Week 4 already of what is again proving to be a fantastic term. Thank you to all the parents/carers who have provided their on-going support, for your engagement and willingness to work in partnership with us in the education of your children. We really do appreciate the enormous effort you go to in making sure your children are school ready, that is they have the necessary equipment, wear the school uniform and understand the school rules and processes. Last week I received a letter from the Premier concerning the Premiers Summer Reading Challenge. Congratulations Uluka Luscombe, Cody Wals and Bailey Wals for taking part. Children also had the option of fundraising for The Multiple Sclerosis Society of Western Australia which Uluka Luscombe did. Thank you and congratulations Uluka for fundraising for this very worthy cause. School Board Since we became an Independent Public School in 2011 we have operated under the support and direction of a School Board. Being an Independent Public School has enabled us greater flexibility in a number of areas, the most significant has been in staffing where we are able to recruit staff specific to the unique context of our school. The School Board is responsible for endorsing the school budget, Business Plan, participating in reviewing the schools performance and determining satisfaction levels of the school community. Currently the School Board is developing a Parent Satisfaction Survey, this survey is conducted biannually, the last being in 2011. Later this term you will receive the survey to complete, we want to know what we are doing well and what we can improve. The School Board will analyse the results and put forward recommendations and suggestions for how we can continue to improve our school. In order for us to get good feedback on our school I urge all to complete the survey when you receive it, the more we get back the more valid the data we collect. There are twelve people on the School Board consisting of Parent, Community and Staff representation: The Board Chair - Lisa Hindle; P&C representative Lucy Wellstead; Parent Representatives Suzanne Peacock and Ryan Humphries; Community Representatives Peter Watson, Terry Eaton, Gail Linton; and Staff Representatives Maxine Augustson, Christine Davidson, Maria Christensen, Barb Jeremic and Julie Hughes. All School Board Representatives have a specific role to play, in later newsletters we will provide you more information on what these roles are. Attendance: Congratulations goes to Pre Primary and Year 3 students and parents, they have the highest percentage attendance for weeks 1 and 2 of term 2. Our school has been implementing the Positive Behaviour in Schools Program and as a part of that program the children have created four character which they have named Locky Legends. This Friday the students will have the opportunity to come to school dressed as their favourite Locky Legend. There are four Locky Legends based on the Acronym MLPS (Mount Lockyer Primary School), each one representing specific values and the school rules. They are: M Major Mutual Respect L Lil Life Long Learning P PB Personal Best S Sash Safe and Happy School The class with the highest percentage of students who come dressed as their favourite Locky Legend will be awarded a prize. So get on board everyone and lets see if we can have everyone dressed as their favourite character. The assembly on Thursday will be hosted by Room 11. Maxine Augustson Principal

I am looking for someone to take over from me by the end of this year. As the co-coordinator, I monitor our Safety Houses and Businesses in the Lockyer area once a month and send a report to Perth. We currently have 2 houses and 2 businesses. I also organise some activities for the school children during National Safety House Month in September and attend the P&C meeting once a term to keep them up to date. We are also looking for more people to be Safety Houses around our school area. The role of the Safety Householder is to assist children in need by offering them help and protection. In non-emergency situations such as bullying, frightened or lost children, the Safe House person contacts the childs parents whilst offering assistance to the child. In emergency situations the Safety House person will call the Police and the childs parents whilst offering protection to the child. If you would like to become a Safety Householder please contact me (my number can be obtained from the office) or contact Safety House WA Inc. on 9343 7511 for more information. Thanks, Tanya Van De Laar

Program for Children with Social Anxiety A team of researchers (the BRAVE Team) at Griffith University and the University of Queensland is investigating internet-based programs for children suffering from social anxiety. Social Anxiety is extreme shyness, or fear of speaking or performing in front of others. The BRAVE Team is seeking children aged between 8 and 12 years to take part in an internet-based treatment study. The treatment program involves 12 online sessions for children and 8 online sessions for parents, with each session taking approximately an hour to complete. Families are charged a oneoff fee of $120 to assist in covering treatment costs. Families will also be asked to complete questionnaires and telephone interviews, but will receive a rebate of $25 in vouchers each time they complete a post-treatment assessment. For more information contact the BRAVE Team: Phone: (07) 3735 3312 or 3735 1807 Facebook: www.facebook.com/braveforanxiety Email: brave@psy.uq.edu.au Website: www.exp.psy.uq.edu.au/socialanxiety Night Time Bedwetting (Nocturnal Enuresis) Bedwetting can be a highly embarrassing problem which can stop people participating fully in many of the enjoyable activities of life. It can lead to avoiding school camps and holidays and present difficulties with friendships. Many children who suffer bedwetting have been told they will grow out of it however there are a small percentage of teenagers and adults who have not. School Health nurses offer an Enuresis (Bedwetting) Program for children and young people from 6 years of age to 12 years. This involves the use of a mat and alarm to help the person to wake when needing to go to the toilet at night. The program takes between 8-10 weeks and is free. For further details please contact your School Nurse or Great Southern Population Health on 98427500. HEAD LICE WHAT ARE THEY? Head lice are tiny parasitic insects that live in human hair near the scalp. Anyone can get them. Head lice can spread between people who live, work or play together. They crawl and move by direct hair-to-hair contact. They are not a sign of poor hygiene and have no preference for clean or dirty hair. Infestations are common throughout the school year. HOW TO FIND AND TREAT HEAD LICE The lice are difficult to see and can run fast, so are easy to miss. 1. Comb dry hair with a mix of hair conditioner and eucalyptus oil. 2. Comb sections of the hair with a fine tooth comb. 3. Wipe the combings on a paper towel and look for lice or live (darker) eggs. 4. Comb every part of the head 4 or 5 times. Repeat over the next 10 days. 5. Twice daily vigorously comb or brush hair 10 times forwards, backwards and to each side. This breaks the legs of live lice and helps break the cycle. OR Use a commercial medication product and/or a Robicomb available from chemists. WHEN ARE STUDENTS EXCLUDED FROM SCHOOL? When they have live lice or live eggs (dead eggs are white, live are brownish and close to the scalp). Students must be checked on re-entry. WE NEED YOU! Can you spare two hours to help out with our NitBuster team? No special skills needed, just time and eyes! Contact the school office 9841 1166. NEWSLETTER QUIZ Q: Which two year groups had the highest attendance in weeks 1 & 2? A:

MANAGING STUDENT BEHAVIOUR

The key to this approach is that the child is given a choice at each step to follow directions or face increased consequences. Students making GOOD CHOICES are acknowledged for their efforts. For students making POOR CHOICES the following consequences apply ~
STEP 1 Student refuses to follow directions. Verbal warning. STEP 2 Student still refuses to follow directionsIn-class consequence eg Time Out area. STEP 3 Student still refuses to follow directionsOut-of-class consequence eg Buddy Class. STEP 4 Student still refuses to follow directionsRED CARD is sent to the office. Parents will be requested to attend school. SUSPENSION Students will be immediately suspended for verbal abuse of staff and/or violence towards staff or students.

WHAT IS BULLYING? Bullying is when a student or group keep picking on another student. They try to hurt them physically or emotionally. The behaviour is deliberate and repeated. A fight or disagreement between equal students is not bullying. HOW TO STOP BULLYING Tell an adult, it is not dobbing to ask for help. Both victim and those bullying will be counselled and supported. Do not be a by-stander; if you witness bullying try to stop it or report it. IF YOU ARE BULLYING Step 1: Warning Step 2: In school isolation and counselling at recess and lunch, parents will be notified Step 3: For continued breaches students will be suspended.

RE-ENTRY FOLLOWING SUSPENSION Students returning from suspension must be accompanied by an adult and will attend the Intervention Centre (Room 20) where an Individual Behaviour Management Plan will be developed and implemented.
