In this comic strip we can see that there are two bordered and vertically large panels with

a gutter in the middle. The context of the two panels suggests the bombings that have been done in Iran due to the conflict between Iraq and Iran. In Persepolis however, Iraq is portrayed as the "bombers" and Iran was there "main target" (seen in page 103 first panel) for the bombings. Between the panels shows a gutter in which a reader can imagine the process from one panel to the next. The relationship between the first and the second panel suggests a scene-to-scene relationship. This is because the scene changes from when the family is running up and down to the basement, due to the bombing sirens, and to the moment when they are calling their relatives to check if they are still alive or ok. The first panel is very interesting as it shows an almost abstract image to possibly evoke the emotion of confusion. This panel however, is very picture specific, as long as the reader knows the context from previous pages, the reader would understand what is happening in this panel. The action for the family members to run up and down the stairs is signified by the images of a human shadow running up the stairs. Motion of the shadows is also outlined by lines to signify that they are in a hurry to get back to the surface. The use of a shadow or a dark figure may signify the darkness of the situation as well as the darkness of the basement they are hiding in. We can also see several icons present in this panel. The teardrop icons seen at the top of the first panel can signify two things. The first reason for the icon is to signify the intensity of the moment regarding how much exercise they are doing, therefore resembling sweating. The second is the anxiety one might have about the situation. Not knowing if their relatives are ok makes the family anxious, hence the use of the icon. This panel also uses a very long staircase; this might be because a person may feel as if a very small staircase is very long due to the anxiety they are feeling. This is because usually, stairs to the basement is not as long as the stairs represented in this panel and time seems to not pass when someone is anxious. For the second panel, there are several elements that are significant. To some extent the second panel can be considered a Montague as it shows many family members calling each other. With the use of one panel with many family members calling each other evokes the emotion to the reader of anxiety and confusion. The black background can also signify anxiety and confusion. Some elements of this panel are duo-specific such as the smiling women on the phone saying that she is fine. There are also elements of additives, the man on the phone, shows sense of anxiety but the dialogue "No one's answering" adds to the emotion of the image. Overall these two panels have many elements that can be discussed and proves to be a very creative representation of the bombings.
