Clarity: Eighty percent of success comes

from being clear on who you are, what you believe in and what you want.

Competence: You can't climb to the next

rung on the ladder until you are excellent at what you do now.

Constraints: Eighty percent of all

obstacles to success come from within. Find out what is constraining in you or your company and deal with it.
For those who like to drink cold water, this article is applicable to you. It is nice to have a cup of cold drink after a meal. However, the cold water will solidify the oily stuff that you have just consumed. It will slow down the digestion. Once this "sludge" reacts with the acid, it will break down and be absorbed by the intestine faster than the solid food. It will line the intestine. Very soon, this will turn into fats and lead to cancer. It is best to drink hot soup or warm water after a meal. A serious note about heart attacks - You should know that not every heart attack symptom is going to be the left arm hurting. Be aware of intense pain in the jaw line. You may never have the first chest pain during the course of a heart attack. Nausea and intense sweating are also common symptoms. 60% of people who have a heart attack while they are asleep do not wake up. Pain in the jaw can wake you from a sound sleep. Let's be careful and be aware. The more we know the better chance we could survive. A cardiologist says if everyone who reads this message sends it to 10 people, you can be sure that we'll save at least one life. Read this & Send the link to a friend. It could save a life. Concentration: The ability to focus on one

thing single-mindedly and see it through until it's done takes more character than anything else.

Creativity: Flood your life with ideas from

many sources. Creativity needs to be exercised like a muscle; if you don't use it you'll lose it.

Courage: Most in demand and least in

supply, courage is the willingness to do the things you know are right.

Continuous learning: Read, at the very

least, one book a week on business to keep you miles ahead of the competition. And just as you eat and bathe, organize your time so you spend 30 minutes a day exploring email, sending messages, going through websites, because like exercise, it's the only way you can keep on top of technology. If you get away from it, you'll lose your edge.

Aboy and a girl were playing together. The boy had a collection of marbles. The girl had some sweets with her. The boy told the girl that he will give her all his marbles in exchange for her sweets. The girl agreed. The boy kept the biggest and the most beautiful marble aside and gave the rest to the girl. The girl gave him all her sweets as she had promised. That night, the girl slept peacefully. But the boy couldn't sleep as he kept wondering if the girl had hidden some sweets from him the way he had hidden his best marble. Reflection: This simple story gives us a simple lesson that he who does evil expects evil. This lesson applies to all stages/domains of life may it be professional for familial. If you don't give your hundred percent in a relationship, you'll always keep doubting if the other person has given his/her hundred percent.. Give your hundred percent to everything you do and get peace of mind.

The rights and duties of a community are defined on its nature, aims and objectives of existence. Muslim being the single largest minority community in India living in a stage of statistic condition .The degradation can be seen from morality to economic prosperity. This degradation and decline are also approved by the justice Sachar committee report. Why this has happened so? Have the Muslims forgotten their aims and objectives? Have they realized the vast and fast changing scenario of the world? Have they realized the making of relation based on economic gain than religious brotherhood? Have they realized that so vast community of more than 170 million could not go ahead without a strong leadership, proper planning, united stand and some sort of understanding with other communities living in India? The present degradation reminds again and again the need of aims and objectives to Indian Muslims. In every Friday prayer the Muslims used to listen that they are the best among the best who are in this world for the befits for others, call others for the path of Allah and stop the people from wrong doing. In the light of these objectives, Muslims are not performing own duties. They are killing each other like wild animals on pray in the forest. The killing of lacks in Syria, the destruction of the people of Iraq, the destruction of Afghanistan, Somalia, Palestine and Sudan all are evidences that how much the Muslim community has forgot the lesson. The governments of many countries are witnessing the destruction to prove them loyal to unjust international order implemented by the UNO and other international bodies. Muslims just for the sake of gold coins are not trying to stop the bloodshed in the Islamic world. They forgot that without peace there is no development. Could they give any example that anywhere where there is continuous slaying of people have achieved progress and development? Even without securing the neighborhood no nation could develop. Realizing the importance of this Thomas Munro the president of United States declared the Munro Doctrine which states that The occasion has been judged proper for asserting, as a principle in which the Bakhabar builder. They are men of action. They are force behind power. The old guides and youth marches. The example is India. What about the Islamic world? Could they not develop their system of justice to deal with so called terrorist? Could not they help these strayed youth to return to main stream of the society? The need of hour is to start a campaign against this injustice and raise the voice for all the unfortunate youth who are branded terrorist and living in jail. The people of Muslim world united themselves and approach to UN Security Council, Amnesty international and Powerful Arab league to pursue the case of innocent Muslims around the world. Without ending this project of terrorism in the Muslims world, terrorism cannot be ended in other countries around the world. And the destruction of the Muslims countries would continue until the entire structure of the government not collapse for which the rule of the present government stands. In other world these rulers are digging tunnel for own government and own people in long run. The world of Islam could stand against this injustice done everywhere with the youth of Islam. Dont let the Islamic brother hood to shatter for economic gain. As one Hadith of Hadrat Abu Musa al-Ashari (may Allah be pleased with him), relates that the Holy Prophet Muhammad (may Allahs blessings and peace be upon him) said: The bonds (of brotherhood) between Muslims are like parts of a house; one part strengthens and holds another. He crossed the fingers of one hand between those of the other (to illustrate the point). (Bukhari and Muslim) .Another Hadith Hadrat Numan bin Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him), relates that the Holy Prophet Muhammad (may Allahs blessings and peace be upon him), said: The Muslims, in their mutual love, kindness and compassion are like the human body: when one of its parts is in agony, the entire body feels the pain, both in sleeplessness and fever. (Bukhari and Muslim). They could stand against any nation by adopting the strategy of OIL EMBARGO. If they could not stand powerful nations of the world then they could do easily against third world where to appease the other powers the Muslims youth are

rights and interests of the United States are involved, that the American continents, by the free and independent condition which they have assumed and maintain, are henceforth not to be considered as subjects for future colonization by any European powers. This was simply a threat to European powers to not start any war in American continents. What about the Leader of Arab world? What about the ruler of Iran? Whether we accept it or not this is fact that Saudi Arabia and Iran are now two poles of the Islamic world, without meeting these two poles, no peace and prosperity could be achieved in Islamic world. How long we used to say to the common people that there is no difference between Shia and Sunni? But the fact is that divide exits. There is no problem if they have gap but at least for the sake of Islam they should agree on Munro like doctrine for Islamic world for no violence, no death, no insecurity, no poverty and no illiteracy. Muslims around the world are victims of the so called global terrorism. In every country which is not Muslim branding Muslims youth terrorist or forcing them on the path of terrorism. They are putting them in prison without trial for long. In many cases the arrested youth were acquitted after 10 t0 15 years without any charge. This is painful. Muslims have not any complain but what about the condition of other Muslim nations which just for sake of their innocence handing over thousand of youths to other nations by branding them terrorists. Thousand are living in unknown prisons around the world. Muslims ruler forgot that the youth are might of nation. They are real

targeting. The market of Arab world, the oil and investment are pillar of many fast rising countries. Their stand will save the community from deadly catastrophe and would give cause of unity. Their stand will force the culprit to allow the youth of Islam to do service for their nations and play important role for the advancement of humanity around the world. In the present world scenario, no Muslim nation could match the technological and educational advancement of Indian Muslims, the professionalism, the honesty and dedication which they showed in the building of Arab world and rest of the world are an example. America is so powerful not because producing the well developed human resources but the migration of the best brain of the world. The multi-national companies owned by American Israeli are getting best human power not from Israel or America but from the other world. The liberal approach, the professionalism and scientific working culture provided these multi-national companies the best manager of the world. In the same way, a little effort by the Arab world could save the future of million youth and provide an opportunity to play pivotal role in the development of Arab world and central Asia. In the context of India, the Muslim youth they could be worked as bridge between India and Arab world and central Asia. They could bring the two worlds near to each other. India needs energy, market and capital while the Arab world needs buyer and market. India without solving energy security could not sustain as the big economy of the world for long period of time. The big market with high power purchasing parity community could not sustain long without huge

investment and energy security. At this point Indian youth in general and Muslim youth in particular could play pivotal role. They could work as a Manager, Banker, Industrialist, labor, Doctors, Engineer, Expert etc and advance the national interest in Arab and central Asian worlds. They could compete with others for advancement in Arab and Central Asia. They could help to build strong relationship between India and the rest of Islamic world. The need of hour is that the game of communal terrorism which has been started by the communal minded people of India against Indian Muslim youth should be ended. For solution of this problem of terrorism Indian secular minded people and Arab world and central Asian people should come together. If terrorism could not be allowed to grow anywhere in the world then people should also not be allowed to be victimized. If terrorism is an international problem then violation of Human Rights in the name of terrorism should also an international problem. The case of duality could not sustain longer that the terrorism should be projected by the communalist as international problem and questioning the human rights violation as intervention in the internal matter. And all those people who wish to see better relation between these two communities should come forward. Otherwise the history will repeat itself as it had repeated in the past in the form of colonialism. And as a nationalist and humanist what should be our stand? PART-XXI Gheyas Hashmi, Jeddah (hgheyas@albatool.com.sa) Continued from Mar 2013 In previous issue we have discussed the three mediations of our prophet (S) for his nation who are in Hell Fire for their bad deeds. Hazrat Hassan Basari (R) has described a part of this Hadith saying that the prophet (S) will appear in front of Allah in the same gesture. Allah almighty will say O Muhammad, lift up your head and speak, for you will be listened to, and intercede, for your intercession will be accepted, and ask (for anything) for it will be granted: Then he will ask His permission of mediation for all those who did say La ElahaIllallah. Allah will say by His Glory, Respect, Pride and Greatness, He will certainly take all those who said La ElahaIllallah out of the Hell Fire. When prophets and righteous people have finished their mediations Allah Almighty will say that His generosity and benevolence are remained to come. So, the angels with His permission will take a handful people from Hell fire by recognizing them through the sign of Prostration that the Fire cannot burn. They will be put at the Hyatt River that crosses to the side of the gate of Jannah. They will grow on the both sides of the river like pears. Then, they will be entered to the Jannah. From this narration it is understood that the last group of people will also be Nemazi (performers of prayers) but due to some other sin they will be in Hell Fire. What about those who are ignorant of obligatory prayers? Although the punishment of believers in Hell Fire will be a blessing, as they will not get it similar to non-believer who will not die there nor live, a moment halt in Hell Fire is most disastrous. Allah Almighty says: Lo! It is wretched as abode and as station (Al-Furqan/66). The Hell Fire has been made for Non-Muslim. It is not for Muslim at all. If they go there it is very unfortunate. Allah Almighty says in SuraAalEmran, And ward off (from yourselves) the Fire prepared for disbelievers (131). The criterions for getting Jannah were given in next verse 132 And obey Allah and the messenger, that ye may find mercy. It is further said in next verse 133: And vie one with another for forgiveness from your Lord, and for a paradise as wide as are the heavens and the earth, prepared for those who ward off (evil). Some believers will have bad and good deeds in equal quantity, i.e. 50% each. So, they will be at the borders of Hell and Paradise. They will be in conversation with people of Paradise and Hell. They will say Salam to the People of Paradise and Shame to the People of Hell. They will be later entered to the Paradise with the blessing of Allah Almighty. Evil is evil. We should always try to have good deeds. Quran says: Say, The bad and the good are not equal, though the abundance of the bad may please you; so be careful of (your duty to) Allah, O men of understanding, that you may be successful. Paradise will be permanent abode for Muslims and Hell will be everlasting dwelling for non-Muslim. Life style will be completely different from this world. Lives at both places will be beyond imagination whether it is in terms of Nma (blessing) as Paradise or Azab (chastisement) as Fire. In next issues we will discuss in brief about Paradise, which was made for Muttaqeen (Allah-fearing) only. To be continued.

Dr. Mohammed Haseebulah 1. Vocational Training run by central and state Board of intermediate education (BIE) for X and XII student is becoming a very important mode of education. Vocational training courses in Primary Teachers Training, various trades, Computer, Embroidery etc. The government has set aside more than 20% of jobs for those who complete this vocational training. 2. Law: A five year integrated course in Law has been introduced after the XII (PUC) this needs to be high lighted. Our community needs good lawyers. 3. Hotel and hospitality management This is by far the most developing job sector there are diploma and degree courses available in Karnataka. 4. BPO/Call Center/ Medical Transcription: These are excellent (though not a long term career option) for youngsters in our community = short term training after PUC with good communication skills can fetch around Rs. 15,000 to 20,000 per month income. Youngsters can also pursue their degree program (earn and learn). 5. Mass Media communication: This is the fastest growing sector and the need of time. There is BA (Hons) in Masscom available at Loyola College and other colleges in Karnataka. Bachelor in Journalism, Diploma and Degree courses in Media production is very much in demand. 6. Biotechnology: This field too is now a very job oriented and demanding field. Degree courses are available. Another field to look into is Food Technology Courses are available in this field after Plus 2 (PUC). 7. Our community lacks good teachers/lecturers = Teaching is deemed to be a last resort profession I suggest in your seminars and flow chart = along with B.Ed., D.Ed., you also need to highlight M.Phil. = the basic requirement for PGT (Post graduate Teachers) to teach in Junior college and senior college specifies M.Phil. These are available in regular as well as correspo ndence mode. As per UGC pay scale a junior college lecturer starts with an e n t r y l e v e l basic salary of Rs. 8000 with other allowances it goes up to 15000 plus on entry level. 8. IT: Needless to say your flow chart does lay emphasis more important than an engineering degree in IT or a BCA is the completion of the above referred courses. 9. Aviation industry is another field which is throwing up a lot of job opportunities apart from BE in aeronautics we are looking at several other support staff ticketing, airport handling, ATC (air traffic controllers), on board staff etc. There are now several private institutions which are offering a range of courses after PUC and graduation in these fields. 10. POLITICS: Do suggest that youngsters seriously consider Politics as a career option the best route is to do BA in Public Administration and follow it up with a law degree to consider entering in the political arena unfortunately most of the politicians today are there by chance not by choice let our youngsters plan a career in politics. 11. Public Service commission: Possible the second chart (which I could not open) may have this option included if not please do include the option of doing UPSC or KSPSC (Karnataka State Public Service Commission), Subordinate

services etc in your flow chart = these can be opted for after graduation in any discipline. On the UPSC (central level), other than IAS, IFS and IPS there are several options in Revenue, Forest, irrigation etc services. At state level direct entry as Dy. Collector, Asst Commissioner of Police, Dy Registrar Coo p e r a t i v e s , Te h s i l d a r, B l o c k Development officer etc are available. 12. Armed Forces: After Xth, PUC and Degree there are several entry levels in the armed forces Navy, army and the air force the pay and position are excellent and our community needs to enter these services. Also state level exams are conducted for entry into various levels of police force. This needs to be highlighted. a. Job oriented courses. b. Courses and careers which we hardly pay attention and which our community needs in the present day and time.

An inspiring true story that shows just how simple it can be for one person with an idea to make a difference. <image001.jpg> Aabid Surti is an odd character. A few years ago, the angular, bearded author was invited to meet the President of India to receive a national award for literature at a ceremony in the capital, New Delhi. He politely declined. Absorbed in writing the first draft of his new novel, he cited the reason that he did not have time. But what he has made time for every Sunday for seven years now, is going door-to-door inMira Road, a non-descript suburb of Mumbai, with a plumber in tow, asking residents if they need their tap fixed for free! As a distinguished Indian painter and author, Aabid has written around 80 books but no story so moved him as the truth about water scarcity on the planet. I read an interview of the former UN chief Boutros Boutros Ghali, he recalls, who said that by 2025 more than 40 countries are expected to experience water crisis. I remembered my childhood in a ghetto fighting for each bucket of water. I knew that shortage of water is the end of civilized life. Around the same time, in 2007, he was sitting in a friends house and noticed a leaky tap. It bothered him. When he pointed it out, his friend, like others, dismissed it casually: it was too expensive and inconvenient to call a plumber for such a minor job even plumbers resisted coming to only replace old gaskets. A few days later, he came across a statistic in the newspaper: a tap that drips once every second wastes a thousand litres of water in a month. That triggered an idea. He would take a plumber from door to door and fix taps for free one apartment complex every weekend. As a creative artist, he had earned more goodwill than money and the first challenge was funding. But, he says, if you have a noble thought, nature takes care of it. Within a few days, he got a message that he was unexpectedly being awarded Rs.1,00,000 ($2,000) by the fan of Aabids work as a comic book creator. After reading the newspaper report titled City of Angels, he wrote to Aabid: It sounds like one of the little big things my dad would have done.Strange that I have enjoyed [your comic] Bahadur in my childhood and enjoyed reading your tap story so many years down the line when I am father myself. God bless you and yes, I believe in angels after reading the newspaper. In 2010, Aabid Surti was nominated for the CNN-IBN CJ Be The Change Award. In the same year, a television crew from Berlin flew down to follow him on his Sunday rounds which continued come monsoon or shine. Its hard to say how much water he has saved with his mission, given that the faucets he fixed could have continued leaking for months, and maybe years, had he not rung the doorbell one Sunday morning. But conservatively, it could be estimated that he has single-handedly saved at least 5.5m litres of water till date. In the summer of 2013, the state where Aabid lives is expecting its worst drought in 40 years. Months in advance, the Chief Minister Prithviraj Chauhan has warned citizens to begin conserving water. While ministers lobby for drought-relief packages worth millions of dollars, Aabid sees his own approach as simple and inexpensive. As he rings another door-bell on yet another Sunday in Mira Road, seven years into his one-man mission, he says: A n y o n e c a n l a u n c h a w a t e r conservation project in his or her area. Thats the beauty of this concept. It doesnt require much funding or even an office. And most importantly, it puts the power back in our own hands. I would call him a modern-day angel.....

Hindi Sahitya Sansthan (UP) for his contribution to Hindi literature. And one Sunday morning in 2007, the International Year of Water, he set out with a plumber to fix the problem for his neighbors. He began by simply replacing old O-ring rubber gaskets with new ones, buying new fixtures from the wholesale market. He named his one-man NGO Drop Dead and created a tagline: save every drop or drop dead. Every Sunday, the Drop Dead team which consisted of Aabid himself, Riyaaz the plumber and a female volunteer Tejal picked the apartment blocks, got permission from the housing societies, and got to work. A day before, Tejal would hand out pamphlets explaining their mission and paste posters in elevators and apartment lobbies spreading awareness on the looming water crisis. And by Sunday afternoon, they would ensure the buildings were drip-dry. By the end of the first year, they had visited 1533 homes and fixed around 400 taps. Slowly, the news began to spread. In March 2008, director Shekhar Kapur, who was working on his own water conservation film, heard about Aabids efforts and wrote on his website: Aabid Surti, thank you so much for who you are. I wish there were more people like you in this world. Keep in touch with us and keep inspiring us. Shekhar. Local newspapers began to write about Drop Dead, which prompted a further flood of grateful emails and spontaneous messages. One of the most heartfelt messages was from superstar actorproducer Shah Rukh Khan, a longtime

By Dr.Mohammad Ghitreef (Shahbaz Nadwi)* There are tens of thousands of small and big Islamic Madrasas in the country, including some big historical and famous seminaries in sub continent, like Darul Uloom Deoband, Mazahir Uloom Saharanpur and Nadwatul Ulama Lucknow and others. Every year tens of thousands of graduates come out from them holding degrees of Alim ,Fazil and of Mufti in their hands. The sad side of the story is that when this madrasa product comes out of madrasa boundaries and steps into the real cruel world it is a bewildered lot, having no clue where to go. Hence apart of a small section, who seek higher studies in pet subjects as Urdu, Arabic and Islamic studies, the majority has no option other than to resort to be Imams in mosques and teachers in the same or other madrasas. More aspirants to a luxurious life go and establish their own madrasas; their fiefdoms, in most cases with crook ways. These madarsas by and large are being run with big community support ,as Muslims traditionally have been spending on Madrasas and mosques with enthusiasm , great heart and huge generosity. For, the zealots see in them the citadels of Islam simply because Mulim leadership, bearded and non-bearded alike ,boast this and brainwash the poor innocent community day in and day out. As a matter of fact madrasas have many merits also for example they should be credited that they provide admirably free education and shelter to poor community children ,especially in rural areas, where secular education system is yet to come and provide the people the basic education. However,in the multicultural society like India, some observe and comment that our Ulema as a human beings generally show good behavior, rather a pious conduct in individual life, yet they are very parochial in their views, mindset and outlook as a community leader. There may be some exceptions and may be cases the other way round, but at least we can safely say that their attitude to look into the world is usually very different from that of a common man, more specifically when it comes to issues such as rights of women in Islam, freedom of expression ,free thought, relations between Muslims and Non Muslims ,Democracy and Secularism among others. It seems that Ulema lack in common sense because they have no understanding of modern world around them, and yet ironically claim and also are supposed to be the religious leaders of Muslim community and sole representatives of Islam. What is reason behind all this pathetic state of affairs? Yes, to my way of thinking, there is a reason, and that is the curriculum of Arabic Islamic madrasa system .This curriculum is centuries old now, which was set by some Iranian scholars in Mughal period namely Mullah Nizamuddin Sahalwi, and hence this was called Darse Nizami. As a matter of fact we should say that it was very apt and relevant to those times when it was set up. But in todays world, in changed religious-politico-social scenario this curriculum is no more relevant to our times. This curriculum is classified into two categories, say, Uloom Aliya (higher sciences )that are said to be ends in themselves and Uloom Aliyya(arts as a means)which are not meant in themselves. The first category is meant originally and includes Quran, Hadith, fiqh, Usuluddin,(principles of religion)etc. As this category is concerned, I think there is no need to change it wholly, only we have to change the methodology of teaching this kind of arts and sciences. Because the current methodology of teaching nowadays became so parochial, so biased and so sectarian that it very often, leads to the horrific attitude in some Ulema to attacking others and dubbing each other as kafir and infidel and with other similar derogatory names and abuses, which result in indulging in sectarian quarrel to no end. With these gory conditioning of Ulema, poor Muslim masses are bitterly divided on sectarian lines and are on the receiving end. This horrible situation demands a change of mind which only hopefully could be done by creating a milieu of comparative and academic traits and strong intellectual ethos in the madrasa students. AS teaching the fist kind of arts that is uloom Aliyya, is concerned, The present teaching method is so bizarre ,lengthy , burdensome , boring and yet unfruitful that it is totally unable to develop good language aptitude and linguistic capability in students that on one hand, they are not able to successfully communicate their views to the public and, on the other, most of the curriculum books are old fashioned

,written in the style wrought with Greek logic and ancient philosophical terms, which made it fully ambiguous ,unclear and mind boggling. Of course that trend was once prevalent in Islamic world in the decadent era, and may be good and somehow useful in those circumstances but now in the changed situation it is no longer apt nor relevant. Isnt strange that a student in a seminary generally studies for a whole 12 years or more and he is not capable to correctly read or write a sentence of modern Arabic (with exception to Nadwa graduates to a great extent), not to mention English or Hindi. One most important aspect is that madarsa curriculum is lacking in modern knowledge altogether. It is much needed, therefore, that at least social sciences, such as History, Geography, Economics , political science and comparative study of religions should be taught in Alim or Fazil stages of this curriculum ,because knowledge of the contemporary world is not gained without knowing these sciences, and without that, I am puzzled, how can one leads public and gives them Sharia guidance in a good and understandable manner, so at least introductory knowledge of modern social sciences is a must for every student of Islamic learning. A complete century has passed ,since luminaries of the stature of Shibli Numani and Abul Kalam Azad, voiced their concern in this regard and advocated to bring about the desired changes in madrasa curricula, yet all along Uelema have been vehemently resisting this noble move, seeing in it as a conspiracy against Islam and Muslims. But in spite of that the need of the hour is that this task must be done with Ulema if they give in, and without them too if they resist. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------*Dr.Mohammd Ghitreef is the director of Foundation for Islamic

Kaleem Kawaja, ummid.com Muslim maulanas (clerics) and dargahs (religious shrines) dot the landscape of Muslim India the cities and towns where Indias Muslims live. Having grown up in India, the scenes of multitudes of worshippers thronging the shrines and bearded maulanas lecturing away to the congregations are ingrained in my mind. Countless movies and TV coverage of religious occasions have further reinforced these images over the years. Many people stereotype the extraordinary educational and socioeconomic backwardness of the Muslims of India with the sub-culture of dargahs and maulanas that is pervasive in the lower middleclass Indian Muslim community. On the other end of the spectrum of the Indian society are the images of successful bright Indian youth who compete fiercely for top professional opportunities like IAS/IFS/IPS civil services and the bright eyed engineers f r o m I I Ts ( I n d i a n I n s t i t u t e o f Te c h n o l o g y ) a n d d o c t o r s f r o m prominent medical colleges entering promising careers in the modern fields of engineering and medicine. The two images are poles apart. Yet in recent weeks my attention has been pleasantly drawn to the two images coming together for a few Muslims. No, they did not crack the Powerball lottery. A counted few among the lecturing maulanas and the maudlin dargahs took a big leap forward and bridged the vast gap between the two images to make it possible for a few ordinary Muslim youth to touch the modern Indian moon. Let me share this pleasant observation with you in the following. a. Maulana Mohammad Fazlur Rahim Mujaddidis Crescent Civil Service Academy, New Delhi: About ten years ago Maulana Mujaddidi, a very respected Muslim cleric, established the Crescent Academy in New Delhi as a division of the Maulana Abdur Rahim Educational Trust, with a vision of providing proper Bakhabar guidance, academic coaching and training to the Muslim aspirants for the countrys topmost Civil Services (IAS/IFS/IPS etc). Typically every year l e s s t h a n 1 p e r c e n t s u cc e s s f u l candidates are Muslim. In the just announced results for the very tough multipart competition for these coveted careers for 2013, 13 trainees from the Crescent Academy came through as successful candidates. In fact 30 candidates from the Academy were successful in the first round examinations and 19 cleared the main IAS examination. It should be noted that to-date the Academy with its limited infrastructure and resources, has been able to produce more than 100 IAS, IPS, IFS, IRS, judges and State civil servants throughout the country. These are the very top government services in India and the careers lead to their being the makers of the top policies in the country. b. Maulana Wali Rahmanis Rahmani-30 IIT Entrance Coaching Center, Patna: About five years ago Maulana Rahmani, another very respected Muslim cleric, established this coaching center to provide academic and competitive training to Muslim youth who aspire to enter the Indian Institutes of Technology - Indias most prestigious engineering colleges. Typically every year no more than about 1% Muslim youth are successful in enrolling in the IITs. The results of the competitive examination held for 2013 announced last week show that 24, mostly Muslim, of the 30 candidates from the Rahmani30 Center cracked the IIT-JEE (Joint Entrance Examination). Besides the 24, four students of Rahmani-30 who could not clear the test last year have also got success this year. These 28 candidates have qualified for IIT-JEE Advance test to be held in June. Typically graduates of IITs go on to work in prestigious positions in the countrys top corporations, or multinational corporations or receive employment in foreign countries. c. Khaja Bandanawaz Gaisudaraz Dargahs Engineering College and Institute of Medical Sciences, Gulbarga: Khaja Bandanawaz Gaisudaraz, who passed away in 1422, was a illustrious sufi saint who settled in Gulbarga, Karnatak at the invitation of the then Bahmani Sultan Tajuddin Firoz Shah. He was a disciple of the very illustrious sufi saint Hazrat Nasiruddin Chiragh Dehlvi. His ancient dargah in Gulbarga is a popular center of attraction in south India. In 1966 the Dargahs Trust established the Khaja Education Society to promote education in the educationally backward Muslim community. They started with a school for girls and now operate 15 minority educational institutions in Gulbarga, including the Khaja Bandanawaz College of Engineering established in 1980 and the Khaja Bandanawaz Institute of Medical Sciences established in 2000. The pioneering spirit behind the Khaja Education Society has been the Dargah Tr u s t a n d P a d a m s h r e e S h a h Mohammad Hussaini who passed away recently. Without a doubt this dargah is totally different from the thousands of dargahs spread throughout the country, in that it has put its primary focus on imparting modern high education to the Muslims. Also they have been so eminently successful in transforming youth from the backward Muslim community into high quality engineers and doctors, who are helping uplift the Muslim community and the country into a modern nation. d. Spread the secrets of success One important factor for the handful of brilliant success stories in the Muslim community enumerated above is the close cooperation between the Muslim religious leaders and the Muslim

intelligentsia leaders. Instead of competing with each other or ignoring each other, they pooled the street popularity of the religious folks with the knowledge of modern education of the educated Muslims to make it a win-win situation for the community. These undoubtedly rare success stories in Indias Muslim community make one wonder how much socioeconomic development can take place in the community if many more maulanas and dargahs dedicate themselves to the cause of imparting quality modern education and competitive ability to the Muslim youth and include the well educated Muslims in their team. Instead of spending so much time and energy on political and publicity activities if we spend more of it on the development of our youth, we can change the communitys picture drastically in just one generation.

Helplessness comes a close second. Ask Naazra Khatoon, who watched a 14-year-old daughter and a three-year-old son die allegedly of starvation. Extremely poor, she could do little to save them and now worries for her three surviving children. This family in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, depends completely on the benevolence of neighbours for survival since Naazra's husband, who was the only breadwinner, died 10 months ago. "After my husband's death, it is difficult to sustain. The children of course crave out of hunger. People from the locality willingly donate and try to help us. We don't want to say anything to anyone," says a hapless Naazra Khatoon.

I M P O R T A N T G I F T F R O M A L L A H
M.A. HAQUE It is prophesied that if by any chance the Third World War will be fought, it may be for some small puddle of water. This prophecy looks extremely contradictory that there will be large scale fighting for some small source of water. We know that 70% earths surface is covered by water. That is why when earth is seen from space or its satellite images are seen the earth looks mostly blue and a common term for the earth is the Blue Planet. Obviously the earth has huge quantity of water, although it is not unlimited. Scientists say that quantity of water present on the earth is almost fixed. That is why it is commonly remarked by the scientists that the water we consume today may be the same which has been there since the time the dinosaurs lived on the earth, i.e. for hundreds of millions of years. Water on the earth has been changing its form. But it has always been there in one form or another. The tragedy is that out of the total water about 97.5% is salt water. Only about 2.5% is Fresh Water i.e. which is not saline and which can be directly consumed by us and most of the organisms present on the earth. The fresh water is not pure water. In fact if we drink pure water, we may not remain healthy. We will suffer from deficiency of certain elements which we receive with the water that we drink. That is why good quality drinking water is commonly labeled as Mineral Water. Another important issue is that all of the fresh water that is present on the earth is not available for use. Only a small fraction of it is available to us. Finally, it works out to the level that only 0.007 percent of the total water on the earth is available to meet all the requirements of more than 7.1 billion people living on the earth and also of the other types of living organisms living outside the oceans. Apart from direct consumption, water is required for producing food, for dilution and treatment of wastes, and to keep the environment in healthy condition. Even industrial activities need water for their operations. At times it is needed as ingredient, at times as solvent, at times as carrier of materials and quite often as a coolant. The issue is that we have trained ourselves to consider water as a renewable resource. That is why in recent time we are extracting more water than what the water bodies receive. Result is that the water bodies are shrinking and many of them dry up immediately after the rains or snowfall is over. Also, there is large scale misuse and wastage of water. For example, for producing just one average sized hamburger about 2,400 liters of water is consumed. Similarly, water intensive crops like rice, cotton, sugarcane etc. are being cultivated in areas which are not having adequate water. Net result is that during the last century water use grew at more than double the rate of population growth. During the last 50 years the water withdrawals have grown three times on global scale. Nations which are politically or financially strong extract much more water than the others. Consequence is that almost 1/3rd of the total number people on the earth cannot get sufficient water to meet even their drinking requirements. By the middle of the current century about 2/3rd of the world population will face scarcity of water. United Nations has confirmed that by 2025, Bakhabar about 1.8 billion people will live in areas beset with water scarcity. Most of them will be in poor and underdeveloped nations. Another dimension is that water availability and its quality and health status are closely related. That is why people living in poor regions have large numbers of health related problems. India is one of the worst suffer ers in terms o f fresh water availa bility a n d its low quality. Reason is that the lack of adequate water availability is an important factor in many areas of the country. Another issue is that most of the fresh water sources in the country are contaminated due to sewage and effluents. Result is that infectious diseases continue to be serious threat for the population, especially in case of children. Large number of people, mostly children, die every year on account of water related infections. It is estimated that 21% of communicable diseases in the country are related to water quality and available quantity. As per UNICEF every year diarrhea and other diseases caused by contaminated water kill some 600,000 children. Now let me come to the point why I am emphasizing on water so much. Reason is that we are not careful about the use and consumption of water. Secondly we do not protect water sources against contamination. As Muslims we need to understand the value and importance of water. If we go by the Quran, we find that Allah says: We made from water every living thing. Will they not believe? (Quran 21:30) It is clear that water is the main ingredient from which all the living organisms have been created by Allah. Now science has also made it clear. Many organisms are 95 to 99% water. Again Allah says: And Allah has created every animal from water. Of them there are some that creep on their bellies; some that walk on two legs; and some that walk on four. (Quran 24:45)

14

Also, about ourselves Allah has made it clear that we are created from water: It is He who has created man from water. Then has He established relationships of lineage and marriage. (Quran 25:54) Also, Allah made it clear in Quran that the salt water is not palatable. That is very important. If we could use the sea water as such, there was no issue of water scarcity. Even contamination could not be such a problem as most microorganisms cannot survive in saline water: It is He who has let free the two bodies of flowing water. One palatable and sweet and the other salt and bitter. Yet has He made a barrier between them. A partition that is not to be passed. (Quran 25:53) Then Allah created aquatic organisms and we consume many of them as food and also for other purposes. In fact seafood provides sustenance to large numbers of people in different countries. Also, nutritionally, the seafood is superior to many others:

See ye the water which ye drink? Do ye bring it down in rain from the cloud or do We? Were it Our Will, We could make it saltish and unpalatable. Then why do ye not give thanks? (Quran 56:68-70) Allah has made clear the value and contribution of the rain or fresh water. Due to the rains the barren areas become productive and produce different kinds of vegetation on which we depend directly or indirectly: And further, thou seest the earth barren and lifeless. But when we pour down rain on it, it is stirred to life, it swells, and it puts forth every kind of beautiful growth in pairs. (Quran 22: 5) We can easily understand that fresh water is extremely valuable resource on this earth. We need to appreciate the real value of good quality fresh water. But we are hardly concerned. If water is available, we waste it at every step: be it in agriculture, be it for washing, be it for bathing or in industry. Also, if we look at different Ahadeeth we can find innumerable examples where the value and conservation of water have been emphasized. I am not going to refer to all of them. Just one instance: Prophet (SAW) consumed only one Mudd (less than half litre) water for wadhu. May be we cannot do so. But that does not mean that we should waste litres of water for wadhu. Same is the case for bathing. One bucket (about 10 to 15l) should suffice for purifying ourselves. But how much we consume? We need to introspect. At times we consume even hundred litres for bath. We, as Muslims must be concerned about these wastages. Also, Allah has time and again warned in Quran against wastages of all kinds. But we do not heed. On the contrary we should be examples for others to emulate. Also, whenever possible, we should tell others why we are so concerned about wastages. That will be an important lesson for others. *************

M.A. Haque If I remember correctly two months back I wrote a piece in Bakhabar on wastage of food and the duty of Muslims in this regard. On 5th June every year the United Nations celebrates the World Environment Day. For each year a theme is selected to raise awareness world over on some important issue related to environment. You will be pleased to know that this year's theme is on Food Wastage. The exact theme is "Think.Eat.Save." Think.Eat.Save is an anti-food waste and food loss campaign that encourages all to reduce our "foodprint". According to the FAO, every year 1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted. This is equivalent to the same amount produced in the whole of subSaharan Africa. At the same time, 1 in every 7 people in the world go to bed hungry and more than 20,000 children under the age of 5 die daily from hunger and malnutrition. Given this enormous imbalance, this years theme Think.Eat.Save encourages us to become more aware of the environmental impact of the food choices we make and empowers us to make informed decisions. Muslims have to be doubly cautious in this regard as Allah and the Prophet (SAW) have again and again warned about wastage of all kinds of resources and food is certainly very important in this regard. We need to understand the pain of those who are unable to get adequate food and nutrition. The food saved can feed those who are deprived of that.

Nor are the two seas alike. The one palatable, sweet, and pleasant to drink and the other, salt and bitter. Yet from each kind of water do ye eat flesh fresh and tender. (Quran 35:12) We know that rain or snowfall is the main source of fresh water. Allah is kind enough to bring rains which contain fresh water and not saline water. He says if the rain water was saline, could we survive?

Once upon a time, there lived a King who, despite his luxurious lifestyle, was neither happy nor content. One day, the King came upon a servant who was singing happily while he worked. This fascinated the King; why was he, the Supreme Ruler of the Land, unhappy and gloomy, while a lowly servant had so much joy. The King asked the servant, 'Why are you so happy?' The man replied, 'Your Majesty,My family and I don't need too much - just a roof over our heads and warm food to fill our tummies.' The king was not satisfied with that reply. Later in the day, he sought the advice of his most trusted advisor. After hearing the King's woes and the servant's story, the advisor said, 'Your Majesty, I believe that the servant Has not been made part of The 99 Club.' 'The 99 Club? And what exactly is that?' the King inquired. The advisor replied, 'Your Majesty, to truly know what The 99 Club is, place 99 Gold coins in a bag and leave it at this servant's doorstep.' When the servant saw the bag, he took it into his house. When he opened the bag, he let out a great shout of joy... So many gold coins! He began to count them. After several counts, he was at last convinced that there were 99 coins. He wondered, 'What could've happened to that last gold coin? Surely, no one would leave 99 coins, It must be 100 coins definitely !' Bakhabar So, He looked everywhere he could, but that final coin was elusive. Finally, exhausted he decided that he was going to have to work harder than ever to earn that gold coin and complete his collection. From that day, the servant's life was changed. He was overworked, horribly grumpy, and castigated his family for not helping him make that 100th gold coin. He stopped singing while he worked. W i t n es s i n g t h i s d r a s t i c transformation, the King was puzzled. When he sought his advisor's help, the advisor said, 'Your Majesty, the servant has now officially joined The 99 Club.' He continued, 'The 99 Club is a name given to those people who have enough to be happy but are never contented, because they're always yearning and Striving for that extra 1, saying to themselves: 'Let me get that one final thing and then I will be happy for life.' We can be happy, even with very little in our lives, but the minute we're given something bigger and better, we want even more! We lose our sleep, our happiness, we hurt the people around us; all these as a price for our growing needs and desires.

Dashrath Manjhi, A man of inspiration

Dashrath Manjhi 1934[1] - August 17, 2007[2]) was born into a poor labourer family in Gahlour village near Gaya inBihar, India.[1] He is also known as Mountain Man.[3][4] Dashrath Manjhi's wife, Falguni Devi, died due to lack of medical treatment because the nearest town with a doctor was 70 kilometres (43 mi) away from their village in Bihar, India. Dashrath did not want anyone else to suffer the same fate as his wife, so he carved a 360-foot-long (110 m) through-cut, 25-foot-deep (7.6 m) in places and 30foot-wide (9.1 m) to form a road[5] through a mountain in the Gehlour hills, working day and night for 22 years from 1960 to 1982. His feat reduced the distance between the Atri and Wazirganj blocks of the Gaya district from 55 km to 15 km, bringing him national acclaim.[2][6][7].He died on August 17, 2007.[8] He was given a state funeral by the Government of Bihar.[8][9] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dashrath_Manjhi

A Take on Boston Marathon Blasts
First of all as I belong to a religion which raises eyebrows and prison doors each time a bomb goes bang anywhere in the world, let me condemn the latest in the series, Boston Marathon Pressure Cooker blasts. So never mind how many of my fellow citizens of the world have condemned the violence in Gujarat or Iraq or Afghanistan. Why does the world find it hard to accept the fact that like everyone else we the Muslims too are severely opposed to any kind of violence against the innocents? We are also; for a fair trial against an accused as he/she is to be taken innocent until proven guilty. But as we all now well realize, there seems to be a pattern to this madness. The moment some insane person commits a blast, all fingers are pointed in one direction, Muslim and Islam. And this Muslim doesnt know where to hide his face and goes on a condemning spree, lest he is done in too. This is a fierce Psychological war that is going on post 9/11, with the Muslim minds. It was reflected in the universal Muslim prayer, after the Boston tragedy Oh, God, let it not be a Muslim, this time! While the world was waiting for the details of the blast, we were fervently praying that may the culprit/s not be one among us. Bad luck, this time too. Slayers of innocents , be they of any hue, are slayers of humanity, our Book asserts. Neither we are terrorists nor do we want to atone for someone elses crimes. Send him to hell if he is guilty, we dont care. The terrorist is simply just that, a terrorist. Never mind bombing Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan brings you Noble Peace Prizes and Presidential libraries. This whole psycho-warfare is repeated once more now. It begins with how the Muslim youth is becoming radicalized, how his religion makes him an extremist and leads to the racial profiling of the worst kind. This never happens when an Anders Breivik [Germany]or an Adam Lanza [ Sandy Hook] commits mass murders as heinous as done by the Tsarnaevs. TV shows abound with details of how the elder bomber went to the mosque each day,[ the younger Dhzarkov Tsarnaev never did] how he asked his women, his mother and his American wife Katherine Russell[ who converted to Islam] , to cover themselves as per the Quranic edicts and his religious training during the Dagestan trip. As the telecast of the tragedy began on Television, the journos and anchors were competing with each other to blame the eternal suspects. With each piece of freshly arriving info in the media, we held our breaths and said a prayer for peace. A well known Muslim journo finished off that fateful day tweeting, Today the world goes to sleep at peace in Boston but we do not know what the morning will bring about or what the future holds for us. How Israel Deals With Terrorist Acts: There are admiring reviews for the so called impeccable handling of the entire Boston affair and how the police culled out the real terrorists from millions of thousands of photos taken at the spot. Reportedly the handicapped man at the wheelchair had given exact description of Tsarnaev brothers who had put those backpacks at his feet that day. But a few Doubting Thomases have expressed their reservations about holding the entire Boston city to ransom for more than 24 hours ,to the extent of asking each Bostonian to be indoors with the instructions to not answer any door call! Ya a k o v K a t z , a m i l i t a r y a f f a i r s correspondent for Jerusalem Post with a rich experience of covering many terrorist attacks is surprised at the US , over reaction , the shutdown of the entire Boston . He says he understands the rule of better safe than sorry, still asking people to shelter and holding five million people to ransom for a 19 year old boy! Oh boy, he calls it allowing terrorism to win ! It was unprecedented and exactly what the terrorist wanted, to terrorize and frighten the people, he informs us. In Israel, he had seen, people sipping coffee and waiting for buses from the same line that had just exploded. He also questions why since Monday when the blasts took place until Friday, with two terrorists on the loose there was no thought of a lockdown and with one terrorist dead and another on the lone run, you suddenly shut the shop? That American town paralyzed itself completely, he concludes. America proved Noam Chomsky right , again who has said that, America is a frightened country. This professor of Linguistics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology says that, this is very ironic, because the level of security America has is such that no one else could dream of. The theme is were about to be destroyed by an enemy.[today]it is Muslimsand [the ]paranoia is very real, he does not forget to add. This paranoia keeps reflecting here and there; an episode Family Guy from the famous cartoon series Simpsons is said to have predicted the Boston Marathon Blasts. The very next day the clip of that particular episode was pulled out by Fox Television from its website. There have been well documented cases of the Federal Bureau of Investigation ensnaring the young unsuspecting Muslim youth into the terrorism trap when it were the covert security officials who led and encouraged them to join the terror outfits. Very recently a young Muslim man Abdella Ahmad Tounisi 18 , was arrested in Chicago when he, under an allegedly FBI trap tried to recruit himself as a candidate for an Al Qaeda group fighting the Syrian government, through an online web portal. To quote words from the report on Aljazeera, The critics have said the use of such sites raises questions about whether authorities are overreaching, wooing impressionable youth to contemplate crimes that otherwise wouldnt cross their minds. Need it be said that all this was unethical on FBIs part; the real terrorist doesnt have to go online for contacts, the real terrorist has real contacts. But come a terror strike and the Muslim minds get scared, burqas and beards begin to tremble. Muslim ki dadhi mein permanent tinkaa! No need to scratch your absent beards; if you are not a Muslim, you need not worry at all. You and your faith is safe and pure as the snow. The Powerful Role of Social /Mainstream Media: Talking about the role of the social media and how powerful it has become can be gauged from the fact that within a minute of the blast an eye witness Dan Rampareillo [@Boston_to_a_T] uploads a picture on twitter and eight long minutes later it was re-tweeted by Reuters social media editor Anthony De Roas[@AntDeRosa] tweeting, Photo captures explosion. A few moments later another tweet arrived, The whole world is witness to those peaceful blasts by the religion of peace.

Prejudice at its extreme. This prejudice this discrimination is the New Apartheid of the New World Order. It is a crime to call a black, a black or nigger but you can say anything about the Muslim. Subtle and blatant maligning of Islam remains unabated on the media. Peter T King of New York, the Republican chairman of the House Subcommittee on Counterterrorism and Intelligence, called for an increased surveillance of Islamic communities in the US; more police, more surveillance as the threat is from within. There are numerous such examples of Muslimpartheid and hate crimes. Sadly the Muslim World as a whole doesnt speak against this atrocity. You wont find M 8 to take care of our concerns. Fighting against Muslimpartheid is a lonely battle. Contrast this with the banning for life of the Greek footballer Giorgis Katidis for doing a Nazi /Hitler style salute to celebrate his winning goal. Stoking fears about minority communities especially the Muslims is good for sales, the media men know this well. The nonstop filthy campaign against Islam on social and mainstream media is akin to putting the Muslims everywhere in those very Pressure Cookers as were said to be used by Tsarnaevs. The radicalization of the Muslim youth is the hot topic. It is quite revealing a story about the eldest brother Tamerlane Tsarnaev, 23 who had won two consecutive titles as the Golden Gloves heavy weight boxing champion of New England in 2010 but was barred from the national tournament championship as he was not a US citizen. The rules had changed only that year, shattering all his dreams of representing America and from then onwards he took to the dark road of fanaticism. Until then he was said to be a normal guy who loved partying, playing piano and violin and had an email id like , The_professor@real-hiphop.com How Do Muslims Deal With Fanaticism: That fanaticism is censured by the Muslims is evident from the fact that Tamerlan Tsarnaev , was driven out of a Boston mosque by his own people for foolishly objecting to the Imams call for emulating Martin Luther King Junior. This alone shows that Boston Muslims were alert to the extremist tendencies in the community. One must admire Imam Suhaib Webb , the Boston revert cleric for his exemplary role after the tragedy. I too am witness to an event where the local cleric denounced the working women to hell and for driving bikes; the speaker was rightly taken to task, by those present. I am witness to another out of the ordinary instance of fanaticism when in a program, an Islamic televangelist reprimanded the children for, hold your breaths, Clapping! Clapping is haram he said ; not practiced by the Salaf and now the kids had a real hard time. As they were used to putting their little hands together to commit the haram act of applauding the moment a child received a prize. It led to a funny situation where the bewildered kids clapped and giggled together. Last month in a Gulf city, in a religious congregation, some of the audience staged a dramatic walk out when a famous Islamic speaker talked about Imam Ghazali, the eminent Islamic philosopher. This I believe is an extreme reaction to a simple problem. Thats why these days I say a little prayer before clicking on anything related to films on my Face book wall as recently I was attacked by my, FB sisters for clicking, like on an interview of film actor Farooque Shaikh. I was into a major sin, they said. From asking you to never wish your Non Muslim friends a Happy Deepawali or a Merry Christmas to condemning Ghalib for being an un-Islamic poet, the list may be long. This is our own internal Pressure Cooker and mind it, we are keeping a tab on it, trying our best. But is the Media Pressure Cooker ever going to give us, a happy whistle of relief? Till then, I am watching Simpsons.

Will the biases about terrorists remain permanent?

By Ram Puniyani*
We have witnessed number of acts of terror in India, during last two decades. While those involved in the acts of terror have been coming from individuals of different religions, the net outcome of the actions of investigation agencies and police has been to arrest Muslim youth, to put charges against them and in most cases to release them after the charges are not proved on any ground. This pattern had a mini-break for sometime after the Malegaon blast of 2008. The professional, unbiased and meticulous investigation of the Malegaon blast by the then chief of Maharashtra ATS, Hemant Karkare came as a big step in getting to the terrorists. Due to this; starting from Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur, S w a m i D a y a n a n d P a n d e y, S w a m i Aseemanand and many others belonging to the ideology of Hindutva nationalism are currently cooling their heels in the jails. Investigations into Malegaon and many other blasts are showing the imprint of these Hindutva groups and people. One thought that this major breakthrough into acts of investigation will change the mind set of police authorities and they will overcome their biases and do a more professional job in investigation into the acts of terror. Alas that was not to be and guided by Pavlovian reflex, in a knee jerk fashion, police continues to repeat its pattern of giving statements immediately after the acts of terror in which the organizations like Indian Mujahedeen. Lashkar and others continue to be being named without a thorough probe. This is followed by the usual arrests and framing them. Recently first in the case of Hyderabad twin blasts on 21 February 2013 in which 17 people died and over hindered were injured. These bombs were kept on a bicycle and Indian Mujahideen were blamed for this dastardly act. Later in Bangalore on 17th April a bomb exploded 300 meters from the BJP office. For this blast a motorcycle was used. In this blast around 16 people were injured. It was propagated that the blast took place near BJP office! As usual Indian Mujahedeen were blamed. In this blast again there was an additional factor about propaganda that blast took place near BJP office, when in reality the blast was 300 meters away from the spot. Congress spokesperson Shakil Ahmad said that this blast and the propaganda of its being near BJP office will benefit BJP in the forthcoming elections, while another Congress spokesperson and BJP countered the statement of Shakil Ahmad. In Bangalore blast, the preceding incidents are very disturbing and revealing. Just ten days before the Bangalore blast, on sixth April in Kannur (Kerala) a blast took place from the motorcycle and RSS swayamsevak A. V. Dileep Kumar who was carrying four kilograms of explosives died. One recalls that the RSS associates also got killed in blasts in Nanded, Kanpur and many other places. This Kannur incident was underplayed and not much is known about the investigation so far as such. It is interesting that police authorities who immediately named Indian Mujahidin have been totally silent on the Hindutva connection of probable terrorists, as by now the nation knows the involvement of Hindutva groups in many acts of terror. The real loser of these biases held by authorities and common people is the country as a whole. The real reason being that if we dont nab the real culprits and remain trapped in the usual prejudices and biases, the real culprits will continue to carry on their nefarious work over and over again. As such apart from other things on this trend of Muslim youth being arrested a good amount of documentation and peoples investigation has been done by various human rights groups. ANHAD held a peoples tribunal and published it report, Scapegoats and Holy Cows. Lately a significant report by Jamia Teachers Solidarity Association led by Manisha Sethi has published 'Framed, Damned, and Acquitted. This report in a analytic way tells us the stereotypical manner of police investigation and actions and the plight of those who were arrested particularly by the Delhi Police Special Cell on charges of these youth being part of terrorist outfits. In most of these cases they were acquitted by courts. This report as such should have created awareness about the police methods and a pressure on police to mend its ways. The report also points that the biased atmosphere has been created as media is publishing the police version uncritically. This is in contrast to the journalistic ethics where the official versions have to be checked, cross checked and examined critically before publishing them. The human rights groups also have been struggling for getting compensation to these victims in good measure but to no avail so far. And then the question comes up as to what about the police officers who are guilty of these acts of wrongful investigation and implicating innocent youth, ruining their life in a serious way? Should they not be punished? The pattern of police reporting is also very stereotypical and needs to be seriously criticized. The question is what the senior leadership is doing in the face of findings of these reports. Is it not important for the policy makers to take cognizance of such important reports and respond to them in the form of policy change for the investigation authorities? Amongst others another human rights group, Rihai Manch from Uttar Pradesh is also campaigning on this issue and trying to get the innocent youth released. UP Government had appointed a Nimesh Commission to investigate these cases, but for reasons known to itself the government is not releasing the report and is doing some patch work here and there. While UP Government is dodging over the issue of implicating the Muslim youth, one of its ministers is having the taste of these biases in United States, where he was detained at Boston. While he is blaming Indian External Affairs Minister for this, he is forgetting that these biases against Muslims are equally widespread and before him, people of the stature of ex President Abdul Kalam and the celebrity like Shah Rukh Khan have faced similar situations. Is it not an indication enough for the UP minister to set his own house in order as for as the implication of Muslim youth in acts of terror are concerned. The real worrying point of all these incidents is the way biases against Muslims are becoming rooted more and more. What efforts are needed to counter this stereotypical nature of understanding security agencies and perceptions at popular level needs a serious course correction on urgent basis. ------------------* Ram Puniyani (born 25 Aug 1945) was a professor in biomedical engineering at the IIT Bombay. A Fabulous Narration about Taqwa... Toubah and Pardon

.. From Beyond Education collection Nissar Nadiadwalas Editorial forYoung Muslims I have heard this narration from Shaikh Zafrul Hasan Madni who quoted from Sahih Abu Dawood. My Madni scholar and close friend Shaikh Abdul Basit confirmed the Hadith to be Sahih Hadith no. is 4379 from Sahih Abu Dawood. It was a dark morning in Madinah. A woman was returning after offering fajr salah. Suddenly a man sprang upon her and raped her. The woman screamed for help. A man heard her cry and ran to help her. But the rapist fled. The man who came for her help chased the rapist to catch him. Meanwhile a group of Muslims, upon hearing the cry of the woman, too reached there. They heard from her about the incident and they too ran in the search of the rapist. But an unusual thing happened. Instead of catching the rapist they caught the man who was looking for the rapist. The man plead that he was too like them trying to locate the hidden rapist. So they brought him to the woman for verification. The poor woman had not seen her rapist but out of shock she exclaimed, "Yes this is the man!" It was dark when the incident took place but the woman testified that this was the man. The man pleaded that he was not but the people insisted that criminals always refuse to accept their crime. The matter was presented before the Messenger of Allah. He asked the man if he had committed the crime, he pleaded innocence again. The woman was firm that the same man was the rapist. The man had only one hope, Allah. There was no revelation from Allah to announce his innocence. The Prophet (pbuh) ordered death penalty for the rapist, stoning to death. The man was taken to the place of rajm. All preparations were made for the death penalty. A pit was dug and stones were collected. The crowd waited for the order to stone. And suddenly a man tearing the crowd came forward shouting, "Leave him! Leave him!" He ran towards the man and stopped the death penalty. "I am the guilty. Leave this man and punish me in his place," he insisted. The people were shocked. They inquired from the person if he was really speaking the truth and knew the consequences of his statement. He said "I fear Allah." The matter was again taken to the Prophet (pbuh). He heard the man who pleaded guilty. The man said, "I committed the crime and got away with it. The woman could not recognise me. The people could not catch me. Even the Prophet (pbuh) did not know that I was the g u i l t y. B u t Allah knew it. I wondered why Allah not uncovered my crime. Then I c a u s e d another crime, letting another man to be punished to death for my crime. My heart pinched me and I said to myself, "I can escape from the punishment in this world but will I be able to deceive Allah or hide my crime from Him? My Taqwa grew stronger and I surrendered myself to the jury. Please leave that man because he is innocent and punish me instead for my crime" The Prophet (pbuh) ordered the innocent man to be freed and then he ordered that this man should also be freed and not punished! The people were shocked as my readers too may be feeling the shock. The Prophet (pbuh) said, "This man has repented in such a manner that Allah has forgiven him." His Taqwa did not allow an innocent man to be punished for his crime and so he surrendered in spite of knowing that death awaited him. Moral of the Narration? The man who was innocent put his trust in Allah and Allah assures: Allah will find out ways for him who fears Allah. Surah Talaq chapter 65 verse 3. The man who was guilty repented so severely and surrendered out of fear of Allah, ready to die in this world so that he may escape the punishment of Allah on the day of Qiyamah. Allah accepted his apology and as He declares in Surah Baqarah, verse 284: Allah forgives whomever He wills and Punishes

whomever He wills... But did my readers consider this? The name of the man who committed the crime, the woman who suffered and the innocent who was arrested by mistake, are not narrated in any book by any narrator. They remain unnamed. Though many people were present during the preparation of rajm and when the real guilty surrendered, no one narrated their names. The honour of a Muslim is very precious. If only today, even after 1400 years, we can revive that honour...

Living a simple life O n b e i n g a

Over the last decade or so life has consistently been enriched because of more and more facilities, ongoing gadgets inventions and day by day increment in luxuries. This is quite exciting however during the same period of time, people have increased their love for materialistic things abruptly which has directly or indirectly reduced their overall happiness index. Now a days, we have more luxuries but less delights and high stress levels. We have more sugar, blood and heart patients then it used to be a decade back. The reason for all the stress and anxiety is simple that we are not living a simple life. Below are some tips which can simplify your life and may amplify the happiness scale of your life. 1- Avoid getting influenced: You don't have to follow every single trend in society. If your friend has purchased a new BMW, you don't need to buy a Mercedes to impress. Live for yourself not for others. If you purchase a high-end luxury car today, your love for this will end soon and you will be selling it at considerable financial loss though I am not forbidding to purchase luxury things once in a considerable duration of time. 2- Avoid impulse buying: You don't need to buy every single gadget instantly which you like in this shop. Do your Needs Vs Wants analysis. Buy only if it is really increasing your peace of mind. Remember that now a days the standard life of every gadget (phone, tablet, laptop, jewelry etc) is more or less 6 months because of new and new products release by several companies. 3- The 6 months Rule: Generally speaking, anything which has not been used in last 6 months will not be used in next 6 months most likely. Give such things (shoes, garments, toys, mobiles, house hold items) in charity. This will help spreading happiness in society and reducing your space at home. 4- Avoid Credit Cards Usage: Avoid this as much as you can. Debt is a Bakhabar silent stress and eating up your mental health slowly. Your brain might get old while you are young at heart. You might develop high BP or sugar because of stress due to credit. Live a credit-free life. 5- Learn to say No: Don't accept every single attractive offer from the bank representative or a car loan company. Do your "Needs Vs Wants" analysis. Careful spending is always recommended. 6Reduce too much social gatherings: Stay at home. Spend quality time with your spouse and kids for empowered relationships. You don't have to say yes every time to your friend who is coming to pick you from home to join another late night social get together. 7- Reduce your love for money: Careful spending and saving is important but don't allow your brain to keep doing the calculations all day long. You love for money is pulling your brain strings and damaging your peace of mind silently. Stay away from too much thoughts about your financials. 8- Less TV more Books: It is proven that people who watch more movies generate high level of stress. Read quality books to learn wisdom and attain high degree of happiness. 9Spend time with Nature: Instead of going to cinemas and malls repeatedly, spend time in parks. This will relax your brain, body and soul. 10- Change your eating habits: why eating lavish foods by visiting costly restaurants again and again in a week. The purpose of food is to fill your belly for some hours. So the suggestion here is to go for simpler and healthier food. Remember, most of the food items in the market are fried which are increasing your cholesterol level silently hence making you a heart patient in the long run! The use of the words couch patato by a Senior Journalist, especially in the context was interesting. I have myself been wondering at the futility of all things. Social communication of which a major part is journalism, is under existential threat. As a non-journalist it is easy for me to deride at any attempt to communicate (havent earned a penny from writing). Yet now and then I come round to disgorging myself in the public square at the risk of facing the derision of the spectators (In the age of spectacle, I am loath to call anyone a reader). The irrelevance of the written word has many aspects. One aspect is that written word needs to be seen now, which is one degree above the need to be heard. The age of television has consumed the age of radio as also the age of print - however sleek the printing. On top of that body language commands excessive superiority over mere language, if you can just think of the hits Sunny Leone can receive on her --- portal. I swear even hundred noble laureates will lose the battle against her simultaneously. In such a stark scenario when I happened to see the TV channel, Russia Today, my faith was redeemed a bit and I felt that the foothold of truth was still possible in the affairs of mankind. When you hear the presentations on Russia Today you do get a feeling that the writer, as the creator of word, is not far behind. It is still possible to switch off bhaand TV to hear a few words of truth. While watching TV, I always felt like a couch potato until after hearing Russia Today, I decided to postpone my move to sell the gold coins I was having. Like a typical couch patato, I did not move to my bank locker to take out my gold coins to rush to sell to the nearest baniya. If a sizable number of couch potatoes did exactly what I did, that is kept sitting, then we have jointly subverted the conspiracy of the western banks to steal our confidence from gold to hawa-hawai. Think of the counter-power of social communication! Coming to think of it, most of the impoverishment schemes in the world have been created by the rush episodes organised by mass communication in which the freedom to choose is availed freely by the lootee (as against the looter). And by the way, why should a looter stop a lootee from hanging himself ? The real question is which side of the fence you are? Looter or lootee? Manzoorul Haque <manhaq@yahoo.com>

Tanwir Phool RELIGION IS ONE AND THE SAME FROM ALWAYS We humans are the most eminent of all creatures of GOD ALMIGHTY. He always wants that we should be obedient to Him. For this purpose He guided us through a series of prophets. The teachings of all the prophets is the same i.e. obedience of GOD ALMIGHTY for success and prosperity of human beings in both the worlds. We should try to follow true teachings of all the prophets for achieving the goals of universal peace, brotherhood, equality, education and charity. SEX & RELIGION By Tanwir Phool The first relationship in this world Created by the GOD ALMIGHTY was that of husband and wife.Adam, the first of mankind was blessed with Eve,his wife, the mother of all human beings.Indeed, the relationship of mother and her child is very important and sacred but it came into existence as a result of the first relationship. It is a fact that creation of pairs in the world is a valuable and merciful Gift of GOD ALMIGHTY.The genders, masculine and feminine, blessed with love and affection are beautiful creation of our Lord. The last Holy Book of GOD ALMIGHTY says in verse No. 36 of chapter 36 (Yaaseen) as under: "Glory to GOD ALMIGHTY (ALLAH) ,Who Created in pairs all things that the earth produces, as well as their own (human) kind and (other) things of which they have no knowledge." Science has now declared that genders are available in plants but this fact was already disclosed about 1500 years before, in the last Holy Book of GOD ALMIGHTY. It is an unassailable fact that the series and succession of life in generations was not possible in the absence of pairs and sex. We, the human beings are the most eminent of all creatures of GOD ALMIGHTY as such He has prescribed principles for our sexual relationship also. We may mention here the story of Prophet Lot/Lut (p.b.u.h.) who was the nephew of Prophet Abraham (p.b.u.h.).He was sent by There is a misunderstanding that the last book of GOD ALMIGHTY (ALLAH) ,Orders the believers to have 4 wives at a time but it is not true.In fact, there was a practice of having so many wives at a time which tendency was curbed and the limit of 4 marriages was imposed.Verse No. 3 of chapter No.4 (Al-Nisa i:e the women) of the last book of GOD ALMIGHTY begins with these instructions: "If you fear that you shall not be able to deal justly with the orphans, marry women of your choice, two,or three,or four; but if you fear that you shall not be able to deal justly (with them), then only one," Some people object on the number of wives of the last Prophet (p.b.u.h.) but he was not the first prophet to have more than one wife.According to Bible and Torah, Prophet Abraham (p.b.u.h.) had 3 wives, Prophet Jacob (p.b.u.h.) had 4 wives, Prophet Moses (p.b.u.h.) had 4 wives, Prophet David(p.b.u.h.) had 9 wives and Prophet Solomon (p.b.u.h.) had 700 wives. Almost all the wives of the last Prophet (p.b.u.h.) except one, were widows and he married each of them for a reason mostly to support widows/orphans.His first wife was also a widow and during her life time, the Prophet (p.b.u.h.) did not marry again for a period of 25 years. His wife Umme Salamah was a widow with 4 orphans, 2 boys and 2 girls. He loved the orphan children more than their real father. His wife Zainab bint Gahsh who was the Prophet's cousin, got married with him after being divorced by her first husband Zayd. the GOD ALMIGHTY to the city of Sodom (Sadum) situated on the Western shore of the Dead Sea.The city in question was immensely filled with evils. The most common evil among the people was that men had sex with men instead of with women.According to Instructions of GOD ALMIGHTY,Prophet Lot (p.b.u.h.) warned them to give up this filthy act but they refused to obey him and threatened to drive him out of the city. Consequently,as a result of Wrath of GOD ALMIGHTY a terrific storm of stones rained on the city and everyone was destroyed completely while Prophet Lot (p.b.u.h.) and his followers were saved as they already migrated from the city according to Instruction of GOD ALMIGHTY. It is observed from the above details that the Prophet (p.b.u.h.) married the widows/divorced to protect them.Only one wife of the Holy Prophet (p.b.u.h.) , named Aisha was virgin at the time of marriage. There is a common confusion about her age at the time of her marriage with the Holy Prophet (p.b.u.h.).According to almost all the historians, Asma, the elder sister of Aisha, was 10 years older than Aisha. Asma is reported to die in 73 A.H. (692 A.D.) when she was100 years old,as such at the time of Hijrah she was 27 years old and Aisha was 17 years old and not 7 years old which probably is a mistake due to omission of figure 1.She was delivered to the Holy Prophet (p.b.u.h.) about one year after Hijrah in the month of Shawal. (See this link under the heading "692 : Death" and calculate the actual age of Aisha at the time of her marriage : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asm%C4%81 %27_bint_Abu_Bakr ) Husband and wife are Instructed by the GOD ALMIGHTY (ALLAH) to keep secret of each other. Verse No.187 of chapter 2 of the Holy Qur'aan begins with these instructions: "Permitted to you on the night of the fasts,is the approach to your wives. They are your garments and you are their garments" A l s o p ubl i s h ed at http://www.urdubandhan.com/bazm/view topic.php?f=2&t=7586

I f y o u h a v e n o s h a m e , d o w h a t e v e r y o u l i k e !
We human beings have come through different ages in history: Stone Age, Bronze Age, Iron Age. Historians tell us that these ages are distinguished by the development of technology. Today technology has reduced women to a mere tool in the hands of men! It would be appropriate to call the contemporary age, the 21st century, as the obscene age! This is an era where nudity is riding the crest of the society. Today world has reached such a stage in obscenity that if you were to talk about moral aspects, man-of-theobscene-age will look at you in a curious way as if doubting your very masculinity! Modesty, shame, honour, bashfulness which Islam calls as hayaa is lost. There is NO SENSE of shame whatsoever! How true was our glorious Prophet Muhammad sal-lal-laahu-alaihi-wasallam when he said If you have no shame, then do whatever you like! (Read the full hadeeth here) Nudity is promoted through movies, through cartoon shows, through print media, televisions channels and even through the so-called cricket in the name of IPL ! The best job is done by the advertising media in spreading obscenity and vulgarity among people. It is so embarrassing to sit and watch even a News Broadcast with ones family. You come across a dozen commercial breaks that are fully loaded with obscenity! I dare to ask the Deodorant companies and advertisement agencies, are your mothers dead? Do you ever have daughters? Will you strip your sisters and make them run behind a man using your own deodorant brand? What is the purpose of a deodorant? To attract 100 girls! What message you are conveying through such advertisements? You want to sell the product. Sell! Why the hell are you creating such filthy advertisements? The Television channels have no manners whatsoever. They simply shift the ball to the Advertising Standard Council. They have approved, so we are telecasting! Have you mortgaged your brain in the Bank of Obscenity Unlimited? Nay! materialism has made you worse than animals. For, some animals do not mate in public!! The meat of the matter is whether it is government or television channels or advertising media all have their own definition of obscenity. For them a girl dressed in just half-ameter cloth is not nudity! It is progress! It is liberation! They are happy that they have freed women of the burden of dress! Man has gone so far in shamelessness that today modesty is considered as a sign of backwardness! People are upset at Muslim woman dressed in hijab because she curtails their freedom of gazing! Man must understand the natural laws of Islam. The only alternative to help create a peaceful world. Let me refer to this widely mentioned reference: Nobel Peace Prize winner Tawakkul Karman, The mother of Yemens revolution, when asked about her Hijab by journalists and how it is not proportionate with her level of intellect and education, replied: Man in early times was almost naked, and as his intellect evolved he started wearing clothes. What I am today and what Im wearing represents the highest level of thought and civilization that man has achieved, and is not regressive. Its the removal of clothes again that is a regression back to the ancient times. Source Man must submit to the Guidance of his Creator. Man must go back to Modesty, his natural root. Satan threatens you with poverty and orders you to immorality, while Allah promises you forgiveness from Him and bounty. And Allah is allEncompassing and Knowing. (Surah al Baqarah 2: 268) Jazakallahu Khayra for reading this post. http://yassarnalquran.wordpress.com/ 2013/04/29/if-you-have-no-shame-dowhatever-you-like/#more-4366 Vassalam. MuQeet

Say sorry at the right moment to reduce the anger of others. For every 10 minutes you are angry you lose 600 seconds of happiness. Nobody can disgrace us other than ourselves. So why get angry. Nobody can make you angry without your consent. You cannot change others as easily as you can change yourself.

Why did prophet Mohammad (pbuh) marry many wives, and who were they, their names and brief background on each one of them (may Allah bless them all).
When people hear that the prophet had many wives they conclude without muchthought that the prophet was a sensuous man. However, a quick historical review of his marriages, proves otherwise. When he was twenty-five years old he married for the first time. His wife, Khadijah, was fifteen years older than he. She remained the only wife of the prophet for the next twenty-five years, until she died (may Allah be pleased with her). Only after her death, did the prophet marry other women. Now, it is obvious thatif the prophet was after physical pleasure he did not have to wait until he was more than fifty years old to start marrying more wives. He lived in a society in which it was quite acceptable to have many wives. But the prophet remained devoted to his only wife for twenty-five years. When she died she was sixty-five years old. His later marriages were for various reasons. Some marriages were with the view tohelp the women whose husbands had been killed while they were defending theirfaith. Others were with a view to cement relationships with devoted followers like Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him. Yet others were to build bridges with various tribes who were otherwise at war with the Muslims. When the prophet became their relative through marriage, their hostilities calmed down, and much bloodshed was averted. Recent non-Muslim writers who had the opportunity to study the life of the prophet first-hand reach a similar conclusion about his plural marriages. John L. Esposito, Professor of Religion and Director of the Centre for International Studies at the College of the Holy Cross, says that most of these marriages had "political and social Bakhabar motives" (Islam: The Straight Path, Oxford University Press, 1988, p. 19). This he explained as follows: "As was customary for Arab chiefs, many were political marriages to cement alliances. Others weremarriages to the widows of his companions who had fallen in combat and were in need of protection" (John L. Esposito, Islam: The Straight Path, pp. 19-20). Esposito reminds us of the following historical fact: "Though less common, polygynywas also permitted in biblical and even in post biblical Judaism. From Abraham, David, and Solomon down to the reformation period, polygyny was practiced"(p. 19). Another non-Muslim Caesar E. Farah writes as follows: "In the prime of his youth andadult years Muhammad remained thoroughly devoted to Khadijah and would have none other for consort. This was an age that looked upon plural marriages with favor and in a society that in pre-Biblical and postBiblical days considered polygamy an essential feature of social existence. David had six wives and numerous concubines (2 Samuel 5:13; 1 Chronicles 3:1-9, 14:3) and Solomon was said to have had as many as 700 wives and 300 concubines (1 Kings 11:3). Solomon'sson Rehoboam had 18 wives and 60 concubines (2 Chronicles 11:21). The New Testament contains no specific injunction against plural marriages. It was commonplace for the nobility among the Christians and Jews to contract plural marriages. Luther spoke of it with toleration" (Caesar E. Farah, Islam: Beliefs and Observances, 4th edition, Barron's, U.S. 1987, p. 69). Caesar Farah then concluded that Muhammad's plural marriages were due "partly to political reasons and partlyto his concern for the wives of his companions who had fallen in battle defending the nascent Islamic community" (p. 69). 1. KHADIJAH: She was 40 years old when she proposed to marry the Prophet when he was 25 years old. After 15years of their marriage he became a prophet. She had been married twice before she married Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). Her first husband was Aby Haleh Al Tamemy and her second husband was Oteaq Almakzomy. They had both died leaving Khadijah a widower. Khadijah died in 621A.D. This was the same year the Prophet ascended into heaven (Meraj). 2. SAWDA BINT ZAM'A: Her first husband was Al Sakran Ibn Omro Ibn Abed Shamz. He died within a few days after his return from Ethiopia. She was 65 years old, poor, and had no one to care for her. This was why Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) married her. 3. AISHA SIDDIQA: A woman named Kholeah Bint Hakeem suggested that Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) marry Aishah, the daughter of Aby Bakr, to form a close relationship with Aby Bakr's family. She was already engaged to Jober Ibn Al Moteam Ibn Oday. At this time Jober was not yet a Muslim. The people of Makkah did not object to Aishah becoming married because although she was young, she was mature enough to understand the responsibility of marriage. Prophet Muhammad (bpuh) was engaged to Aishah for 2 years before he married her. Aby Bakr was the first leader after Prophet Muhammad's (pbuh) death. 4. HAFSAH BINT U'MAR: She was the daughter of Omar, the second Calipha. Omar asked Othman to marry Hafsah. Othman refused because his wife had recently died and Othman did not want to remarry. Omar then went to Aby Bakr but he also refused to marry Hafsah. Aby Bakr knew that the Prophet had already considered marrying Hafsah. Omar then went to Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and complained that Othman and Aby Bakr did not want to marry his daughter. The Prophet told Omar that his daughter will marry and Othman will also remarry. Othman married the daughter of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), Om Kolthoom, and Hafsah married the Prophet. This made Omar and Othman both happy. 5. ZAYNAB BINT KHUZAYMA: Her husband died in the battle of Uhud, leaving her poor and with several children. She was old when Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) married her. She

Part-5
Better Deeds, Best Reward This is Part 5 on the series Beyond Excellence: The Making of a Muhsin, by brother MuQeet To those who spend their life in this world striving for excellence, Allah guarantees that He will reward them in the most befitting manner. So that Allah may expiate from them the evil of what they did and give them the reward, according to the best of what they used to do (39:35) And when the Allah-fearing are asked: What has your Lord revealed? they answer: Something excellent! Good fortune in this world awaits those who do good; and certainly the abode of the Hereafter is even better for them. How excellent is the abode of the Allah-fearing! (16:30) In Surah Al Rahman, Allah makes an eloquent statement: Can the reward of goodness be any other than goodness? (55:60) In Surah al Qasas, Allah makes a goodly promise, Wadan Hasana: Then is he whom We have promised a good promise which he will obtain like he for whom We provided enjoyment of worldly life [but] then he is, on the Day of Resurrection, among those presented [for punishment in Hell]? (28:61) In Surah Saad, Allah announces nearness and an excellent place of return: Indeed an exalted place of nearness awaits him and an excellent resort (38:40) The Great Magnanimity of Bakhabar Almighty Allah is distinctly evident from this verse of Surah al Qasas: If any does good, the reward to him is better than his deed; but if any does evil, the doers of evil are only punished (to the extent) of their deeds (28:84) The reward for being righteous in this world is not just Paradise, it is even more. The beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) reveals this fact in the following hadith: Suhaib (radhi allahu anahu) reports that the Messenger of Allah said, When men of Paradise will be settled in their abodes, Allah will ask them if they liked that He should give them something more. Men of Paradise will reply, Hast not You brightened our faces, saved us from Hell and given us Paradise? (What else is there we shall desire now?) The Prophet said, Then the curtain will be lifted and they will see Allah face to face and nothing would be more pleasant than the sight of their Lord. The Prophet (peace be upon him) then recited this verse of the Quran: For them who have done good is the best [reward] and extra. (10:26). (Muslim) The bonus in the form of Allah Revealing Himself to the dwellers of Paradise is the most sublime of all rewards! How lofty that scene would be when Muhsineen will be able to see Allah face to face!Subhanallah! May Allah bless us, guide us, help us to become worthy of this sublime reward. M y T o p 1 0 I n d i a n R o l e M o d e l s !
by Ramesh Mahadevan Here is the much-awaited list of Ramesh Mahadevan's Top Ten Indian role models. This list is based on my own, highly subjective, loose criteria of what constitutes a good role model. We now live at a time when we Indians are pushing ourselves to hitherto unattained, high levels of excellence in field after field, in discipline after discipline. Gone are the days when someone merely had to be physically present on a job for ten years to be considered an expert (and eventually go on to become a 'holy cow' by coasting along for another ten years). Folks, finally, the best among us are truly world class and are terrific examples for generations to come. Of course, the 'Indian role model' has to have a significant desi component should have been born or brought up (or both) in India. So, NRIs qualify. But persons of Indian origin who are a generation or more removed from India, such as V.S. Naipaul, were not considered. And only living persons were deemed eligible. After I made up the list, the main thing I found in common among the ten people is their level of excellence. Almost all of them appeared on the scene with an incredible bang and kept staying on top of their passion throughout. And during their long, sustained tenure, they have been prolific. Simplicity, making extraordinary efforts against extraordinary odds, social consciousness and making their marks in many varied disciplines also seemed a running theme among my role models. (In alphabetical order of their first names) (1) President Abdul Kalam: Dream, dream and dream. Then translate your dreams into thoughts and then into action... is President Kalam's favorite mantra. His life itself is an example of this philosophy rising from a fisherman's village to ending up in the presidential palace and along the way launching a bunch of missiles and winning a few 'Padma' (and Bharat Ratna) awards. His simplicity is remarkable, considering the presidential office in India still has Raj vestiges. (They even had a person just to tie the president's shoelaces. President Bakhabar Kalam got rid of this humiliating practice.) There are all kinds of stories of his mingling with children and giving them pep talks, and how he drove up to Mrs. M.S. Subbalakshmi's residence to personally present her the Bharat Ratna award. He is everything we dream in the highest ranking Indian high-tech savvy, passionate, secular, inspiring, hard working and approachable. If you don't already know, this bachelor and vegetarian writes poems and diddles with his veena in his spare time. (2) Prof. Amartya Sen: Nobel Prize winner in economics and currently on the faculty in the Trinity College in England. He was a full professor at the Jadavpur University at the age of 24! At a time when Nobel prizes in economics were doled out to any economist who cooked up yet another idea for the western multinational companies to make a fast buck, Prof. Sen's work showed that economics is best studied by integrating it with ethics, humanism and philosophical ideas. And that market reforms are not enough to alleviate poverty. At a macro level, he is a part of this huge and burgeoning breed of Bengali academicians that is teaching all over the world. I personally feel that our IITs and other institutions of higher learning ought to say a big 'Thank you' to these inspiring Bengali professors and to the Bengali passion for higher education. (3) A.R. Rahman: He has India dancing to his little finger. In my opinion, he is the greatest music composer of India, all times, with a complete mastery of the Eastern and Western music basics. A great arranger as well as a sound engineer. A high school dropout who since attended the Trinity College with scholarship. He has worked with almost all great names in India and quite a few famous ones abroad. To his credit, he also introduced numerous new singers and artistes. Before landing in movies, he had composed over 300 jingles in his advertising career, when he went by his given name Dileep. My favorite songs from an obscure Tamil movie, 'Taj Mahal'. (4) Arundhati Roy: Probably the most well-known world citizen from India. A truly remarkable writer who won the Booker Award, the first ever by an Indian. But I am more impressed with her as an activist, probably because her position on several issues resonates with mine. Her relentless campaign against the so-called WTO sponsored 'globalization' is truly inspiring. The socalled globalization, in my opinion, is just a euphemism for the Western multinationals to plunder the world resources leaving everyone high and dry, except for a small coterie of people associated closely with those corporations. Every time we turn the TV on, we see yet another white man lose his white-collar job to an Indian. Fair enough. But the thousands in India who lose their jobs because of the onslaught of the likes of Pepsi and Hallmark, unfortunately, never get any airtime. (I am not opposed to capitalism and globalization only to their present, indiscriminate WTO version.) Her speech at the recent World Social Forum was stirring. She was also among the e a r l i e s t t o t a ke o n t h e I n d i a n government for its gratuitous nuclear explosion and the Bush administration for its immoral, illegal and unnecessary war in Iraq. No wonder greats like Norm Chomski quote her. Arundhati's mother, Mary Roy, is also a social activist of sorts she waged a long, legal battle against an obscure inheritance law. (5) Azim Premji: This bachelor, who travels by economy class and drives his own car and sometimes eats at roadside restaurants, was at one time the second richest man in the world (even now worth around eight billion dollars). He transformed a moribund company like Wipro (which made edible oil, among other things) into a high-tech superpower. (6) Karnam Malleswari: Winning an individual, Olympic bronze medal in a nation of athletic non-achievers is such a remarkable feat, indeed. She almost never made it to the team and, at the last minute, had to participate in a different weight category and yet she managed to win the only Olympic medal ever to be won by an Indian woman. (P.T. Usha lost her medal by one hundredth of a

28

second). I know Leander Paes won an Olympic medal for tennis. But then, Olympics are not the seminal events in tennis. By the way, a trivia question are there any male Indian athletes who won individual Olympic medals? The answer: Norman Pritchard, an Anglo-Indian, who won it for 200 m running and 200 m hurdles in the year 1900 in Athens, when the games were not even called the Olympics. (7) Kiran Bedi: The first Indian woman IPS officer who has always transformed her adversities into opportunities. Even her 'punishment' tenure as the superintendent of the notorious Tihar Jail in Delhi, with over 9000 hard core prisoners (now over 8999 inmates, after the daring escape of Rana, the Phoolan Devi murderer last week), turned out to be a remarkable experience where she tried to reform the prisoners by conducting yoga classes and other humanistic activities. A supercop, a reformer, youth Asian tennis champion, a public speaker, environmentalist and now she even acted in a short documentary film as well (as a rag picker). Of course, in Hindi movies, we have had boatloads of actresses doing a Kiran Bedi! (8) Sachin Tendulkar: He is probably a veritable national treasure in our cricket-crazed country. He is so prolific he is supposed to score a century every third time he bats. He is the only Indian to have scored a century on debut in the Ranji, Duleep and Irani trophy games. Says Ravi Shastri, the ex-skipper of India, of Sachin, He is someone sent from up there to play cricket. He has never been dropped from the Indian team and considering he has just recently won the Man of the Series award for the latest World Cup, he is in no danger of being unemployed for a while. (9) Sandeep Pandey: This ex-Berkeley graduate and IIT Kanpur professor gave it all up one day and cofounded ASHA, one of the most successful social and educational NGO efforts in India. ASHA has over a thousand volunteers and has chapters in many other countries. (10) Shabana Azmi: If both the Hindu and Muslim extremists issue fatwas against her, she must be doing something good! This actress-turned-social activist has taken on such causes as the plight of Mumbai slumdwellers and national integration. Probably the best actress of India, ever, (especially after the premature death of Smita Patil) she was never afraid to take on unorthodox movie roles, right from a whorehouse madam to a lesbian. Gracious, fearless, intelligent and a beautiful person is how someone describes her. Also considered (listed In no particular order) Narayana Murthy: The boss of Infosys. Did you know that the Murthy household does not have a maid or a cook? And that their children travel by school bus instead of cars? And Mrs. Murthy teaches in a local engineering college? Some people don't let money take over their lives!
