ACT ONE OVER BLACK WE HEAR: BOY (V.O.) When the dreamer dies... What happens to the dream? EXT. WOODS - NIGHT Moon light pierces through the branches. A pour of rain falls down -- woods seem peaceful; at a stand still, until a slight breeze kisses the trees and suddenly-IAN, (17) a debonair teenage boy, breaks through the darkness. RUNNING WITH GREAT SPEED. Running with great adrenaline and fear in his eyes, he maneuvers over rocks and branches. Ian looks over his shoulder, but no one is there. He continues running forward when-IN A FLASH: A TOWERING WALL OF FIRE SPROUTS OUT IN FRONT OF HIM. He falls backwards. Eyes wide open. How the hell did that happen? Ian gawks at the wall of flames that blocks his way. He recovers and takes one more look around the woods. Still no one in sight. Then suddenly from behind-IN A FLASH: A BLACK STEAL ROPE WRAPS AROUND HIS THROAT. As Ian GASPS for air, he attempts to break free. But no luck. The rope is too strong. With every move Ian makes, the rope GRIPS TIGHTER AND TIGHTER. The struggle can be seen through Ians eyes. The hope he is losing. His eyes begin to tear when-IN A FLASH: IAN IS ROUGHLY YANKED BACKWARDS. BEING DRAGGED LIKE A COWBOY FROM A HORSES STIRRUP. WITH ONE FINAL SCREAM, IAN REACHES OUT TO US, AS HE GETS SWALLOWED INTO THE DARKNESS.

EXT. HOLLOW CREEK - MORNING On the rural outskirts of a small Oregon town called Hollow Creek. A town where everyone knows everyone and the occasional spooky, and strangely convenient fog fills the streets. The main street road, surrounded by local owned shops and restaurants, leads directly to CITY HALL (An old fashion Victorian building that implicates the old soul of the town). The roads that sprout out from the main road lead to Victorian homes and individual plantations for the few local citizens. In the distance we see the MARINA, the BOARDWALK, and the Gulf. A town with a mysterious, yet welcoming atmosphere... I/E. CAR - CONTINUOUS Driving down the main road are THE GALLOWAYS. Taking in the surroundings of the town. MUSIC PLAYS. NOLAN GALLOWAY, early 40s, driving with a warm smile on his face. Holding his hand, and sitting in the passengers seat is his wife, MARYANNE GALLOWAY (42). As Nolan turns to his wife, we see the calm that emanates from both of them. A loving family starting a new life in a new town. Nolan looks into the rearview mirror and we finally see, IAN GALLOWAY. The boy from the first scene, asleep with his head leaned against the window. NOLAN Ian. Were here. Ian awakes and for the first time looks out to see his new home. EXT. GALLOWAYS HOME - MORNING A french style home, with a veranda wrapped around, towers over the GALLOWAYS as they exit the car. Neighbors and woods on each side -- This is WOODBORO LANE. As Nolan grabs some luggage out from the trunk, Maryanne and Ian examine the house.

3.

IAN (to Maryanne) Mom, you grew up here? MARYANNE In Hollow Creek, yes. In this house no. IAN By the way, I still think Hollow Creek is a really creepy name for a town. Nolan, with luggage in hand, walks up next to his family. NOLAN You and I both kid. A family Kodok moment as the Galloways stand before their new life. NOLAN (CONTD) Well, what are we waiting for? Come on, I have to get down to the station and you son, have school. Nolan heads first into the house, followed by Maryanne. But right before Ian enters, he senses something. Someones watching him... Ian turns towards the street road, and thats when he sees-A DARKLY HANDSOME YOUNG MAN, standing across the street, shirtless on his morning run. We will come to know this young man as the charming and devilish, DYLAN LAYNE (18). Ian sends a hello wave towards Dylan, but he doesnt respond. Dylan puts his earbuds back in and continues on his daily run, as Ian enters his home. EXT. COUNTRY ROAD - MORNING - MOMENTS LATER Long. Winding. Lined with thick forest. Running to the techno beat of his music, Dylan appears down the road. He runs towards us with great intensity. Dylan certainly has great stamina and will power. Right before he reaches us, he takes a hard left and heads into--

4.

EXT. FOREST - CONTINUOUS Dylan breaks through the tree branches and runs down a dirt path -- The same dirt path that he runs through every day. He continues to run in between the trees, until he reaches-EXT. LAYNES BOARDING HOUSE - MORNING An affluent turn-of-century home set deep in the woods and enclosed by steel gates. A long driveway greets Dylan as he runs up to his home. INT. LAYNES BOARDING HOUSE - FOYER - SAME Dylan enters through the large wooden doors and into the grand FOYER. The home was built with old fashion architecture, yet its decorated with modern amenities. Dylan takes a look around. No one home. He heads up the lavish stairs to the second floor. INT. DYLANS BEDROOM - MORNING A mature looking room with a large bed fit for a king. The walls are lined up with endless rows of bookshelves. An OLD STONE FIREPLACE rests along one of the walls. And to top it all off, an old oak desk rests in front of a gorgeous arched window, that over looks the backyard of endless woods. Dylan enters and immediately begins taking off his clothing. He makes his way to a door on the opposite end of the room. INT. DYLANS BEDROOM - BATHROOM - SECONDS LATER Dylan stands under the streaming jets of his shower. Later. MAN (V.O.) Master Layne? Dylan turns to the door.

5.

INT. DYLANS BEDROOM - SAME Dylan, with just a towel on, exits his bathroom. CHARLES, the familys ancient butler, stands by the window with a firm posture. CHARLES Good morning Master Layne. Dylan makes his way to his night stand, where he fiddles around with his phone. DYLAN (lost in his phone) Is Victoria still asleep? CHARLES No sir. You mother left shortly after you went on your run. DYLAN Where did she go? CHARLES Shes at the Patronas residence. This grabs Dylans attention. He leaves his phone and makes his way closer to Charles. DYLAN What is she doing there this early in the morning? CHARLES She had a meeting with the mayor. DYLAN What about? Charles swallows. CHARLES Im not allowed to say, Master Layne. DYLAN Charles, Master Layne was my father. And hes no longer here, so I think we should just leave that name in the past, along with him. Dylan cleans up Charles, patting his shoulders and fixing his already combed grey hair.

6.

CHARLES (uneasy) Yes...Dylan. Dylan takes a step back. Thinking. DYLAN Actually, lets go back to Master Layne. It makes me feel more like Batman. Charles bows his head in agreement. DYLAN (CONTD) And you know, I can just order you to tell me what my mother is up to, but thats no fun. (beat) So if she wants to play this game, Ill let her... But its gonna cost her. All of the sudden Dylan becomes emotionless as he stares deep into Charles eyes. DYLAN (CONTD) Youre bleeding. ON CHARLES AS BLOOD BEGINS TO POUR OUT FROM HIS NOSE. DYLAN (CONTD) Poor Charles, youre hurt. Charles looks down at his abdomen as BLOOD begins to slowly stain his shirt. How is this happening? DYLAN (CONTD) You have to be more careful, Charles. You never know when you might just... Drop-And in that instant, Charles drops to the floor. DYLAN (CONTD) --and die. As the words leave Dylans mouth -- Charles DIES. ON CHARLES as we focus in on his face. In the background we see Dylan drop his towel and head for his closet. And we are all left staring into the eyes of a deadman and wondering, What the hell did we just witnessed?

INT. GALLOWAYS HOME - KITCHEN - MORNING Maryanne and Nolan are unpacking boxes that fill the counter tops and floors. NOLAN --I just dont think it was a good idea. We shouldve gone somewhere else. They will find us again and we wont be able this time. Maryanne stops and turns to her husband. MARYANNE Nolan, everything will be alright. (beat) They wont find us. Were like leaves in the woods here. Plus, they cant even get into this town. Nolan with an uncertain look does all he can -- nods in agreement. NOLAN But you still need to tell him. MARYANNE I dont think we-Just as Maryanne is about to finish, Ian walks into the kitchen dressed and ready for school. IAN Still dont know why you guys are making me go since its a Friday. But Im ready, so lets go. Nolan and Maryanne glace at one another. A look that says many things... NOLAN (beat) Ian, we need to tell you something. IAN What is it? Nolan stares at Maryanne -- We have to tell him. MARYANNE Nolan. Dont. Ian eyes his parents. Getting worried.

8.

IAN Whats going on? Silent. Until Nolan finally speaks. NOLAN Dont you think its a little embarrassing being dropped off by your parents? I mean, youre a senior now. Nolan reaches into his pocket and pulls out a set of car keys. NOLAN (CONTD) (handing over keys) Here. Its from grandpa. Ian takes the keys and hugs Nolan in excitement. IAN Are you kidding! (beat) Wait. Grandpas here? MARYANNE Since were closer to the city now, he wont have to be in the home. NOLAN He gets here tomorrow night, but he sent his things over from storage so they get here first. (re: car keys) He thought youd might like his old baby. Said that it will get you the girls around town. And I agree. Nolan winks at Ian. Maryanne smacks Nolan upside the head. IAN Where is it? NOLAN Out back in the barn. Have fun and Dont run anyone over. And with that, Maryanne and Nolan watch on happily as Ian runs out the back door full of joy. MARYANNE (calling out) Be careful!

EXT. HOLLOW CREEK HIGH SCHOOL - MORNING A small town high school. Nothing special. Just real. A BLOOD RED DODGE CHALLENGER enters frame, driving across the parking lot. We dont see the driver. The car slowly passes through other arriving STUDENTS. Slowly a few people start to turn, noticing the arrival. Is this Ians new car!? The car parks and out comes the driver -- DYLAN. SECONDS LATER The attention is no longer on Dylan, but on Ian who is entering the parking lot -- driving an OLD RUSTY JEEP. Ian parks right next to Dylans car. As Ian gets out, Dylan inspects him with his eyes. Ian catches Dylans stare. After a moment of silence -IAN Hi. DYLAN (uninterested) Hello. And before Ian can speak another word, Dylan walks away. Ian takes one look around -- Hes alone in the parking lot. He SIGHS. Steeling himself for the day. A SCHOOL BELL RINGS. INT. HOLLOW CREEK HIGH SCHOOL - HALLWAY - MORNING A typical high school hallway, packed with students who would rather be in bed than at school. Some make their way to their first class of the day, while others stand by their lockers gossiping with their friends. But one girl grabs our attention. Shess a gloriously, amazingly, epic-ly beautiful young girl. Elegant and ageless, in a hanging on the wall of the Louvre kind of way. Shes standing alone, busying herself with her locker. This alluring girl is EMILY (17). Even though Emily is remarkably captivating, our attention shifts to, KATHERINE BLAKELY (18). Katherine is walking down the hallway like shes on a runway in Milan. Shes pretty in a manufactured way. Hair, make-up, wardrobe, shes done to death. Bit of a queen bee persona.

10.

KATHERINE Emily! Emily turns to see her best friend approaching. Katherine comes up to Emily, embracing her, holding her tight. KATHERINE (CONTD) How are you doing? Are you okay? EMILY (rehearsed) Yes Kat. Im fine. Its been a week. KATHERINE Thats good to hear. Katherine is genuine in her own way. She truly cares. Emily, once again, busies herself with her locker. KATHERINE (CONTD) So... Are you still going to the bonfire tonight? EMILY Im not going to avoid him Kat. So yes, Im still going. (beat) Now come one. Were late. Emily shuts her locker and proceeds down the hall alongside Katherine. And just as they make their way down the hall, Dylan waltzes in through some doors. KATHERINE (whispering to Emily) And even if you tried you cant avoid him. Dylan joins the girls. KATHERINE (CONTD) Hey Dylan. DYLAN Good morning Katherine. Dylan switches his glance down at, his ex-girlfriend, Emily. DYLAN (CONTD) Hello Emily.

11.

EMILY Hi. Awkward silence. DYLAN We better head in before Mrs. Smith hangs us. As the group begins to turn down the hallway, Ian enters through the doors. The group disappears into a classroom. Ian makes his way down the hallway. INT. HOLLOW CREEK HIGH SCHOOL - CLASSROOM - MORNING The teacher, MRS. SMITH, 60s, is walking up and down desks, between the students. Shes droning on about Literature. Edgar Allan Poe to be specific. MRS. SMITH Along with The Raven, one of his most famous poems was A Dream Within A Dream, in which Poe asks the question, Is all that we see or seem, but a dream within a dream? A FEMALE STUDENT interrupts her. FEMALE STUDENT So like that movie with Leo from Titanic? MRS. SMITH Yes, just like Inception. And just some life advice Miss Williams, cute becomes dumb in an instant. As Mrs. Smith makes her way back up to the front of the class, Dylan enters, followed by Emily and Katherine. MRS. SMITH (CONTD) Better late than never. Take your seats. EMILY Sorry. Mrs. Smiths waits for the group to take their seats. They all sit in the very last row next to one another, and thats when she notices -- an EMPTY DESK next to Dylan.

12.

MRS. SMITH (to Dylan) Wheres the forth misfit toy? Dylan turns to his left and sees the empty desk. He stares back at Mrs. Smith and SHRUGS: I dont know. MRS. SMITH (CONTD) Well, back to the lesson. Where was I? Dylan glances over to his right, past Katherine who is secretly TEXTING, and onto Emily. She catches his stare and SHRUGS as well. Just by their look they can tell what each other is thinking. FEMALE STUDENT Inception. MRS. SMITH I think you mean detention Miss Williams. See you after school. Thanks for reminding me though. (beat) Pop quiz. The students all react: really!, What did we do?, etc. MRS. SMITH (CONTD) Come down. Its just a simple question to see who was listening. Who can tell me what year A Dream Within A Dream was published? IAN (O.S.) 1849. Everyone in the room turns to the source of the voice -- Ian standing by the door with a YELLOW PAPER IN HAND. Everyone is starring at him, even Dylan who chewing on his pencil. MRS. SMITH And who might you be? Ian walks over to Mrs. Smith and hands her the YELLOW PAPER. MRS. SMITH (CONTD) (reading paper) Ian Galloway. Welcome to Hollow Creek. Take a seat. Ian makes his way to the back of the room and sits, next to Dylan who proceeds to chew on his pencil uninterested.

13.

MRS. SMITH (CONTD) And just to make sure you have it right for the test, the poem was published in 1850. IAN (without thinking) Youre wrong. The students, along with Mrs. Smith, turn to Ian. Stunned. MRS. SMITH Excuse me? IAN Um. The poem was published on March thirty-first. 1849. Mrs. Smith watches Ian with astonishment. IAN (CONTD) Edgar Allan Poe wrote the poem after the discovery of gold in California in 1848. Thats why he references golden sand, and-Ian sees Mrs. Smith starting to become frustrated. IAN (CONTD) -- And Im gonna stop talking now. (beat) Sorry. MRS. SMITH Everyone. Pencils out. Essay due at the end of class. The discovery of gold. As the students argue with Mrs. Smith, Ian sinks in his desk. Embarrassed, but for the first time we see Dylan crack a smile. And just as fast as it came, the smile leaves his face. Emilys purse vibrates. She slides out her phone. The text reads: FROM KAT -- NEW KID IS A HAWT-E & SMART! Emily turns to Katherine and just smiles. She agrees. Dylan turns to Ian and speaks his second words of the day to him. DYLAN Thanks dumbass.

14.

EXT. CEMETERY - DAY A sprawling, ornate cemetery filled with enormous mausoleums, and rows and rows of well-tended tombstones. This town is rich in history, and its dead are revered. MARYANNE (O.S.) Never thought I would back here. Back to the place that I tried so hard to runaway from. Find Maryanne standing in front of a tombstone. She seems as if shes conversing with an old friend. A FORGET-ME-NOT IN HAND. MARYANNE (CONTD) But I think its all going to be okay. Except, I havent told Ian everything yet. They found us in Vancouver. We decided to come back since they cant enter into this town. Ian will be safe here. Hes a great kid. You wouldve been proud. A closer look reveals that the tombstone is labeled: DEMETRIOUS HOLLOW -- LOVING FATHER AND HUSBAND. ANGLE THROUGH A NEARBY CRYPT Someone is watching Maryanne. Lurking. She looks up, noticing. Maryanne places the flower on the tombstone and turns to leave, when she bumps into-VICTORIA LAYNE. A fierce women in her mid 40s. Hair, dark as night and lips red as blood. She walks up behind Maryanne. VICTORIA Heard you where in town. Maryanne turns. They know each other. A dark past that can be seen through their eyes. MARYANNE Victoria. Maryannes and Victorias words are loaded. They reveal a history. Not a particularly good one. VICTORIA Staying long?

15.

MARYANNE Yes actually. My family and I moved into the old Ravens home. VICTORIA Oh yes. They left shortly after the fire. Just like you. Maryannes eyes soften. A brief flash of vulnerability. That of a frighten little girl. But it doesnt last. MARYANNE I should go. Ill leave you alone with your husband. (beat) And his son. Reveal that next to Demetrious tombstone, is another tombstone labeled: DORIAN HOLLOW -- A LOVING SON Maryanne begins to walk away. VICTORIA You should stop by city hall and see Eleanor. Maryanne stops in her tracks. Victoria has her attention. VICTORIA (CONTD) I had a meeting with her this morning and Shes dying to see you in person. She was surprised you called her for a favor. (beat) Time really does heal all wounds. Maryanne turns and eyes Victoria. Bitch. MARYANNE Goodbye Victoria. Maryanne turns and walks away, leaving Victoria grinning. But before Maryanne can get far -VICTORIA (calling out) Stop by her husbands grave on your way out too. Im sure shed appreciate it. Maryanne continues. Ignoring her. Walking away.

RANDAL (40), sits on top of a lab table, in the middle of a complex lesson. Piercing blue eyes. Stubbly chin. Hes a suave man who is more of a friend to his students than a teacher. A complex drawing of a molecule is on the board. MR. RANDAL Okay. Let me try to explain it again. Since the last two times Claire and Sarah were to busy discussing tonights festivities. He turns to look at TWO FEMALE STUDENTS in the front. MR. RANDAL (CONTD) How many of you have cars? Half the class RAISES their hands, including IAN who sits next to a WALL OF WINDOWS alone. MR. RANDAL (CONTD) Okay. If you open up the hood of a car you will notice the engine has many parts to it. Just like car engines, atoms also have parts-ON IAN. EMILY So why Hollow Creek? IAN My mom was born here along with her mom and her mom before that. I guess after seventeen years she finally got homesick. Also my dad is the new sheriff. He transferred from his old station. KATHERINE Wait, your moms family was born here? IAN Yeah? KATHERINE Oh my god, that makers her a native to the town! IAN A native? EMILY The last of the towns original founders. Dylan, over there, is a native too. Thats why he thinks hes a king. KATHERINE Thats so cool that youre a native. IAN I was actually born in Vancouver. KATHERINE Oh. Thats cool too. IAN I guess.

30.

Emily giggles. ANGEL ON TRAVIS AND DYLAN Playing pool. Both of them very aware of Emilys table. TRAVIS Dude, I think shes into him. Dylan stares at the table, but tries to hide it. IAN I like to write. Emily lights up. KATHERINE So does Emily. Emily and Ian share a bonding moment. Dylan makes his way for the booth just as Kim arrives with the tray full of drinks. IAN Im sorry? EMILY Why? Its not like you set the fire. (beat) I dont understand why people say sorry. Its kind of pointless. Ian doesnt know what to say. EMILY (CONTD) Dylans dad died in the fire too. Along with his little brother. Thats probably why hes a dick sometimes. He even has the evil step mother and sister. Hes a messed up Cinderella. IAN Messed up Cinderella? EMILY I should correct that. He was a messed up Cinderella. He was in the church when it caught fire. His step mother and him were the only ones to survive. Typical story, he grew up in therapy and such. IAN Im sure he means no harm. EMILY Hes sweet once you get to know him. Emily smiles, Shes thinking of Dylan...

34.

Behind her is the MARINA and old restaurants under renovation. She reaches the end of the boardwalk and sits on a bench facing the dark horizon. Waves CRASH against the boardwalk. The night air whipping all around. A MAN appears behind her. The same man outside of the Galloways home with the RED GLOVES. The same man that somehow killed Ians mother. A pour of rain falls down. IAN breaks through the darkness.
