ASSIGNMENT SUBMISSION AND ASSESSMENT __________________________________________________________________________ OUMH2103 ENGLISH FOR SCIENCE AND TECHNICAL PURPOSES MAY 2013 __________________________________________________________________________

INSTRUCTIONS TO STUDENTS 1. This assignment contains only ONE (1) question that has two parts PART A and B that is set in the language of the printed module for the course. 2. Answer in English.

3. Download the language version of the assignment template concerned from the MyVLE for preparation and submission of your assignment. Your assignment should be typed using 12 point Times New Roman font and 1.5 line spacing. 4. Your assignment should be between 1100 and 1400 words excluding references. The number of words should be shown at the end of your assignment. Do not copy the assignment question and instructions to your answer. 5. You must submit your assignment ON-LINE via the MyVLE. Refer to the portal for instructions on the procedures to submit your assignment on-line. You are advised to keep a copy of your submitted assignment for personal reference. 6. You can submit your assignment ONCE only in a SINGLE file. 7. Your assignment must be submitted between 09th - 17th July 2013. Submission after 17th July 2013 will NOT be accepted. 8. Your assignment should be prepared individually. You should not copy another persons assignment. You should also not plagiarise another persons work as your own.

PENILAIAN / EVALUATION This assignment accounts for 40% of the marks for the course mentioned and shall be assessed based on the Rubrics or Answer Scheme. You would be informed of the assignment mark before the Final Semester Examination commences. PLAGIARISM : MARKS DEDUCTION Warning : The submitted assignment will automatically undergo a similarity check. If plagiarism is detected, marks would be deducted as follows: Assignments with 10 - 30 % overlap with others: 20% deduction from the total marks scored. Assignments with 31 - 50 % overlap with others: 40% deduction from the total marks scored. Assignments with more than 50% overlap with others: Zero mark would be given.

ASSIGNMENT QUESTION PART A (20 marks) Recent research shows that the consumption of junk food is a major factor in poor diet and this is detrimental to health. Some people believe that better health education is the answer to this problem but others disagree. What is your opinion? 1. Your essay should contain the following: An introductory paragraph (some background information about the topic and a thesis statement- an introductory sentence in the body of the essay). Body of essay (Three body paragraphseach explaining the effects of junk food. For example, one paragraph focuses on health effects, the second focuses on psychological effects and the third focuses on the social effects. External reading is necessary to explain the effects of junk food on humans. All outside sources used to further explain each effect must be properly referenced). Concluding paragraph (a restatement of the thesis/ prediction of future consequences).

2. Your paragraph will be evaluated using the rubric on page 5.

PART B (20 marks) The following diagram shows how greenhouse gases trap energy from the Sun.

1. Analyze the content of the above diagram. 2. In a 500 words long, write an essay describing the information shown below. 3. Your essay should contain the following: Topic Sentence A body of the paragraph describing how greenhouse gases trap energy from the Sun. Concluding sentence 4. Use appropriate transition signals in your writing. 5. Your paragraph will be evaluated using the rubric on page 6.

ABOVE AVERAGE 3 The introduction clearly states the main topic and previews the structure of the paper, but is not particularly inviting to the reader. The main ideas of both paragraphs are clear. Most supporting details are appropriate and relevant. Most outside sources are properly cited/ referenced. The conclusion is recognizable and gives closure to the essay. There are clear attempts to use cohesive devices to link details but in one or two places, writing appears incoherent. The writer makes minimal errors in grammar, structure and spelling that does not affect the readers understanding. EXECELLENT 4 The introduction is inviting, states the main topic and previews the structure of the paper. MARKS 2

BODY OF ESSAY/ REFERENCING

The main ideas in all paragraphs are not clear. There is a strong evidence of plagiarism.

There is one clear, wellfocused topic. Main idea stands out and is supported by detailed information. All outside sources are properly cited/ referenced. The conclusion is strong and leaves the reader with a feeling that they understand what the writer is "getting at." Details are placed in a logical order and the way they are presented effectively keeps the interest of the reader. CATEGORY TOPIC SENTENCE WEIGHT 1 LOW 1 The topic sentence does not introduce the topic or it may not be a complete sentence or has not been included. Writing contains a lot of subject-verb agreement mistakes, spelling errors, verb usage errors, and other grammatical errors that make the paragraph difficult to read and understand. The process is not written in the passive form. FAIR 2 The topic sentence is not clear and/or it is not apparent. The main idea is not clear, and there is a seemingly random collection of information that does not aid in the understanding of the process being discussed. Many details are not in a logical or expected order. There is little sense that the writing is organized. ABOVE AVERAGE 3 The topic sentence states the topic and/or the focus of the paragraph. The main idea is somewhat clear but the supporting information still inadequate. There are examples to aid in the understanding of the process being discussed. Only some details are not in a logical order or expected order, and thus to a certain extent distracts the reader. EXECELLENT 4 The topic sentence clearly and effectively states the topic and the focus of the paragraph. There is one clear, wellfocused topic. The steps provide detailed information and examples to aid in the understanding of the process being discussed. Details are placed in a logical order and the way they are presented effectively keeps the interest of the reader. The writer makes a few or no errors in grammar or spelling that distract the reader from the content. Process is written in the passive form. MARKS 4
