3.2.2 SoIar Array Sizing and SeIection
The solar array can be sized and selected based on the following calculation of the electrical
load. f the load has been calculated manually the solar array can be chosen from the
manufacturer's literature or, alternatively, the commercial solar sizing packages usually
provide array recommendations. The following factors must be considered when sizing and
selecting the appropriate array. These factors are based on Cooper Basin experience and
conditions and must be modified for installations in other areas.

Factor Recommendation Notes
Sun hours per day
(Lowest number of
sun hours per day)
This should be for the worst month
of the year. E.g. For Moomba, SA,
the worst month is June where
PSH = 4.65.
This information is available from
the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM)
or from solar panel manufacturers
for other regions.
Number of days
required to recharge
battery from
maximum depth of
discharge
To be determined per application This will affect the number of solar
panels required
Optimum panel angle The panel is to face North. The tilt
angle may be fixed at 45 for the
Cooper Basin or may be varied to
suit alternative latitudes and/or
seasonal variations in the load.
This angle is a compromise
between the optimum summer and
winter angles. nformation is
available from BOM or solar panel
manufacturers for other regions.
Panel Voltage 12V or 24V DC Selected to suit the requirements
of the solar regulator and the main
load devices i.e. to minimise the
need for voltage converters.
Panel Type Crystalline silicon PV modules
shall comply with EC 61215. Thin
film PV modules shall comply with
EC 61646.
Tedlar back plate, EVA
encapsulate, tempered glass front,
anodized aluminium alloy frame.
Refer to Santos specification
1515-60-S003 for preferred
vendors and models commonly
used in the Cooper Basin.
Panel Quantity and
Dimensions
Chosen to best suit the physical
constraints of the application e.g.
wind loads, mobile installations,
single post stands etc
The panels in any single
installation should all be of the
same type. The smallest number
of large panels is usually the best
combination.
Options Electrical connection terminals in a
weatherproof junction box
Panels should have protected
terminals (not cable tails) for the
connection of the power and signal
cables.
