SITUATION
Hawkchurch lies amidst beautiful unspoilt country on the Devon / Dorset border, where little has changed for centuries. Much of the surrounding countryside is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, where strict planning controls protect its special character. The views from the property are quite outstanding, with a patchwork of fields, pretty villages and lightly wooded farmland. Hawkchurch itself is centred on its lovely old church and comprises many period houses at its heart. Both the nearby small towns of Axminster and Ilminster both provide good day-

to-day amenities and Taunton, the County Town of Somerset, is also within easy reach with a good shopping centre, excellent range of independent schools including Taunton School, Kings and Queens Colleges, Kings Hall Preparatory School and Richard Huish Sixth Form College. The much acclaimed Colyton Grammar School lies within a short drive, likewise Perrott Hill Preparatory School near Crewkerne is within easy reach. Other notable schools in the West Country include Exeter School, Maynards and St. Margarets in Exeter, Blundells in Tiverton, Hazlegrove, Millfield and Sherborne.

The property is in easy reach of the coastline at Sidmouth, Branscombe, Beer and Lyme Regis, the latter having intriguing shops, restaurants and the famous Cobb. This coastline is now well known as The Jurassic Coast.

barn, fondly known as The Scouts Hut , traditional loose boxes, coach house and a further substantial threshing barn. The cottages belonging to Wyld Court have all been modernised and at present provide an income from holiday letting but could equally be useful to accommodate guests, family members or livein help.

HISTORICAL NOTE
The majority of Wyld Court dates from Elizabethan times, although there has been a house on the site since mediaeval times, when the property belonged to Cerne Abbey, prior to the Dissolution of the Monasteries by King Henry VIII in 1553. As was the fashion at that time, the house was built in the shape of the letter E, out of respect to Queen Elizabeth I. It is known that following his defeat at the battle of Worcester in 1651, King Charles II fled to Dorset (at that time Hawkchurch was in Dorset) planning to travel by boat to France. It is said that he spent a night at Wyld Court, and that the western wing was pulled down by the Roundheads in an attempt to find him; thus the front of the house now resembles the letter F.

THE PROPERTY
Justifiably this Elizabethan manor house is Listed Grade II* of architectural or historical importance and enjoys spectacular views from all principal rooms. Pevsner asserts that the house dates from c.1600 and indeed this is substantiated by a date mark of 1593 RM on the guttering the RM standing for Robert Moore, whose coat of arms is inscribed above the door.

The intrinsic fabric of the house has remained intact through successive generations, and the majority of the architectural embellishments are still in place. The house, however, has undergone a complete and meticulous restoration programme in recent years, which has resulted in a perfect blend of period detail and all modern living. There is extensive oak panelling, mullioned windows, flagstone floors and impressive fireplaces with exquisite wood carvings above. Of particular note are the fireplaces in the sitting room and principal guest

bedroom, known as the Kings Bedroom. The drawing room is a magnificent reception room, built in the 19th century and provides an excellent entertaining area of the house. The beautiful gardens with the intriguing chess board topiary, formal lawns and beautifully stocked herbaceous borders provide a perfect setting for the house and include various terraces to capture the sunlight throughout the day. Substantial outbuildings expected with a property of such stature include a beautiful stone
