XH Times has now completed one year. I am pleased to present to you the first issue for the academic year 2012-13. The rhythm of school life has its characteristic repetitiveness. Some of the activities of the school recur year after year. So a regular reader will find this newsletter somewhat repetitive in style and content. Yet I know that most of you welcome this quarterly communication from your alma mater with much joy. Let us stay connected! Do feel free to email your comments to the XH team. Warmest regards Fr. P. J. James, S.J. Principal

Std. XI Welcome
On 18th June the new Class XI was welcomed by senior students in a simple function organised by the Prefects. Dr. Debabrata Mitra inspired and enriched the freshers by sharing the core values that the school wishes to share with each Xaverian. The Principal introduced the teaching staff of the Plus Two section and highlighted in brief the objectives of the education at Xavier's and shared the expectations of the school for each Xaverian. Of the 211 students in the four sections of Std. XI, 105 had completed their Std X from other schools.
147 Students completed their Std. X from the school. Their assessment was done according to the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) scheme. 21 students secured the highest possible grade (A1) which corresponds to a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 10. The overall indicative average percentage obtained by the students was 83.3%
New Facilities
The extension to the Plus Two section was completed during the summer vacation. This new facility includes three computer labs, a large conference hall and separate modern toilets for boys and girls. The other recent addition was the staff room of the Junior School and new toilets there. These facilities were blessed and inaugurated on June 16th by Fr. Francis Kurien,S.J, the President of the Hazaribag Jesuits Education Society, the Governing Body of the school. With these new facilities added the old toilets were demolished. The shady mulberry had to be felled because it had split from the middle through a hollow in the tree. With these are laid to rest the locus of the fond memories of the many of the old boys.
Gonzaga Day
On Saturday 23rd June, the members of Gonzaga House under the guidance of the teachers in-charge made their House Day a memorable one. A solo bhajan singing competition was conducted for Classes IV-XII. The house captain presented a life-sketch of St. Aloysius Gonzaga. Fr. Vincent Hansdak, S.J., Vice Principal, shared with the assembly some of the inspiring aspects of the life of St. Aloysius Gonzaga.
Teachers' Orientation
June 14-16 the customary summer orientation seminar for the teaching staff was held. The first day was exclusively for the junior members of the faculty who joined the service after 2008. The topics were generally related to the Jesuit educational heritage and legacy. The Principal, Fr. P. J. James, S. J. led the sessions. On June 15-16 Fr. Francis Kurien, S.J, the Provincial Superior of Hazaribag Jesuits provided inputs on parenting and on better understanding of students and their world.
For the third year in the running, a team of recent graduates of the school led by Mr. Rajarshi Maity has been offering career guidance tips to the senior students. On June 23rd the session was for Std. X on streaming for higher studies. On June 25, tips were given to Std. XI-XII aspirants of engineering courses. The programme will continue into July, though somewhat scaled down this year due to the unavailability of the regular members of the team. Meanwhile Raj is trying to connect with more old and new HOXAns to enrich, diversify and stabilise this programme and make it a regular feature of the school year. The united minds consider these sessions as a means of giving something back to their alma mater.
