By: Wade Varesio babies). Mother works at the Department of Justice. Born in a place called the community, date unknown. Father works as a nurturer (a nurturers job was to tend to newborn

Has a 7 year-old sister named Lily. Jonass father brings a troubled baby home for extra care; the babys name is Gabriel. At the ceremony of twelves Jonas obtains the job of Receiver of all memories. a) As Receiver of all Memories Jonas has to protect the community by obtaining all of the memories from the public. i) Jonas has to do this because The Council of Guardians (government) fears that the public would obtain too much knowledge and therefore leave the Community/ or destroy the Community. ii) Jonas is able to do this because the previous Receiver of all Memories (called the Giver) transmits the memories to him by putting his hands on his back and replaying the memory, and Jonas experiences in the memory.

Jonas decides to leave the community for the place e called Elsewhere (everything that lay beyond the village) for the following reasons: a) Sameness: Everyone in the community wears the same thing, nothing is unexpected, everything is planned; such as marriage, your job, and even the food you eat.

b) No color: Everything in the community is colorless, so everything appears in grayish tones. Except for the fact that Jonas has the power to see beyond, therefore he can see some colors that the rest of the community are not allowed to see. c) Curiosity: Jonas knew some of the environment that lay beyond the village, but wanted to see everything, and also to experience it; such as riding a sled down a hill. d) The troubling truth about release, and that fact that his parents lie to him. i) The truth about release which in the book is portrayed by when you are old or are a troubling baby that you will be taken to a happy place called Elsewhere. But the Giver shows the truth to Jonas because his father had to release a newborn twin, because identicals are not allowed in the Community. So the Giver shows Jonas the video and it turns out that release is not a trip to Elsewhere it is simply death by a syringe injection. Jonas journey to Elsewhere a) Jonas Journey started out hastily by fleeing in the night. b) But right off the bat his journey took a detour: Jonas decided to take Gabriel because he was to be released (death by syringe) in the morning. c) The community sent heat seeking search planes to find Jonas and Gabriel, but Jonas transmitted cold memories to Gabriel so they would become cold and therefore the planes would not be able to find them. d) At the end Jonas and Gabriel are nearly dead when they have to trudge up a hill, but for some reason Jonas felt that beyond the hill was elsewhere, when they reached the top of the hill Jonas finds the sled that was in his first memory that was transmitted to him.
