Senior Olympics registration deadline is June 27


June 27 is the last day to register for the events in the Downriver Senior Olympics. Seniors representing the Romulus Senior Center can sign up to compete for medals in a baking contest, softball throw, ring toss, football throw, Frisbee throw, soccer kick, euchre, pickle ball, tennis, bocce ball, pinochle, horseshoes, billiards, darts, shuffleboard, ping pong, car show, chili cook-off, golf, bridge, swimming, basketball shoot, ballroom dancing, one-mile run and bowling. The City of Ecorse will host the 2013 Olympics. Events are scheduled for July 29August 2 all over the Downriver area, including swimming at the Romulus Athletic Center. See Rose Swidan for the registration form, which details all of the events. Romulus seniors who choose not to participate in the 28th annual Senior Olympics are urged to cheer on their friends during the competition. Special thanks to Chief Judge Tina Brooks Green for sponsoring the entry fee for members of the Romulus Senior Center.

Flag Day
Members of the Romulus Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) will present a special Flag Day salute at the Romulus Senior Center at 1 p.m. June 14. The ceremony will continue at the Senior Towers. A new American flag will be presented at both locations. Afterward, hot dogs, chips and ice cream will be served at the Senior Center. Everyone is invited.

Portofino Bingo Cruise


Romulus seniors are invited to a Senior Bingo Cruise on June 19. At 10 a.m., a bus will transport seniors from the Romulus Senior Center to the Portofino restaurant in Wyandotte. Seniors will board the Portofino Friendship boat and, after a wonderful lunch at 11 a.m., the boat will cruise the Detroit River while seniors play bingo, take part in raffles, receive gifts and enjoy the sights. The boat will return to the dock about 3 p.m. Seats are limited at $33 each. Register at the Senior Center. Director Rose Swidan said last years bus to the bingo cruise bus was filled and all Romulus seniors had a great time.

Tigers Baseball
Tickets are on sale for a Romulus seniors day at the August 22 Detroit Tigers baseball game vs. the Minnesota Twins. Ticket holders will leave the Senior Center at 11 a.m. for the 1 p.m. game. Tickets are $23 for lower-level seats, with transportation included. Sign up now. Seats are limited.

Bingo is played at Noon Mondays and Wednesdays at the Senior Center. Everyone is invited to play for free. Thanks to our sponsors. Romulus City Treasurer Stacy Paige will provide pizza on June 12. Mission Home Health will provide pizza on June 19.

Game Days & Exercise Class


Members of the Romulus Senior Center can play games and exercise throughout the week: Bingo is played at noon Mondays and Wednesdays. Bunco is played at noon Tuesdays. Pinochle and other games are played during Wednesday Fun Days. Game Day is scheduled for noon Thursdays. Pokeno is played at noon Fridays. A new stress-free chair exercise class has been added to the Thursday schedule, starting at 9:30 a.m. To register, call the Senior Center at (734) 9554120. Seniors who enjoy quilting and each others company gather at 6 p.m. Thursdays.

Fun Trips for Seniors


Sign up for trips at the Romulus Senior Center or call (734) 9554120. All trips must be paid in full upon booking. The admission prices include transportation. CAESARS WINDSOR June 3 and 17. Receive $15 in casino incentives. A passport or enhanced license is required. Admission $10. FIREKEEPERS DAY TRIP June 8. Receive $20 in coin and $5 in food. Admission is $35.

Motor City Casino


Romulus seniors are invited to visit Motor City Casino on Tuesday, June 18. Up to two buses leave the Romulus Senior Center at 9 a.m. The cost is $10 per person. The casino provides $20 in credit upon arrival. Seats are limited. For more details, call the Senior Center at (734) 955-4120.

Annual Flea Market


The Romulus Historical Societys annual flea market is scheduled for 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, June 22, at Romulus Historical Park, 11147 Hunt Street. Vendor tables are available for $15 per set up, with vendors providing their own tables. For more information, contact Cathy Morse at (734) 941-6361. Romulus Farmers Market


The Romulus Farmers Market opens June 1 for the 2013 season. The market is open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays though October at the Historical Park Pavilion at 11147 Hunt Street near Goddard Road in Downtown Romulus. Vendors will sell such items as fresh eggs and produce, homemade baked goods and handmade crafts. There will be childrens activities, too. The first Saturday of each month will feature special events: June 1 Health and Wellness Fair July 6 Community Picnic August 3 Carnival Day September 7 Library Fun Day October 5 Harvest Collection

The Romulus Senior Center will be closed Friday, June 21, which is an unpaid city furlough day.

Party Rooms for Rent


The Romulus Senior Center is a great place to celebrate birthdays, baby showers, family reunions and wedding receptions. The beautiful banquet halls and facilities at the Senior Center are available for rent at very affordable rates. There are rooms that can hold up to 120 people and they are available any day of the week. Bring your own caterer or make arrangements to use the Senior Center kitchen. Caregiver Support Group


If you have ever wished you had an understanding person with whom to speak, know that you are not alone. A monthly Caregiver Support Group at the Romulus Senior Center provides helpful information and assistance, including information on Alzheimers and dementia care. Meetings are generally scheduled for 10 a.m. to noon the fourth Wednesday of the month (June 19) in the Board Room of the Senior Center, located at 36525 Bibbins.

Construction Study Session


Downtown residents and business owners are invited to an informational study session scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Monday, June 10, at Romulus City Hall, 11111 Wayne Road. Goddard Road is scheduled for reconstruction in the spring of 2014 from Wayne Road to Romaine Street. At the meeting, city staff and the planning consultant will present the concept streetscape improvements and Downtown branding plan. Need Food?
Low-income residents are eligible for free commodities each month at the Senior Center. A variety of food is provided by The Emergency Food Assistance Program of Wayne County Senior Services. This months food distribution begins at 9:30 a.m. May 16. Romulus Senior Director Rose Swidan encourages anyone in need of food any time to contact the center at (734) 955-4120.
