Motion Picture Industry Offers abundant opportunities for not just economic gains, but for political cohesion and social mobilization Employs millions of Nigerians Instrument for mobilization and nation building Means of conveying the rich cultures and tourism potentials of our country to the outside world Alternative means of revenue generation for the country and contributes immensely to the nations GDP Phenomenal and remarkable growth in the movie sector, and as a result, Nigeria is the largest in Africa and now ranked second in the world after India in terms of content production The roles of the federal government of Nigeria, through its agency, the Nigerian Film Corporation (NFC), and public and private initiatives have been very critical. Professionalization to mitigate the unfortunate phenomenon where the industry has become an all-comers affair The motion picture profession will therefore be practiced with the highest ethical, commercial and artistic standard Reduce distortions and dysfunctions in the industry Integrate and align the industry to the larger industrial sub-sector of the national economy Become responsive to the needs of both government and the stakeholders alike Motion Picture Practitioners Council of Nigeria In its effort and determination to adequately regulate the motion picture industry in Nigeria, the Nigerian Film Corporation has pursued the formation of the Motion Picture Practitioners Council relentlessly. Presently, the Draft of the Bill for the establishment of the Council has been completed by the Federal Ministry of Justice and forwarded to the Federal Ministry of Information and Communications. Reasons for the Establishment of MOPIPCON To uphold standards and ethics in the motion picture practice To determine who are motion picture practitioners To determine what standard for knowledge and skills are to be attained by persons seeking to become registered as motion picture practitioners and reviewing these standards from time to time To regulate and control professional practice in the motion picture industry

To promote the rights and privileges of motion picture practitioners in the lawful exercise of their functions; and To inquire into complaints about the conduct of any motion picture practitioner and the conduct of any person or organizations towards the practitioner, and exercising powers conferred by law in respect of such complaints. There is no gainsaying the fact that the motion picture industry of Nigeria, no doubt, is in dire need of a dedicated regulatory body to ensure professionalism and afore-mentioned reasons.
