for the students during school hours. The school environment looks very suitable and really encourages the students to undergo their learning process conveniently and peacefully. There were beautiful murals in the school walls. Some of the students excellent paintings and drawings were pasted on the school walls as well to be viewed by the visitors. This creates a good impression by the visitors towards the teachers and students as well. This indirectly encourages the students to perform well in the school activities. Even though it was a small school but we could see clearly that the school was well organized by looking at the school environment. On the first day, we went to the school around 9.00am. Then, we met the school principal, Pn.Maznah binti Zaini in the school office. She welcomed us happily with a sweet smile on her face. We introduced ourselves to her one by one. She was so kind and helpful too. She gave us a brief introduction about the school. She told us that there were almost 480 students and 35 teachers in the school. There were majority of Malay students and a minority of Indian students in the school. There were only few

Chinese students in the school and they were countable. There was only one session in the school which was the morning session for Year 1 Year 6 students. Each standard has only 2-3 classes. There were two classes for each Year 2 and Year 4; and three classes for each Year 1, 3, 5 and 6. Normally, the school starts at 7.30am and ends at 1.30pm from Monday to Thursday. However, every Friday the school ends at 12.30pm. Then, the principal asked us to go to the schools meeting room (Bilik Mesyuarat) to discuss among us what were the details we needed and going to observe during our ROS program in the school. She asked us to list down all that appropriately in a piece of paper so that it would be easier for her to guide us. Then, we discussed among us and listed down the information that we were needed and also what were the details we were going to clarify about the school so that we could undergo our ROS program successfully. After did a complete list, we met the principal again in her office. She classified what we have listed into few categories and wrote the name of the teacher in charge of each category in the school. She asked us to meet those teachers to get more further and clear details. She gave us the day and time of when to meet those teachers during their free time. She gave us a proper guidance on how to collect the information that we needed. She provided us some of the schools pamphlets too to be as our reference. She borrowed us some of her books based on the school educational system to collect extra details from the book. Apart from that, we met the school counselor, Pn.Noor Aniza in the school counseling room for further details as the principals guidance. She gave us more information about the school. She gave us information about the school activities, system of education, school operation system, school management, co-curriculum, school history, school organization and etc. She was a good and supportive counselor too. We jot down the information that was given by Pn.Noor Aniza. The details were very clear and sufficient too. We were able to identify how a school actually runs through her clear explanation. She showed us the agendas of the previous school activities and also the proposals of the next upcoming activities. Moreover, as mentioned by the school principal, we met Pn.Kumari Nirmal Ashok, Ketua Panitia Bahasa Inggeris to collect information about the teaching and learning process of English subject in the school as all of our group members are majoring in English. She explained to us about MBMMBI educational system, pedagogical skills, teaching materials, activities and assessments used during the lesson. She told us that Year 1 and Year 2 follows KSSR while Year 3-6 follows KBSR educational system. She added that Year 3-Year 6 students would undergo oral test 3 times a year and all the students from Year 1-Year 6 would sit for the school examination 4 times a year. She added that every Saturday

there would be extra classes for Year 6 students. She showed the text books used to teach the students. She showed us the yearly plan of teaching English in the school also. She told us that most of the teaching and learning process would be student-centered and teacher-centered sometimes. She added that the activities were normally depends on the topics. She mentioned some of the activities too such as role play, quiz, spelling, dictation, reading in groups, individual reading, group discussions and etc. She said that those activities would focus on reading, writing, speaking, grammatical aspects or listening skills. She shared some of her experiences as a Ketua Panitia Bahasa Inggeris to us. She showed some of her minutes of meetings too. We were able to judge her as a dedicated teacher by the way she talked and gave us as much of information as she could. Furthermore, we were given a great opportunity to sit back and observe one of the Year 4 English class. We have noticed that each and every class in the school contains less than 30 students only. It was a great experience to observe how the teaching and learning process going on in the primary schools. We were able to differentiate the behavior between primary school students and secondary school students as we have gone through 3 months of experiences in a secondary school as a practicum teacher. We have observed how the teacher conducts the class and also the class management by the teacher. We also noticed how the very young students respond to the teachers questions and their participation in the lesson conducted by the teacher. We have noticed the different level of abilities between primary and secondary school students. We have noticed that the teachers must give any instruction step by step and very clearly to the primary school students compared to the secondary school students. We have come to a conclusion that as a dedicated teacher, we should be very careful to come up with a very simple, interesting and effective lesson plans through our observation. Very importantly, the introduction part of the lesson should be very interesting as to make the students to concentrate and take part in the lesson. The teaching materials should also be suitable to the age of the students and also related to the topic as well to achieve the learning outcomes of a lesson successfully. Overall, we have learnt new knowledge on how to be a dedicated teacher and how to handle with very young aged students. We were so glad that we were able to know the basic education system in the primary school level in Malaysia through this wonderful ROS program. We have found that being a teacher is a challenging and wonderful experience too no matter it is a primary or secondary school teacher!!!
