RIDING

for the

Johnathan Francisco (10)

As he began his journey from duPont Manual to the duPont Mansion in Green Oaks, Delaware for a cyclocross competition, Johnathan Francisco (10) tried to psyche himself up.

Prior to the Oct. 14 race, Francisco had prepared extensively, and on the morning of the competition, he awoke with a strong desire to win. After a start that left him third from the back of the cycling group, Francisco funneled his energy into finishing the race. He won fifth place. Nothing beats coming into a sprint at the end of a race, descending a

mountain at ridiculous speedsthe fastest I've gone is 60 miles per hourcresting a hill, or going as hard as you can, Francisco said. Francisco began the sport with his father at a criterion race in downtown Louisville five years ago. As he got older, he wanted to learn more about the different styles of the sport. With a strong desire to be an advanced cyclist,

Francisco acquired a coach and joined teams that would help him improve at each individual style, including the cyclocross group Red Zone Cycling, which was ranked number one in the country for three years. Riding took up the majority of Franciscos free time, but after he finished eighth in a national championship and was selected to race in Izegem, Belgium

over winter break, he thought he couldnt ask for a better reward. Anything can happen, he said. You could be ahead by a ton or crash and be left out. If you stick with it, a lot of it becomes psychological. You think youre working really hard but you have to realize that everyone else is working just as hard, so you just have to think that most of the stuff is in your head.
