Withdrawable and disconnecting circuit breakers

for compact air-insulated switchgear, 72.5 420 kV

Operational availability a key issue

Modern society requires safe and continuous electrical supply. The purpose of all electrical power systems is to generate, transfer and distribute electrical energy at the desired availability, quality and cost, and with minimal risk to people and the environment. Maintenance is a decisive factor The most common reason for a substation or parts of a substation being removed from service is maintenance of individual devices. To attain optimal operational availability, it is thus necessary that shut-downs for maintenance at a substation can be planned and that alternative connections to important loads can be arranged. The substation must also be designed so that problems in one part do not affect other parts of the substation. Problems that require direct disconnection of substation parts cause unplanned interruptions of the electrical supply. Low failure rate ABBs switchgear apparatuses have very low failure rates when the specified maintenance is performed. The most important and mechanically most advanced substation apparatus the circuit breaker has undergone significant improvements over the years. The two biggest reasons for this are that SF6 replaced compressed air and oil as interrupting medium, and that operating mechanism technology has been refined. New technical solutions based on many years of experience ABB Power Technologies in Ludvika, Sweden, is the only manufacturer in the world with all vital apparatuses for substations in its product assortment. Development of ratings and dimensions can therefore be coordinated, which simplifies the construction of complete substations. ABB has extensive experience in building substations for high voltage systems, and substation design is further developed at the same rate as for the included devices. In this brochure, we will be presenting our compact withdrawable and disconnecting circuit breakers and their advantages.

Substations without conventional disconnectors

In traditional substation solutions, the circuit breaker, due to its mechanical complexity, was previously the device that required the most maintenance. Product development for ABBs circuit breakers over the past 50 years has brought improved technical performance. Moreover, the need for maintenance has decreased to the point that the breakers are now nearly maintenance-free. In conventional substations, disconnectors are still installed at each side of the circuit breaker so that it can be disconnected during maintenance. Because the contacts of conventional disconnectors are not shielded from the effects of the surrounding environment, it is these devices that require the most maintenance. With our innovative combined units, we have created the capability to design substations without conventional disconnectors, which improves operational availability. Increased availability Maintenance-intensive disconnectors even those connected directly to a busbar are eliminated, which reduces the need to take the busbar out of service. This permits simpler busbar solutions. With our modern SF6 circuit breakers as a base, we now offer two alternatives that provide opportunities to both simplify substations and save space. One is the withdrawable circuit breaker WCB, which is designed to be a part of a complete type-tested substation bay. The circuit breaker is trolley-mounted and can be moved between the connected and disconnected positions using a motorized operating mechanism. The fixed primary contacts are maintenancefree. The other alternative is the disconnecting circuit breaker DCB, where the breakers own contacts, which are protected in the SF6 breaking chamber, also provide the disconnecting function. The DCB thus replaces the conventional combination of circuit breaker and adjacent disconnectors. A reliable interlocking system in combination with a motorized grounding switch and clear indication of the contact position provide complete personal safety. New opportunities With our withdrawable and disconnecting circuit breakers, new opportunities are provided for thinking along new lines when designing compact substations with simpler layouts for single or double busbars, or other configurations. Fewer foundations, low material requirements and small substation surfaces mean less impact on the environment. Our prefabricated modules require less labor, both during installation, and during service and maintenance.

WCB withdrawable circuit breaker for 72.5 300 kV

The WCB (Withdrawable Circuit Breaker) for the 72.5 300 kV range consists of a trolleymounted standard circuit breaker of our wellknown LTB or HPL types. For the breakers opening and closing operation, our well-reputed, motorized, spring operating mechanisms are used the BLK or BLG. Connection to the line and busbar is performed with maintenance-free contacts. Movement from the connected position to the disconnected position is accomplished with a motor unit that is interlocked when the circuit breaker is closed. Two configurations of withdrawable circuit breakers can be supplied, high-built for airinsulated outdoor substations and low-built for indoor substations. Equipment included in a circuit breaker bay The complete circuit breaker bay, including busbars, is type-tested in accordance with international standards. The high voltage equipment includes all necessary functions for a circuit breaker bay and consists of: Circuit breaker with spring operating mechanism (single- or three-pole operation) (For WCB LTB 72.5-145 and single-pole operation Motor Drive is used) Trolley with moving mechanism Maintenance-free fixed and movable primary contacts The following options are available: Oil-insulated current transformer type IMB installed on the circuit breaker modules frame Busbar for high-built, outdoor substations Busbar for low-built, indoor substations Switchsync Controller for controlled opening and closing Line entrance modules Line entrance modules (LEM) can consist of the following devices: Oil-insulated, capacitor voltage transformer (CP) Grounding switch (NVA or NVB) Surge arrester (PEXLIM) The modules are preinstalled on the low-built variant and delivered as stand-alone units for the high-built variant.

Combined - disconnecting circuit breaker for 72.5 - 420 kV

Combined, the disconnecting circuit breaker (DCB) is basically a standard type LTB or HPL circuit breaker that is also type-tested in accordance with disconnector standards. The circuit breaker contacts in the open position are thus open disconnector contacts as well. Combined replaces the conventional combination of circuit breaker and separate disconnectors. It permits a simpler and more compact substation layout, with increased availability due to reduced maintenance requirements. The disconnecting circuit breaker is equipped with a visible motor-operated grounding switch with high mechanical strength and minimal maintenance requirements. Combined can be single- or three-pole operated with a BLK or BLG spring operating mechanism, or with Motor Drive, the new digitally controlled operating mechanism. Up to 245 kV, the circuit breakers have one breaking chamber per phase, and in the 362420 kV range, two breaking chambers per phase. Ratings for current and voltage comply with those for the LTB and HPL circuit breakers. The disconnecting circuit breakers fulfill the requirements of the IEC and ANSI standards for circuit breakers and disconnectors, and the new IEC standard that specifically addresses testing of disconnecting circuit breakers. Service life for the circuit breaker/disconnector contacts is verified through type testing with 10,000 mechanical operations. Safety and interlocking The visible grounding shows that the disconnected part of the substation is not energized. To prevent accidental switching of the circuit breaker and the grounding switch, there is an advanced logical interlocking system that can be remotely controlled and locally padlocked. Reliable mechanically interlinked indications show the positions of the circuit breaker and the interlocking system. Also contributing to safety are the circuit breakers composite insulators, which besides good dielectric properties, withstand mechanical stresses and external damage. Compact substations Thanks to conventional disconnectors being eliminated and the need for maintenance minimized, the opportunity is provided for simplifying substation layouts and reducing installation, service and maintenance costs.

Solutions with compact switchgear modules

Double busbar systems, which were previously used to safeguard operation during circuit breaker and disconnector maintenance, can in most cases now be replaced by single busbars with unchanged or improved operational availability.

The SF6 circuit breakers long maintenance interval in comparison with conventional disconnectors, and the new apparatus with integrated disconnecting function, enable substation solutions to be simplified.
