After you install Agent, please consult the Release Notes in the online help for more details. Select menu option Help | Release Notes, or see the Release Note s on our web site at: http://www.forteinc.com/release/ INSTALLING AGENT Begin by pressing the Next button... When prompted, select the location where you want Agent installed. We recommend that you use the default location unless you are an advanced user. If there is already a copy of Agent in that location it will be upgraded. If not, then a n ew instance of Agent will be installed. UPGRADING TO AGENT 4.2 FROM AGENT 4.0 OR AGENT 4.1 You can install Agent 4.2 directly over your instance of Agent 4.x. As with any upgrade, you should first back up your existing data. Note: You may revert to Agent 4.0 or 4.1. However, note these two issues: Multipart messages downloaded in Agent 4.2 are incompatible with previous ver sions of Agent. If you revert to an earlier version you will need to download thes e headers again. Domain contacts in your Agent 4.2 address book (which are routing addresses) will appear as contact records, not domains, when you revert. UPGRADING TO AGENT 4.2 FROM AGENT 3.x You can install Agent 4.2 directly over your instance of Agent 3.x. As with any upgrade, you should first back up your existing data. For users upgrading from Agent 3.0 or Agent 3.1, Agent 4.2 will automatically cr eate personas based on your Agent 3.0 or 3.1 folder properties. For all users A gent will upgrade your address book. (The old address book will be left unchang ed, but is not used in Agent 4.2.) If for some reason you want to revert to Agent 3.x you may do so, but after doin g so you should check your settings for posting messages in the Options dialog a nd the Folder Properties dialogs. You should also review the settings for any pe nding messages in either the Drafts folder or the Outbox folder. You will also

lose access to new items such as property schemes. UPGRADING TO AGENT 4.2 FROM AGENT 2.0 OR AGENT 1.x You can install Agent 4.2 directly over your old instance of Agent, but we recom mend that you make a separate copy first. Agent 4.2 is NOT backwards-compatible with version 2.0 or 1.x. We STRONGLY recommend that you back up your Agent dat a files before upgrading to Agent 4.2. Make sure that you do the upgrade on a c opy of your existing Agent files. Also, if you want to upgrade and merge multiple copies of Agent we urge you to r ead the help topic "Upgrading Multiple Instances." RUNNING AGENT 4.2 FOR THE FIRST TIME - NEW USER When you first run Agent, you can choose to use it in one of these ways: You can purchase a registration key from Forte to enable all of Agent's featu res. You can try out all of Agent's features for 30 days free. At the end of the trial, you can either purchase a registration key, or you can continue to read your mess ages in Agent, but online operations will be disabled. After you have selected how you want to run Agent, the program will prompt you f or the information it needs to operate. Once you have supplied the necessary se tup information and Agent is operational, press F1 to display the online help. You may want to start by reading the Getting Started topic. Simply click the lin k to "Getting Started - New Users" on the Introduction page. RUNNING AGENT 4.2 FOR THE FIRST TIME - AGENT 2.0 OR AGENT 1.x USER If you are a user of Agent 2.0 or Agent 1.x then you have the same options for u sing Agent as described above for new users.
