Course Description This course will focus on the relationship between language and society and the ways in which language varies according to social characteristics. There will be an emphasis on the linguistics aspects of inter-ethnic relationships in multicultural societies such as Malaysia. It will also examine language policy and language planning, the social aspects of language learning and teaching and language change, shift, decline and maintenance. The mode of delivery will be lectures, group discussions and presentations. The learners are expected to do a lot of independent reading, research and study. Course Outcomes Upon completion of TSL 753 a student should be able to:

CO 1 - demonstrate critical awareness of debates and policies concerning the relationship between language and society in a multicultural environment in the application of sociolinguistic theories to language teaching. CO 2- examine critically the role of language and languages in historical and contemporary South Asian Societies for the enhancement of professional knowledge CO 3- evaluate some recent research in the field of sociolinguistics CO 4 - conduct and present a small research project in the field of sociolinguistics, CO 5 - relate sociolinguistic concepts and data to second language teaching and learning.

In their report students will display their ability to use information and knowledge effectively in order to form new understanding and disseminate knowledge through data analysis.they also need to demonstrate their ability as a member of a research group.Research findings need to show their ability to analyse data , interpret them critically and creatively and relate them to relevant issues in language learning. The students will also need to integrate theory into practice as well as reflect on their own professional practice and ethical issue. It is also an evidence of their ability to communicate effectively in writing.
