Reflection 5% MOHD ASYRAF BADLI MP111218 Throughout this course, I have learnt a lot of new knowledge; analyzing and

examining the language; English in which is not my first language. Since I am not the native speaker, it makes the course more interesting as we learn to analyze other people natives language which is not the one that we use in our daily communication. Analyzing the language forms and functions especially in spoken discourse is really exciting. When I did my project in which I analyzed the use of corrective feedback in classroom communication, I had a lot of fun because in determining whether the corrective feedback used is recasts or comprehension check or other type of corrective feedback. Additionally, it is more interesting when I analyzed my own classroom interaction in which I was the teacher during the observation been recorded. Having done the project, I have learnt that discourse analysis has helped me in finding the best method or technique in stimulating and assisting my students who are in rural situation to speak using the target language. I believe that even though we can apply the best technique in class, it does not mean that the students will learn at their best. This is because, we as the educators also need to know their background, social and culturally. This is to make sure that we can implement the best solution as to unleash their best in learning. As for my case, my students are from rural area, so, they actually do not have much opportunity in using the target language in their communication. If they do so try to use the language, the surrounding would not that approve them to practice the language as this is not their first language. So, they lack of motivation in using the language. Thus, by learning how to analyze the classroom discourse, I will be able to identify the

pattern of the interactions and hopefully know to tackle their problems as to promote them to practice the target language. Learning this course, also has given new knowledge regarding the language used in the advertisement. It is quite intriguing when we analyze the advertisement; the way the advertisement been presented, what and how the language been used in presenting its item. Before learning this course, I always think that advertisement always use incorrect language and weird. Yet, after analyzing the discourse of an advertisement, now I know that language can always be presented in many ways as long the message can be passed through. Discourse analysis also taught me that there is creativity in advertisement language. Overall, this discourse analysis has given me new insight and more new knowledge about analyzing the language. There are many things that we can analyze when we know how to; even a political speech can be an interesting one to be analyzed. Even though, I have learnt a bit about this course during my degree time in oversea studies, but, I actually did not know that this is what actually discourse all about; analyzing the patterns of the language. As for me, I hope that this new knowledge of discourse analysis will help me in searching for the best possible method in motivating my students to speak and use the target language; English more effectively.
