Dear Teachers, Once again, Macmillan ELT are delighted to invite you to the training highlight of the year the Macmillan Teachers Day which will take place at Hotel Meli Lebreros, on Saturday 12th May, 2012. At the Macmillan Teachers Day our principal aim is to offer practical training workshops that reflect the reality of todays classrooms so that you can keep up to date with the latest in pedagogical practice. Were certain that you will take away with you ideas and activities you can use in your school the next day. As always, the Macmillan team will be there to give you a warm welcome, present our new materials and answer any queries you have. In addition, Macmillan Training Services will be on hand to present their latest offers for face-to-face and online training based on two years of successful implementation of their courses. As the Macmillan Teachers Day is extremely popular, we encourage you to reserve your place as soon as possible. To make registration easier, we have an online registration process. You can reserve your place by visiting the Teacher Training Events section of the Macmillan website and completing the online registration form. This will pop up when you click on the map for your area. Once the process is complete, you will receive an email to confirm a place has been booked for you. Jill is a teacher, author and teacher trainer. She has 25 years of experience in teaching English, developing her career in London, Madrid and Barcelona. Her latest publication is Captain Jack, the new three level Infant course published by Macmillan ELT, 2011. Jill currently teaches phonics in a school near Barcelona.

Emma Thomas
Emma has taught English for over 20 years to students of all ages and levels in the UK, Brazil and Spain. She has been Young Learner Coordinator and DOS at International House Seville, delivered teacher training courses and prepared Primary and Secondary school teachers for the oposiciones exams. Emma has also worked in a state-aided (concertado) school teaching conversation English to all levels. Emma is currently a teacher trainer for Macmillan ELT.

In this practical session we will look at avariety of motivating learning activities and be shownhow to develop emotional intelligence in the classroom. We will also have fun with phonics/pronunciation. Captain Jack will be helping out. Be prepared to play pirates!

Passionate about education and language learning in particular, Margie has been involved in ELT for many years in the capacity of teacher and teacher trainer. She has worked in France, Italy, the UK and Spain and with all levels in both the state and private sectors. Margie holds an MA in Teaching English to Young Learners and is interested in materials and teacher development. She has been a teacher trainer with Macmillan English Language Teaching for the past ten years.

Whats in a story?
(3 to 5-year-olds)

Writing in a foreign language is a struggle when you are eight or nine years old. Children need to be motivated to encourage them to try. By personalising writing, we give our children a reason to experiment with the language and consolidate their knowledge. We will look at a range of writing activities, including a personalized dossier.

M Jess Pramo
M Jess is an experienced teacher and teacher trainer. She is also the co-author of several coursebooks. She has run methodology courses for CEPs in Madrid and has given numerous workshops at language teaching conferences around the country.

We already know how useful stories, songs and games can be for childrens language development but should they do more? The key competences (competencias bsicas) remind us of the need to focus on the whole child in a way that takes account of their physical, intellectual, social and emotional learning needs. This session aims to demonstrate a range of story-related activities that enable children to develop key competences and suggests ways in which they might be evaluated.

Roisin OFarrell
Roisin is a teacher, with 20 years experience, working in Seville. She specialises in Younger Learners and is responsible for teacher training and materials development. She is a regular speaker for Macmillan at ACEIA, TESOL and other conferences. Roisin is co-author of levels 1-4 of Quest, Macmillans latest course for primary.

Ed is co Founder and Director of Interacting. As a leading international specialist in language teaching theatre, he has run courses and events for teachers all over the world for the last 22 years. His personal passion for sport and literature are combined in his profession of theatre and games.

As the role of digital materials in education increases, interactive whiteboards are steadily becoming a regular feature in todays classroom. This session offers practical ideas on how to make the most of your coursebook using the IWB. We will look at activities to engage and motivate your students whilst striking an effective balance between technology and tradition.

Conchi Tejada
Conchi teaches very young learners in a state school. Before that, she taught English in far and diverse countries such as Yemen, Azerbaijan and Laos. Her interests lie in creatively combining first language classroom techniques with English language teaching and investigating how to fully engage very young learners in class. Shes currently putting her Ferran Adri-inspired fusions into practice in classrooms around Extremadura.

Ceri Jones
Ceri has worked as a teacher of Adults and Young Learners in Hungary, Italy, Spain and the UK. She holds an MA in TEFL from Reading University and has been writing materials for theELT sector for over 10 years, including student books for the popular Macmillan courses, Inside Out Advanced, Straightforward Intermediate, Straightforward Upper-intermediateand the workbook for Definitions 2. She is currently teaching and training in Cadiz and developing materials for use withauthentic texts.

We will be looking at songs, chants and phonics from coursebooks, adding actions and other special touches that will help them work in the classroom. Be prepared to sing along and join in!

Storytelling is an art that people around the world share. When a story is told well, language becomes intuitive and learning inhibitions fall by the wayside. An engaging example of such presentation is Kamishibai, or paper theatre, a Japanese form of picture storytelling. In this session, we will learn how to use this fascinating way of telling stories by integrating it into circle time and developing whole class and individual activities around the paper stage.

In this session, we look at how to identify mixed ability in the secondary classroom and provide strategies for dealing with it efficiently and effectively. We shall take into consideration the setting of rules; the organising of groupwork and co-operative learning and working with different materials. We shall also consider aspects of evaluation and self-evaluation with mixed-ability groups. Some of this session will be illustrated with video footage of students from 4 ESO.

Donna Shaw
Donna has worked for 20 years as a teacher of young learners and has been involved in the professional development of teachers in Portugal and Spain. She has a Masters Degree in Education from Manchester University and regularly speaks at English language teaching conferences around the country. Donna is the co-author of the Macmillan primary course Find Out! and is the author of levels 5 and 6 of Macmillans higher level primary course Footprints. She is also the co-author of levels 5 and 6 of Macmillan Natural and Social Science.

This talk looks at the nature of games and learning. Starting from the historical perspective of how games were used to build and maintain empires, we look at the components that make up a successful game and explore the benefits, both social and linguistic, of playing.

Unleashing the power of images

One of the main challenges we face when teaching natural and social science in English is helping our pupils read and write informational texts. In this practical workshop we will explore different strategies to help our pupils understand new information and concepts when they read. We will also look at a variety of activities which encourage pupils to research, write and think about content. These activities aim to help pupils become more engaged in the subject and to make their learning more meaningful and memorable.

From digital cameras to mental snapshots, images have the power to stimulate, activate and motivate. They can be springboards, centre pieces or memory hooks. They build bridges with the world outside the classroom. In this hands-on workshop we will be exploring how to unleash their power through a series of detailed, practical lesson ideas aimed at a range of levels and backgrounds.
