GOVAN FERRY IS FACING AXE Firm blames lack of passengers

Operators Clyde Marine Services said this week it will stop its scheduled sailings that were meant to cross the river and back every 20 minutes. They said the service was
not paying its way. In fact last year there had been days when the ferry had not carried a single fare-paying passenger. Now the ferry will visit Govan at most three times a day this summer as part of the companys river cruises from the city centre to Braehead Shopping Centre. But the firms online timetable shows that after September it will only operate during holidays. Their decision is a blow to the city council, who spent around 300,000 on building a pontoon for the vessel to berth at Water Row in Govan. A spokesman for the council said: Obviously, wed like to

see as many people as possible able to enjoy the crossing. But, ultimately, this is a commercial decision for the operator. Hamish Munro, Clyde Marine Services managing director, said: The year after the Riverside Museum opened, our passenger numbers collapsed. On several days we had no passengers at all. Given the current economic climate and summer weather trends of past years, the service could not be sustained at previous levels. Fariha Thomas, a Labour councillor for Govan ward, said: The firms decision is very disappointing. I believe the service is quite expensive 3 for adults and 2 for children for a return journey and infrequent but it is not making money. But Glasgow First councillor Stephen Dornan said: This is a total disgrace. According to

the publicity when the service was relaunched, this was meant to have people flocking from the city centre to Govan subway station and then walking down to catch the ferry. But that has never happened. The pontoon is tucked away in a corner behind houses and a car park with only one small sign pointing towards it. There was little advertising for the new Govan Ferry. Few people knew it was there. Id like to see local people get the chance to run this service, perhaps using the old ferries berthed next to the museum. The original Govan ferry ran for 230 years until 1966. Tourism bosses had hoped the revived service could help bring more visitors south of the river. After taking a trip on the new ferry in 2011 city council leader Gordon Matheson said: Im sure that the number of people who want to travel by ferry will ensure that it runs effectively. Nicola Sturgeon, the local MSP and Deputy First Minister, also campaigned for the service.

Imams condemn barbaric killing

And imams have used their Friday prayer sermons to call on people of all faiths and none to obtain their knowledge of Islam from reputable sources and not from charlatans posing as scholars.

MUSLIM leaders in Glasgow have called on all of the citys communities to unite against the forces of hatred following the horrific murder of Drummer Lee Rigby in London last week.

The strong, unequivocal messages of condemnation for the savage killing of Drummer Rigby, and support for his family, were heard by thousands of Muslims who attended Friday prayer services in Glasgow last week. The biggest gathering was at the Central Mosque in the Gorbals. A spokesman for the mosque said: This was a barbaric act that has no basis in Islam and we condemn it unreservedly. Our thoughts are with Drummer Lee Rigby and his family. We understand that the victim was a member of the Armed Forces. Muslims have long served in the countrys Armed Forces, proudly and with honour. This attack on a member of the Armed Forces is dishonourable, and no cause justifies this murder. He added: We respectfully advise Muslims and non-Muslims to obtain their knowledge of Islam from reputable sources and not rely on charlatans posing as scholars. This terrible murder in London

NOT IN OUR NAME: Humza Yousaf condemned the murder

in Woolwich just as many churches, synagogues, gurdwaras and others will be doing over the coming days. The SNP MSP continued: My colleague Kenny MacAskill, the Justice Secretary, has spoken to the Home Office regarding this. And Police Scotland have rightly stated they will take a zero tolerance approach to anyone attempting to use this savage attack as an excuse to commit hate crime. I am encouraged that the Muslim community has unequivocally come forward in this way to condemn this savage murder and say loudly and clearly that this is not in their name. Just as we did after the Glasgow Airport attack or the terrible bombings on July 7, 2005, in London we will stay united. Those who terrorise us wish to divide us but I am confident they will not succeed

may heighten tensions on the streets of the United Kingdom. We call on all our communities, Muslim and non-Muslim, to come together in solidarity to ensure the forces of hatred do not prevail. It is important we allow our police authorities to do their job without speculation. We also urge the utmost vigilance and ask the police authorities to calm tensions. The strong message from Glasgows imams was praised by local MSP Humza Yousaf, who said the citys Muslim community stood as one to proclaim that the murder of Drummer Rigby was not in our name. He said: Communities of all faiths

have rightly come out to stand united in condemnation of the savage murder of Drummer Lee Rigby all our hearts go out to his wife, young son, family and friends. The vast majority of people here understand that these disgraceful actions have no place or justification in Islam. Unfortunately, there is a minority who will attempt to use this murder for their own extreme purposes as we have already seen with the EDL and BNP. Therefore I am pleased that the mosques in Glasgow are using their Friday prayer sermons to unequivocally condemn these attacks and express their solidarity with the community

HOSPICE PLANS ARE APPROVED Complex in park to open in 2016

WORK will start soon on building a new Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice in Bellahouston Park after the plans were approved by Glasgow City Council.
The site, next to the parks Dumbreck Road entrance, is at present a depot for Land & Environmental Services. The hospice hope the new facility will improve existing services and provide muchneeded palliative care to young people aged from 15 to 25. Rhona Baillie, Chief Executive of the Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice, said: This is a major milestone in our route to building a new hospice for Glasgow. It starts us on the road to making the new stateof-the-art facility a reality. Our current home at Carlton Place, Gorbals, is at capacity and has served us exceptionally

Neil wins place at top US university

A FORMER Head Boy at a Southside school has won a place at one of the worlds top universities. Neil McAlpine is to join Princeton in the USA to study for his PhD in chemistry. The ex-pupil of Williamwood High in Clarkston Neil beat global competition to secure his place. In fact, he will be the only student from the UK on his course. He had to travel to London to sit the entrance exams, which were also held in cities around the world. The course at Princeton University in New Jersey starts in August. Neil graduated from Glasgow University last year with a first-class honours degree in chemistry. He is the youngest son of Councillor Ian McAlpine and his wife Kate, who live in Giffnock. Elaine Green, education and equalities convener at East Renfrewshire Council, said: This is truly an incredible achievement.

GREEN PEACE: Artists view of how new hospice will look in Bellahouston Park
well for over 30 years. The new facility will enable us to extend our services in purpose-built facilities situated in stunning parkland surroundings. Once open, our new hospice will enable us for the first time to offer increased facilities for younger patients aged 15 and above, in surroundings that are appropriate for the age group. This includes increased privacy, with single rooms and family accommodation, as well as access to beautiful gardens and increased parking facilities. In addition, we will also be able to offer more flexible out-patient facilities, as well as extended education facilities. Our new hospice will allow us to host national and local training events. The Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice provides free care for more than 1,000 adults and their families each year. Running costs are almost 5million, of which 3million has to come from fundraising and voluntary donations. Rhona added: Were very grateful to everyone helping us make our new hospice a reality for the people of Glasgow. (www.ppwh.org.uk)

QUEEN RAHAT IS FAIR DELIGHTED

May 31, 2013

GOVAN will pay homage to a right royal youngster next week when 11-yearold schoolgirl Rahat Baig is crowned Queen of the Fair.

Then Rahat will take pride of place on a horse-drawn carriage at the head of the Govan Fair Parade as it wends its way through the streets of the ancient burgh. She will be accompanied by her royal assistants, who are all her classmates at the school in Kinning Park. They are the 11-year-old pupils Eve Elliot, Billie Jo Leiper, Mark Wright, Mohammed Halane and Zartashia Hassan. This week Rahat spoke of her delight at being chosen as the new Govan Fair Queen. She explained that all the girls who wanted to be considered had to explain why theyd be suitable

for the historic position. Rahat said: We had to write a bit about ourselves and this was then read out without anyone knowing who had written it. All the pupils then voted for the one they thought was best. I said I was friendly, easy to get along with and good at writing creative stories. I was really delighted when I was picked. My family are even more happy than I am they have been telling everyone. Im really looking forward to being crowned and leading the Govan Fair Parade. Rahats Coronation will be held in the Victory Centre, Langlands Road, at 7pm next Friday. Glasgows oldest parade, with costumes, floats and bands, will then set off from Fairley Street at 7.45pm and head for Elder Park, via Govan Road. There will also be kids fairground rides, stalls and entertainment at Water Row. The following day, Saturday, June 8, Queen Rahat will attend the Govan Fair Fun Day in Elder Park, from 1pm to 5pm. The Fair dates back to 1756 when it was established by the Govan Weavers Society For more details log on to the website www.thegovanfair.org

Special feature highlighting the work of gorbals healthy living network

Volunteer growers are getting set for summer

SUMMER is on the way (we hope!) and things are hotting up in the various gardens tended by Gorbals Healthy Living Network.
Gorbals Growers volunteers can cultivate, pick and eat their own fruit and vegetables. No experience is needed as the GHLN staff can help develop your horticultural skills. Gorbals Growers get together at 10am on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at the GHLN office at 17 Norfolk Court, while at 6pm on Wednesday they meet at the Citizens Garden, Laurieston, next to the Citizens Theatre. On Thursday they gather at 10am at Gorbals Rose Garden in Hutchesontown. Every Friday volunteers meet at 10am at the Old Rose Garden in Richmond Park, Oatlands. And on Sundays at 1pm they return to the Citizens Garden. If you are interested in joining up with the Gorbals Growers just

RESIDENTS in the Laurieston area have embraced Gorbals Healthy Living Networks new Kitchen Waste and Glass Recycling Scheme, with more than 40 households signing up since the start of the year. As part of the project funded by the Climate Challenge Fund (CCF) through Keep Scotland Beautiful, organic waste such as fruit and veg peelings, egg shells, teabags and coffee grounds are being collected and deposited on a community compost heap and in a worm compost bin. On average, more than 40 kilograms of waste per week

is being diverted from going to landfill and is being used to produce compost in which fruit and veg can be grown. GHLN will distribute free veg to those taking part as this will involve residents and volunteer with the full cycle of growing and harvesting. Norfolk Court residents are leading the way and a friendly rivalry has developed between the two tower blocks. GHLN has been running recycling, composting and gardening workshops. Three raised beds will be installed soon to enable residents to grow their own vegetables.

Flower-planting sessions have been held with pupils at St Francis Primary, Hampden School and

Bridgend Nursery, with a new orchard planted in the Oatlands. Residents in supported housing units run by Loretto in the Gorbals have been given help to create raised beds and plant vegetables. Evidence from community groups such as Bridging the Gap and the Carlton Day Centre have reinforced the desire to improve the local environment. And GHLN is keen to revamp derelict sites and develop green spaces while creating more opportunities for all to learn new skills, improve fitness and benefit from being outdoors. Funding from Keep Scotland Beautiful and the Peoples Health Trust has enabled derelict sites to be transformed into community growing spaces. Glasgow City Council and the Central Scotland Green Network have made it possible, through their Stalled Spaces programme, to continue to further develop the Citizens Garden. And thanks to CSV Action Earth Awards, local children can enjoy playing in the wildlife garden, which has tree-trunk stepping stones and a bug hotel.

School switch talks

GLASGOW City Council is to consult on a co-location of an additional support for learning (ASL) school within a Southside secondary school. The plan is for St Oswalds Secondary School, for children with additional support needs, to move into a vacant area in St Margaret Marys Secondary School in Castlemilk. This would provide young people in both schools with inclusion opportunities. Informal discussions have been taking place with the parents and staff in the schools. If the proposal gets passed, St Oswalds pupils would have a set of classrooms but would also be able to use specialist technical, HE, science, drama and PE provision. Stephen Curran, Executive Member for Education and Young People, said: The consultations gives parents and communities the chance to express their views on the proposed merger and co-location of these schools. Council officials have been engaging with the schools, parents and families informally for a number of months.

SPORTS CENTRE ALL SET TO OPEN 29m gym and track in school

May 31, 2013

The state-of-the-art facilities at Eastwood High Sports Centre will be available for the whole community to use.
It opens on Monday 24 June to replace the old Eastwood High School Games Hall. The sports centre and the school have been completely rebuilt at a combined cost of 28.9million. CAMPAIGN: Mary Barbour

New turbine is launched

The 5million turbine at Cathkin Braes is a joint venture between Glasgow City Council and power firm SSE.
It is expected that the turbine will generate 7.3GWh of renewable energy every year enough to power 20% of the citys streetlighting. It will cut Glasgows carbon emissions by 900 tonnes every year. The launch of the turbine is seen as an important early milestone in generating a clean energy supply for the city and a key project in securing a green legacy from the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. The project also forms part of the citys bid to be named European Green Capital in 2015. Bid champion Bailie Liz Cameron said: This project is a perfect example of the kind of partnership that is at the heart of our bid to be European Green Capital in 2015. To

exploiting the citys established strengths in world-class engineering and education to help build a low carbon economy. It is essential that environmental improvements also deliver economic and social improvements, so that all Glaswegians can benefit. That is why we are ensuring our partnerships create jobs and deliver real value back to council taxpayers and to local communities. Calum Wilson, SSEs Director of Development in Scotland, said: We are delighted that the construction and commissioning of the turbine at Cathkin Braes is now complete. The turbine at Cathkin is a new landmark for the city and we look forward to it taking centre stage at the mountain bike competition of the 2014 Commonwealth Games. The 3Megawatt Vestas turbine took 18 weeks to construct and now supplies power to the National Grid. Its hub sits 80 metres above the ground at Cathkin Braes, with a rotor diameter of 90 metres. At the highest point in their turn, the tips of the blades reach 125 metres.

A MOTION calling for support for the campaign to have a statue erected in memory of Mary Barbour was backed at a meeting of Glasgow City Council in May. It was proposed by Councillor Pauline McKeever and seconded by her colleague Fariha Thomas. This followed the launch of the Mary Barbour Commemoration Group in honour of the organiser of the 1915 Rent Strikes in Glasgow. that led to the UK Rent Restriction Act. In addition Labour MSP Anne McTaggart put forward a motion in the Scottish Parliament in memory of the Govan-based campaigner. SOUTHSIDE But rain cant dampen

spirits at big weekend
The drizzle started soon after the joyous opening parade had begun to make its way from Shawlands towards Govanhill.

SouthSide Press and Govan Press

THEY came, they saw, they got drenched. That, sadly, was the dismal tale of this years Southside Festival.

PLAYING ON: St Francis Pipe Band from the Gorbals led Southside Festival procession

And by the time the drummers, dancers, musicians and marchers had reached Queens Park Recreation Grounds, the rain was steady and demoralising. The procession included local children in fancy dress, St Francis Pipe Band from Gorbals, Urban Roots, a Hare Krishna group and old buses and fire engines. Defiant local councillor Archie Graham declared the sixth annual Southside Festival officially open and declared: It takes more than a few drops of rain to stop us. Were Glaswegians, we just get on with it. For a short while afterwards the performers did indeed get on with it. Young singers and actors from Theatre Ecole entertained the crowd who included Deputy

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon with a selection of songs. But then the heavens really did open. And as the downpour then became a deluge, the gallant few who stayed behind retreated to the comfort of the Beer Tent. The football pitch area in front of the main stage became a lake as the day ended in deep disappointment and frustration. Better was to come the next day as thousands came out to enjoy a

Picnic in the Park, performances by musicians and fairground rides for the children. With the rain staying off there was also the chance to wander along and see the displays of local groups and organisations in the tented area. The main stage was still surrounded by a sea of mud but that did not stop music fans crowding around to cheer and dance along to the music of former Squeeze star Glenn Tilbrook. Skababs and Bombskare also had festivalgoers bopping along as the weekend happily finished with smiles all round. Afterwards music co-ordinator Tam Balloch preferred to look on the bright side. He said: The heavy rain on Saturday caused some flooding and, with so many wires around, that could have been dangerous, so we had to take precaustions. But it also gave us a laugh at times, with plastic sharks and other stuff flying around backstage. Even with the wind and rain the stage crew and bands and all

WET-STIVAL
ON SONG: Young stars from Theatre Ecole in Queens Park perform at the Festival
the participants had a good time. Sunday was fantastic and the sun came out during Glenn Tilbrooks set on the main stage. Festival organisers admitted the poor weather had slashed the number of visitors to the event. Last year bright sunshine had encouraged more than 25,000 to attend on the Saturday alone. But this time round fewer than 2,000 had braved the torrential rain on the Saturday while around 5,000 visited the Queens Park Recs the following day. Southside Festival chairman Andrew Montgomery said: The one thing we couldnt control was the weather. But everyone took it in great spirits. While we were disappointed by the turnout its understandable that parents dont want to take their children to the park when its pouring with rain. But weather apart, it went great. Our volunteers can be very proud of putting on a great festival. Andrew admitted organisers may now have to look for extra funding in order to put on next years festival. He explained: Weve paid all our bills for this year but dont have a capital cushion to put towards the 2014 festival. So we will have to look at new revenue streams. Were considering requesting funding from Glasgow City Council. We are proud of the fact were a free event with very low prices for activities. Meanwhile the Southside Festival Fringe was voted a runaway success after dozens of gigs and performances in venues all over Shawlands, Battlefield, Queens Park and Strathbungo. Organisers promise next years event will be bigger and better.

Association, and Community Enforcement Officers Susan Pickhall and Kyrsten Jack. They were able to inform those present of interim plans for police and fire services and get feedback from local residents. Councillor James Coleman, Chair of the Safe Glasgow Group, said: The new legislation has transformed the way the police and fire services are delivered across the whole of Scotland. And how these vital services are scrutinised and reviewed on behalf of the public has also undergone a huge change and we have to make people aware of how this affects them. But the new arrangements are a two-way street, so these events provide a chance for people to voice their concerns so that police and fire services are aware of the needs of local communities. SUPPER IDEA TO HELP HOSPITAL Fish & chips to be sold for 1

By GRACE GALLAGHER
restaurant. New owner Raj said: I did the same thing at my first fish and chip shop, Napoletanos in Paisley. We sold fish suppers and other types of suppers for 1, and the local people queued out of the door to get the chance of buying one. More than 2,000 was raised for the Sick Childrens Hospital. But he is optimistic he could even DOUBLE that amount next week. Raj told The Press: Customers and staff of Napoletanas did very well to raise over 2,000 but I feel we could beat that at Pizza Marios. Its a bigger restaurant with lots of passing trade on Paisley Road West. Weve put up a couple of huge banners outside Pizza Marios and everyone is very positive about it. We reckon we could make about 4,000 on the day, which would be a tremendous effort. And Id like to point out that our staff will be working for nothing on the day as they have agreed to donate their wages to the appeal. The 4,000-plus fish suppers will be cooked on a new state-of-the-art range which Raj and his wife Amin recently installed at Pizza Marios. They stress that they only use the best possible fish, sausages, potatoes and so on. Raj added: Our reputation is for cooking great meals. Already weve had several great testimonials from delighted customers but we are always looking for ways to improve what we do. At the hub of the operation in Crookston Road are manager Freddy Fox and pizza chef Joanna Iwona. Both will be working for nothing on the big day, June 7. Meanwhile, Pizza Mario lives up to its name by serving up delicious pizzas and pasta dishes too. At present it has a special deal of a special 7in pizza with two toppings and chips for only 5.25. Thats 4.25 more than everyone will pay next Wednesday, June 5. Raj added: I spent some time in Yorkhill Hospital as a child so I am always keen to help its charity side. So Id love everyone to come along next Wednesday and eat some great food for a wonderful cause.

The busy takeaway outlet has been a distinctive landmark for many years for everyone in the Cardonald and Crookston areas. But recently Pizza Mario underwent a change of ownership, with Raj Singh taking over. And he soon decided that the best way to get local people to pop in and sample the quality of his food was to stage a special event in aid of charity. The end result is that next Wednesday, June 5, from 11am to 11pm, all suppers cooked fresh at Pizza Mario will be sold for only 1. Every penny of that will go to the Yorkhill Childrens Charity. Organisers believe they can raise more than 4,000 from the day, which will start at 11am and end at 11pm. Buy they are advising local people to expect queues outside the takeaway

Thats what an estimated 4,000 Southsiders will do next Wednesday at Pizza Mario on Crookston Road, at the Paisley Road West junction.

IT has to be the most delicious way to raise money for charity eating a fresh fish supper.

inches, improve their muscle tone, flexibility and circulation which is why we use one of the best Vibration Machines on the market. Fitness Centre also offers non-surgical liposuction which also removes cellulite. The ultrasonic cavitation procedure works by creating a strong vibration that fat cell membranes cannot withstand. The fat cell then explodes into liquid content which then leaves the body through the normal channels of the bodys metabolism. As it is a non-surgical procedure there is no need for anaesthetic or time off work, and FAB ABS say it is an excellent way to remove fat that is difficult to shift through diet or exercise. Its the first anniversary of offering this treatment within the premises and due to the success of it and high client demand we have recently obtained

Best discovery ever! Does exactly what is says on the tin! Now he is heading North to help The Bruce Hotel celebrate its relaunch with a huge party. Mark will be appearing at the new-look hotels Sky Lounge and Club on June 22. He is expected to play a DJ set and hold a meetand-greet and photo session. Its yet another sign that The Bruce is returning to its old glory days after being taken over by, fittingly, Halcyon Hotels. It has seen massive changes in recent weeks, with new looks and new names for its nightclub and restaurant, now called Guys. Managing Director Douglas Douglas is determined to bring back the good times. The transformation has been a labour of love for Douglas, all of 43 years after he began his working life at The Bruce Hotel

Cycle kids in plea to drivers: Give us room

The stars of the Riderz stunt team called into Crookfur and Mearns schools to put on a show for around 1,000 children.
Their tricks and flying feats were aimed at encouraging the youngsters to improve their own skills on two wheels. The new Give Me Cycle Space campaign is reminding drivers to look out for children cycling to school. Its the fourth year East Renfrewshire Council has joined the Cycling Scotland project, with schools in the Newton Mearns area the focus this year. Mearns, Crookfur, St Cadocs and Kirkhill primaries are all taking part and working towards Cycling Scotlands Cycle Friendly Schools award status. They are also taking part in Bikeability cycle training, with St Cadocs and Crookfur training on-the-road for the first time. This programme is designed to give children the road skills required to make independent journeys. Training takes place on

Pupils bags are packed for Africa

BIG-HEARTED pupils at Woodfarm High School are helping poor children in Africa who have been affected by war, poverty and famine. The S3 students filled almost 60 backpacks with educational materials that will be sent to Malawi and Liberia. They also raised 500 that will be donated to Marys Meals. The same charity will also be one of the good causes to benefit from a Summer Fete that will be held next weekend at Woodfarm High School. Pupils, staff and parents are organising the event, to be held on school grounds on Saturday, June 8, from 2 to 4pm. Among the attractions will be live music, dance acts, crazy golf, inflatables, come-and-try judo and fencing and the everpopular Dunk the Teacher. All funds raised from the fete will be split between a number of good causes. Apart from Marys Meals, the charitiesSave the Children and the Teenage Cancer Trust will also benefit. Proceeds will also go towards helping fund a major expedition that Woodfarm High School is organising to Sri Lanka. The fete is at the school in Robslee Road, Thornliebank, on Saturday, June 8, from 2 to 4pm. Tickets are available from the school. For more information call 0141 577 2400.

KIND KIDS: Woodfarm Highs pupils with backpacks

PRIMARY school pupils were treated to a stunning display of bike riding as part of the nationwide Give Me Cycle Space campaign.

HIGH FLYER: Pupils look on as a stunt cyclist jumps over a high bar at Crookfur roads in a real traffic environment, rather than in the playground. Banners have been put up on lampposts on routes to schools to reinforce the message to drivers. The Newton Mearns schools are the latest to get involved in safe cycling in East Renfrewshire eight schools have already been awarded Cycle Friendly School status and 10 primaries delivered the Bikeability Scotland on-road training in 2012. The Riderz team took time to chat to pupils about cycling and why its the best way to get to and from school. They also passed on safety tips. Council roads convener Tony Buchanan said: I am always pleased to see youngsters cycling to and from school or to our parks and sports centres. But they should feel safe on their bikes. Wearing protective helmets and bright clothing and reflectors can obviously help but we must remind drivers to give cyclists plenty of room when they pass them on the road.

Residents are being asked to report issues which blight communities and put lives at risk. They include: l late night parties l vandalism l street drinking l drug dealing l dog fouling l fire-raising l blocked fire exits. The campaign is the latest phase of a partnership between GHA, Police Scotland and Scottish Fire and Rescue Service known as the Community Improvement Partnership which was rolled out last year. Now we are asking people in our areas to help us make their neighbourhoods even better. People shouldnt have to suffer in silence or put up with antisocial behaviour. Let us know and we can help. The Community Improvement Partnership has already resulted in 15 police officers and a station manager from the fire service being seconded to GHA to work side-by-side with housing staff on tackling crime and anti-social behaviour. Roseanna Cunningham, the Minister for Community Safety

The Scottish Government is fully supportive of initiatives that tackle crime and improve safety, such as the Community Improvement Partnership. It is already working well in areas across Glasgow and the results offer great reassurance to people across the city. The Safe and Sound campaign will build on the good work already done by GHA, police and fire and rescue services. And I will be following the campaign with interest. Nick and Gavin Glad to be back

TWO singer-songwriters with links to genuine music legends are playing a surprise gig in the South Side next week. The Glad Cafe in Shawlands will host Nick Harper and Gavin Moore on Friday, June 7, after a concert they were due to play in the Borders was cancelled. Nick is the son of the great Roy Harper, who featured in the title of a Led Zeppelin track and sang on a Pink Floyd album. The talented guitarist recently performed at the 2013 Southside Festival and, in fact, arrived two days early to help the organisers build the stages. Nick has recorded nine studio albums, one live album and a documentary DVD. And he has performed record-breaking gigs at Everest Base Camp and top of Kilimanjaro on behalf of cancer charity Love Hope Strength. His special guest at the Glad Cafe will be Gavin, who is the nephew of two Irish music icons, Christy Moore and Luka Bloom. With a soulful, emotive voice, Gavins songs have folkrock and Irish influence. Joining Nick and Gavin on the bill will be Tragic OHara, a well-known singer-songwriter on the Glasgow music scene. Their Glad Cafe gig on June 7 starts at 8pm. Tickets (10) are available at the venue or by phoning 636 6119.

IF youre looking for a great night out there are quite a few options on, or next to, Paisley Road West. Only yards from the start of the famous road is the famous Grand Ole Opry, one of the citys most unique and entertaining venues. The spacious club hosts a wide range of acts, from Country and Western to Showband and Rock. But one thing guaranteed is lots of fun and a warm welcome. One gig that is sure to attract fans of no-nonsense rock n roll is The Springsteen Sessions, who are at the Opry on July 3 just two weeks after their hero Bruce Springsteen is due to perform at Hampden Park. HOUSE ABOUT THAT: Duncan hands prize voucher to three of our winners

MECCA Glasgow Quay is now Scotlands most exciting bingo club, with millions of pounds worth of prizes won each year. The spacious modern complex is in Springfield Quay, a short walk from Paisley Road Toll. With free parking, a licensed bar and delicious food cooked and served on the premises, it is an ideal spot for a fun night out. And that is exactly what four lucky Press readers got when they won our recent contest. Mecca Glasgow Quay General Manager Duncan Anderson gave the lucky women their bingo

books before they enjoyed a meal for four washed down with wine. Five lucky winners were also celebrating recently when they scooped cheques for 10,000 each at Mecca Bingos Firecracker Scottish Spectacular. The minimum prize for a Full House on the night was 1,000. And the total prize fund for the event in the Southside club was an astonishing 100,000. It was the second time in a year that Mecca Glasgow Quay had staged the Firecracker night,

Now its owners, brothers Harry and Jasy Singh, have exported their winning formula to the city centre.

FOR many years the Punjabi restaurant on Paisley Road West has been a haven for lovers of great Indian food at Southside prices.

PUNJABI IS TWO GOOD TO MISS

SIZZLING: Both Punjabi restaurants serve great curries
impressive 5.5 out of 6. Close to perfection, in other words. Just like the incredible food served up by the Singh family in both Ibrox and the city centre. Both restaurants maintain the same high standards of culinary excellence. The one difference is that Punjabi Charing Cross has a slightly more exotic menu. For many years its namesake on Paisley Road West has been popular with local residents and a favourite pre-match stop for football supporters. Its Banquet Buffet Nights, served Sunday to Thursday, are fan-tastic value at only 8.95. While specialities like Punjabi Garlic Chilli Chicken are a treat for your tastebuds. Punjabi at Paisley Road West does a roaring carry-out trade. While Punjabi Charing Cross, in the old Mitchells bar just over the Kingston Bridge, is roomy and superbly furnished. Punjabi Charing Cross has a licensed function suite that can be hired for free. Both Punjabi restaurants also provide a buffet and outside catering service.

which includes entertainment and attracts around 1,000 players to the Southside bingo hall, which has roomy, comfortable seating and electronic playing screens. Mr Anderson said: We were the first bingo club in Britain to stage an event like this. We are always looking for ways to make the experience of coming to this club more exciting for our members. For more details about playing bingo at Mecca Glasgow Quay, phone the club on 0141 418 0106 or log on to the website www. meccabingo.com.

Punjabi Charing Cross is a short walk from the nightspots in Sauchiehall Street. In a short time it has proved just as popular with tourists and revellers as the original Punjabi at Ibrox which is still serving up the delicious fayre that won it legions of followers. But the new restaurant on North Street, next to the Mitchell Library, has been given dozens of rave reviews on the respected TripAdvisor website, all posted by satisfied diners. Punjabi Charing Cross is in the Top 20 of Glasgows 1,020 restaurants. Of the 51 reviews many posted by visitors to the city it is rated as Excellent or Very Good by 49 diners. While on JustEat, it is rated an

FISH SUPPERS CAN BE HEALTHY OPTION Give yourself a shake at the Criterion
The busy takeaway on Paisley Road West has long been renowned for the quality of its famous fish suppers.

Focus on Paisley Road West . . . the South Sides longest road

THE popular Criterion chip shop in Cardonald is keeping its customers well fed and healthy.

But now the staff are letting regulars know that, contrary to what some think, their signature dish is actually better for us than most of its fast-food rivals. Research from the Seafish Industry body shows that fish and chips has a lot less fat than a pizza, burger with fries or, worst of all, a donner kebab. Everyones favourite supper also weighs in with 595 calories while a pizza has 871, burger and medium fries has 888 and a donner kebab has 942 calories. The Criterions co-owner Stef Mazzoncini said: This is

good news for us, as I have always said that a fish supper is a nutritious meal. Now the takeaway has added another healthy product to its menu milkshakes. These are available from only 99p in strawberry, banana and chocolate flavour. Or for 1.40 the Criterions new milkshake machine (left) can create a sumptuous version using only whipped cream, with Sprinkles added for free. An ideal way for youngsters to increase the calcium in their diets and build stronger bones. The Criterion was recently awarded a certificate by the council to mark its high level of cleanliness and hygiene. This came after it passed an inspection from Glasgow City Council officials using a Food Standards Agency checklist. Stef said: Maintaining the

highest possible standards of hygiene and cleanliness has always been an important part of the Criterion philosophy. It is extra peace of mind for our customers. The Criterion makes the best fresh home-baked Italian pizzas in the South Side. Plus the most delicious Scottish crispy haddock and chips which attract customers from all over the city and beyond. The same family has been serving customers on Paisley Road West since 1925. They said: The people of Cardonald want quality and value. Something cheaper but of inferior quality wont do. We would never compromise our reputation and name by letting down the customers whom we have had the pleasure and privilege of serving for generations.

Teenage star flies off to France

The selection is reward for an outstanding season during which James established himself as a cornerstone of the GHA pack, playing in 20 of the clubs 22 league and cup fixtures.
The 18-year-old Southsider is joined in the squad by another GHA product, winger Rory Hughes, who is also part of the Scotland 7s squad. Their first game is against Argentina in Nantes on June 5. Meanwhile, GHAs annual Braidholm 7s tournament served up another exciting afternoon of rugby for the crowd who turned out in the warm sunshine. And the home side clinched the trophy to round off a superb season, highlight of which came last month when GHA secured the RBS Championship Division A title with a thumping win in the mud at local rivals Cartha Queens Park. In the Braidholm 7s, GHA defeated Glasgow Uni-based side the Yellow Bellied Lizards in the semis, surviving a precarious situation where they were down to five men, having lost two players to the sin bin in the same incident. In the other semi, Minerva Builders beat French side Orsay, who had shown a mixture of Latin flair and brawn. That meant GHA met Minerva in a repeat of last years final, which the visiting Builders had won. In a highly entertaining final, Minerva scored first with a try to Peter Jericevich from the first kick off. This time round Minerva fielded a mix of Ayr and Glasgow Hawks stars. GHA, meanwhile, had lost centre Ross McClymont to a pulled a hamstring in the

GREAT SEASON: GHA won Division A and their own Braidholm 7s

semi final, after young winger Andrew Spowart had suffered the same fate in the first round. The home side recruited the services of Orsay playmaker Romain Lombard for the final and this proved a shrewd acquisition as the young Frenchmen put in a mercurial performance. In a highly entertaining final, Minerva scored first with a try to Peter Jericevich from the kick-off. French guest Lombard then replied with a contender for try of the tournament a dummy through the legs, a shimmy through a gap, pirouette and final sidestep to take him in under the posts. GHA scored a second when winger Rangi Jericevich kicked a grubber up the wing then hacked on again and beat the cover defence to the touchdown. Hefin OHare then scored another try to give GHA the half time lead. And the home side scored early in the second period when Alan Auld finished off a foray from Grant MacDonald up the left-hand touchline. GHA grabbed a fifth try when Rangi Jericevich finished off an Alan Auld break. Minerva hit back with two scores from forward Grant Strang but the home defence killed off the comeback. That gave battling GHA a 33-19 win and a measure of revenge for last year. EXTRA funding of 93,000 has been approved by East Renfrewshire Council for the new synthetic, all weather football pitch at Eastwood Park, Giffnock. Since 2009 the council has been working with Giffnock Soccer Centre to deliver a pitch within the park. The new funding will help meet the additional costs of relocating the pitch from the former tree nursery site to its proposed location between St Ninians High and Eastwood House.
