TASK 5 TRANSPORT

Security Measures to be taken to Safeguard the Truck, the Load and the Driver Preparation for Departure We have to take security measure from the beginning of our trip. If possible observe the loading of our trailer. There should be no suspicious onlookers during the cargo loading. And we have to make ensure that route and immediate staging area appears clear. All Tractor/Trailer access panels/doors are locked and seals remain intact /uncompromised. Some intelligent criminals know about electronic tracking systems and how to dismantle them therefore it is better to check the system regularly, and notify dispatch when it's not working. We need to keep our Communications (radio/wireless and GPS) equipment checked for function/operation. In terms of loading, we have to check the space availability of the truck and avoid overloading the truck beyond her maximum capacity of payloads. All stacking must be properly done and the protective cover sheets must be applied. All ropes and lashes must be well tightened. The Truck itself must be in a superb condition. All kind of repair and maintenances must be properly done before the trip. Here are some tips for checking our trucks: Tires must be well inflated and no damages in Wheels and Stem Caps No damage and leakages in Duo-cone seal area No leakage underneath the truck Brakes must be working 100% and no leakage in Differentials, Brakes, Transmission systems All suspensions must be in good condition No leakage and damage in Engine Area Engine oil and other lubricants must be filled Radiator must be of no leakage and debris and filled with coolant water Air Filter and fuel filter must be in proper condition Batteries must be fully charged and working Fuel Tank must be full and have no leakage All Lighting systems must work fully Fire Extinguishers must be properly installed Wind Shield and mirrors must be clean and free of debris Mileage and other indicator, switch and controls must be working well

How to keep safe on the way between locations

It is better to be mindful of any possible surveillance our truck since it leave our premises. Normally it is noted that the criminal surveillance often begins at, or within a mile of origin. Therefore it is recommended to avoid parking alone rather than to follow company stopping and parking procedures and avoid any unscheduled stops! We have to instruct our drivers to report any suspicious activities to local police or if an emergency, call 911. It is better to stay awake and alert and remain particularly observant for suspicious activities in and around refuelling locations, railroad facilities, bridges and tunnels. It is mandatory to keep all Tractor/Trailer doors and access panels locked and windows rolled up. It is also important to maintain regular communications with the base and station and it is better to vary the route when possible. We have to warn our drivers not to discuss about cargo, destination, or trip specifics with people they don't know or on open channels even other drivers. If the truck is needed to stop at a traffic light or in traffic, be aware of anyone approaching the vehicle. It is recommended to go directly to your delivery point without making any stops. How to keep safe when stopping the truck We have been told that there is a freight interchange compound on the road from Jumna to Teni that is used by a number of hauliers. When we park in the stopping location, the truck should be left in a secure parking lot or truck stop if possible; if not, we have to find someone who can watch the vehicle. The driver should perform a quick walk-around to check the vehicle for foreign objects after all stops. The driver must takes care of leaving the truck and ensure the rig is turned off and that all doors and access panels remain secure. If necessary, we have to use padlocks on cargo doors. The driver must look around and become familiar with the surroundings when leaving the truck. It is unsafe to leave the vehicle running with the keys in it therefore it is better to shut off the engine and lock the doors when the vehicle is left. If at all possible, do not stop in "hot spots" - unsafe or high crime areas. It is always suggested to park in areas where other truckers are present. Do not stop on dark roadways or in deserted areas while waiting to make deliveries or refuelling. We have to instruct the drivers not to eave extra keys in the vehicle. Drivers should take the bill of lading and/or other paperwork when they leave their truck to eat, sleep or use the restroom. Drivers should utilize a no-stop policy while making local transportation. Avoiding Theft and Loss According to the learning material, it is highly recommended to have insurance coverage for both load and vehicle but just having insurance does not release the transporter from taking necessary precautions to avoid theft and loss. A theft can be happened if a thief intending to steal a loaded vehicle knows the attractiveness of the cargo, and has the opportunity to access it. And he must have enough time to steal and get away before detection. We have to use alarm and immobiliser systems which are available to deter theft of the vehicle when the truck is parked and particularly for closed rigid vehicles, the actual load. We have to use tight sheeting or covering that will reduce temptation if our vehicles are open- backed. Another way to protect the cargo is to use seal which are the main method of securing single consignment loads in closed vehicles. There must be a number on the seal that is annotated to drivers' documentation; the seal cannot be removed and replaced. If seal is broken and items lost, we can know that the cargo is accessed and stolen. How to Avoid from Hijackings We have to warn the driver to be watchful immediately after picking up a load because most hijackings occur within a few miles of a pickup location. It is better to avoid the deserted road since Interstate on-ramps and off-ramps are locations most often used by highjackers. We have to be mindful of the following vehicles which have 3 more male people and if we have any suspect of their intention we can contact the police station nearby or call 911 immediately. We have to keep suspicious of individuals asking us to stop as a result of an alleged traffic accident. In a situation if we feel doubtful about whether accident occurred, drive to a police station or to a well lit busy location before stopping. We have to give instruction to our drivers that if they believe they are being

hijacked, try to keep the truck moving and not to struggle against the armed men because it is too much risky. Safety of life is more important than anything. Sending Information We have to send information about the estimated departure time/date and estimated arrival time/date to our colleagues from Chagong who will receive the truck and cargo.
