hope you’re as excited as I am to make this semester the best b&w has ever had!
Last semester brought a lot of good changes, and I want us to keep improving. To me,
improvement is more than just looking better. It’s new marketing ideas, creative stories
and angles, and innovative designs.

The wonderful thing about being a b&w designer is that you’re not limited to designing.
You’re welcome and encouraged to contribute story ideas ­— and even write

were ecclectic to say the least. Every
feature spread looked completely
different from every other. Diversity
is good, but each page of a magazine
is only part of the whole. The pages
should blend together to create a
holistic image.

I want Blue & White’s image to be

simple and classy, but not stuffy. I
want it to look like a professional
magazine designed by students who
take industry trends and make them
their own.

When I became Art Director, I

worked to redesign the magazine
with those goals in mind. I took ideas
from some of my favorite magazines,
like O Magazine, InStyle and Yoga
Journal, and I encourage you to do
the same in your designs.

Infuse each design with your

personal style, but use the guidelines
that follow to make sure it blends
seamlessly into the b&w style.
We’re consistent with our
headline designs. The size and
color can change, but the
typeface must be Baskerville
Old Face or Jayne Print or
a combination.You’re also free
to design a graphic or use a
picture in your headline.

grayscaled. Sound scary? It’s not. You
just need PhotoShop.
• First, how big does the picture need
to be?
• Unless you know you want the picture
to be huge (take up a page or a
spread), 7x5 is a good size. If it needs
to be bigger, make it bigger.
1. Drag your photo(s) into PhotoShop.
2. Click Image>>Image Size
3. Type in a reasonable size for width
and heigth -- whatever seems like it
will fit the space
4. Type 300 for DPI -- this is VERY
