At the Kapangian Elementary School, the fourth biggest elementary school of Tacloban, school principal David Alcober said that they have now 2,125 enrolment which was higher compare to their previous enrolment of 2,006. He also lamented that the school need 10 new classrooms out of its present 43 classrooms to accommodate the increasing number of students of the school. Much as we want to have new classroom buildings here in our school, we cannot do that due to lack of space, Alcober said. us, classes in certain levels are being done in shi s due to lack of classrooms. Alcober said that classrooms used for Grade I, for example, are also being used for kindergarten classes. While the school is su ering from shortage on classrooms, teachers needs is not a problem, the school principal said. At present, the school has 47 teachers and additional four more, he said. Meantime, members of the 19th Infantry Battalion joined the opening of classes yesterday. In particular, they joined in the saying of the national pledge at the Leyte National High School. Aside from securing them, we want also to prevent the occurrence of any untoward incidents in nearby areas. Uniformed policemen will conduct mobile and foot patrol along tra c routes leading to di erent institutions of learning and within the immediate vicinity of school premises, aside from assisting the tra c enforcement groups to help smoothen the ow of tra c. PRO8 has prepared security plans to ensure that crimes usually committed during the opening of classes will be minimized, if not totally eradicated, Soria assured. Aside from ensuring peace and order, police personnel manning the PADs would also coordinate with school o cials in handling and guiding the anticipated surge of students and pupils and ensure the smooth resumption of classes. Flyers on safety and crime prevention tips have been distributed to parents and students during the enrolment period the past two weeks, Soria said. Notwithstanding the security preparations, Soria advised the public, especially parents and students, to remain vigilant and observe precautionary measures to avoid being victims of petty crimes, like the , pick pocketing and snatching. Acidre breaks his silence on resignation issue

TACLOBAN CITY Describing himself as jobless and disappointed, former An Waray partylist regional chairman Jude Acidre finally broke his silence on the resignation issue. He dismissed rumors that he was pressured by the party to resign, but he said that the very limited option and very limited time prompted him to give up the congressional post. Acidre resigned from the An Waray on May 21, two days before the proclamation of An Waray as among the winners in this years midterm polls. It was a very difficult decision, I was hurt, and I was angry and feel betrayed because the leadership would have thought of other options to help, said Acidre, who served as one of the party-lists pillars for nine years and the number two nominee of the An Waray in the partylist election last May 13, 2013. The University of the Philippines political science graduate said that resigning was the most honorable thing to do since hes not anymore capable to serve the party given the very limited time and support extended. Who doesnt want to be a congressman? You can get to help a lot of people. But being in the party-list, there are a lot of decisions to be considered, Acidre told Leyte Samar Daily Express. I have to do what needs to be done. I have to be true to myself although my family and I feel regrets. For those who expressed their support and confidence to his leadership, whom he considered as a source of his strength, Acidre asked them to demand it from incoming leaders of the party to deliver the services to the Waray-Warays since they have the resources. After the defeat of outgoing An Waray Rep. Florencio Bem Noel in Taclobans mayoralty race, the party-list has been embroiled in this controversy when Acidre tendered his resignation for personal reasons. Acidre said that Rep. Noel has nothing to do with his move since the solon had not been active in the party since the campaign period kickoff. Rep. Neil Benedict Montejo said Acidres resignation surprised him but they respect his decision. We accept his decision with a heavy heart, but I can assure you there was no pressure for Acidre to resign, Montejo said in a May 31 interview. An Waray got two seats in the Lower House with 540,906 votes last midterm elections although their total votes is 200,000 less than what they garnered in the 2010 polls.

This is in response to the clamor for bigger homes. We expect to sell all units within one month after the launching, said Geraldine Gascon-Garcia, Camella Leyte general manager. An adjacent three-hectare property was acquired in 2011 to bring the total project area to 12 hectares. This good performance has sent signals that families in the region crave for bigger homes with unique amenities, Garcia said. Camella is also developing housing projects in Barangay Arado in Palo, Leyte and in Barangay Tambulilid in Ormoc City. Theres also a plan to expand to Calbayog City in Samar this year. The 6.3-hectare Camella Palo is located along the national road connecting this city and Ormoc. The developer is targeting to construct 500 low-cost houses in two years. Camella Ormoc, on the other hand, has a target of 300 units. Camella is a subsidiary of the Villar-led Vista Land & Lifescapes, Inc. (SQM)

Territorial disputes
Defense Treaty with the US) as this declining superpower has to maintain a neutral stance in relation to China, its biggest creditor. Bringing the issue to the UN is seemingly futile the fact that China is a very prominent and inuential member of its inner circle. The issue is bound to go nowhere and will not make any headway even in that highest body. Since it cannot ght militarily against this superior opponent, the Philippines is left with no option but to drop its claims to almost all marine resources at West Philippine Sea, which China greedily claims almost up to our coastlines. Smaller claimant countries are of no match against Chinas military might, thats why armed confrontation should be ruled out. China should just act responsibly and set a good example by respecting the international law on territorial waters, which it approved together with other countries years ago. Anyway, in our case, we are just claiming those that belong to our territories based on that law.

mid the series of failures in trying to settle the territorial dispute between the Philippines and Chinarst within the local level, then at the ASEAN summit the case has been nally elevated to the United Nations to have it decided by the international law on territorial waters. This is not a mutual move between the two countries, though. Only the Philippines is lobbying for that manner of settlement, which is based on international laws, at the UN. China remains rm on its stand: to settle the matter the China way, which is, for other claimants of the Spratly Islands like the Philippines to abandon their claims in its favor. Aside from this, no other options seem to be acceptable to this greedy giant. Not willing to abandon its territorial claims within the two-hundred nautical mile zone from its shoreline, the Philippines has nowhere else to turn to but to the United Nations. It cannot also rely on the United States for help (though the country enjoys a Mutual

Championing the poor

Based on the infomercials recently seen and heard over all media outlets, the political battle in the country hinges on winning the hand of the poor, achieved most effectively by whoever could closely identify with this biggest sector in society. This required, on the part of politicians, not just a brush with poverty, but a genuine life experience that wallowed in its mud. This has become the campaign slogan of many a candidate. They claimed to be for the poor, that they came from a poor family, that they love the poor, that the poor is neglected, etc. These candidates of course were just taking advantage of the poors says he is poor is also at the same time equipped with campaign money to dangle with the politicians joining his fold. Such candidate can hire the best publicists and advertisers. He can pay the best minds in the business. And it sure pays off. Survey after survey he may lead. But how could such candidate retrieve his expense in trying to make himself fragrant to the poor? After winning the election, these kinds of candidates will be busy paying back their benefactors. And thats where governance will fail again. Thats where we are going back to square one. Well, getting the poor out of their rut is not as sim-

misery, appealing to the latters emotions by promising everything. Majority of our voters are poor so it is just natural for them to be wooed, sweet talked to, and pampered to get their nods. This kind of lavish attention to the poor, though, is good only during election time. Such a campaign strategy has been effectively used by many candidates, but once in power, they forget everything about the poor.

They accumulate wealth in a frenzied fashion, while the poor they promised to help remain poor. We have glaring examples of such politicians riding on the poor. While they are professing themselves to be champions of the poor, politicians aspiring for lower posts ock to their camps like ants knowing that they are nancially well endowed. A candidate who

with the Corpus Christi. So sublime, so transformational that a serious parishioner would agree and reconsider. Now, I got what I wanted: I, the cheated and indignant became the winner, because he enthused me literally from a distant pew. To Father RM, do not sulk, after your comprehensive examinations, you may proceed and with Gods grace, our paths may cross. Indeed, at some point I want to reect how my undistinguished run of the mill routines and all its processes attain surreality through little miracles. Ambet, the envoy was instrumental in my effort to discern the blissful effects of the Saturday Neo Eucharist of Father Gil as well as the Sundays Eucharist of Father Ric. Thank you for a very holy weekend. en, we also have many people who are in varying degrees of ignorance, confusion, error and in varying situations of pressure and harassment. Not wellgrounded on their faith, let alone in their spiritual life, they are vulnerable to the machinery-driven scare campaign. Even the UN is hell-bent to convince everyone about global warming, in spite of serious misgivings also from serious scientists who disagree with this fuss about global warming and overpopulation. I was amused to learn that UN o cials are now planning to launch a shock treatment approach to the skeptics of global warming. I thought it is supposed to hear all sides of an issue. It just cannot go on with a certain position if the reservations of the other side are not adequately resolved. e funnier recent development is the attempt to link population with global warming and poverty. Again? is is a rehashed Malthusian scare, long ago debunked but now resurrected, riding on the current intrigue provoked by the global warming issue.. I notice that this overpopulation scare and myth gets a life whenever some issue that manages to catch world attention erupts. Poor parasite! It can not stand on its own merits. It has to use other issues as its crutch. e problem with the overpopulation people is that they reduce the issue into a matter of numbers alone, and their remedies are formed strictly along the lines of what is practical, but not moral. All these cases of alarmism only re ect the state Ziklag a historical place mentioned in the Old Testament of the Holy Scriptures of Christians. Personally, I admit that I have not thoroughly scoured through the pages of the Bible because this is the rst time that I have come across this name. Those who have watched the Kerygma TV program last Sunday (June 2), however, must now be familiar with the word Ziklag. Renowned motivational speaker and pastor Bo Sanchez spoke about Ziklag repeatedly in one of the prayer and worship services he led, which was aired through Kerygma TN last Sunday. He informed that Ziklag was a place where extreme events happened. It was a place where boys

ple as it is portrayed to be. It involves policy decisions that affect them. A candidate who is beholden to a privileged few can not accommodate the needs of the poor. He has to pay back to his nanciers, and his term is not even enough to do it. That is why politicians who promise and spend so much for the poor during campaign periods often fail. Voters should learn the lessons of the past. Those who are trying to represent them, and identify with them, oftentimes fail them. Its time the people elected someone who does not promise much but will do his part silently and effectively in trying to address the sad plight of the have-nots. of non-faith in the world. eres exaggerated reliance on the human sciences and technologies, on ideologies and other strictly human and material means. e inputs of faith like prayer, sacri ce, virtues, sacraments, etc., are ignored, as if these have no place in any decent discussion of problems and issues among us. We may already be knocking at the doors of the ultra-modern world insofar as the human sciences and technologies are concerned. But with regard to faith, I think we are still in the stone age, an anomaly that cries to heaven for correction. De nitely, an evangelization attuned to this predicament is a must. We have to nd ways to show the linkages and connections between faith and our most modern developments.. ere are such ways. We just have to use them!

Alarmism is Godless apocalypse

Waves and waves of alarming news are now bombarded on us. Global warming is leading our planet to a meltdown. Increasing population is primary cause of global warming and world poverty. We are running out of energy, running out of water, running out of land, of this and of that, etc. is seems to be todays version of the apocalypse. It attempts to disclose a massive future disaster if nothing is done in the mold of a worldly, that is, Godless vision. Its not a divine revelation, but a so-called scienti c revelation. Its now engaged in Goebbels-like propaganda of inconvenient truths. e funny thing is many people are actually buying these pieces. And they come from all places-the rich and the poor, the educated and the ignorant, the sophisticated and the simple, the whites, the blacks and the in-betweens, etc. Still, we can nd a few who have held on-not so much to mere facts and data as to beliefs backed up also by scienti c evidenceparrying the persistent blows and shellings from powerful men and groups.

ey can be called remnant, the few who remain faithful to Gods word even if immersed in worldly knowledge. ey have called this phenomenon as alarmism. It is exaggerating and pu ing things up with the intention of scaring people and herding them to a corral of pre-meditated options that usually take away the crucial faith and moral element. Of course, the phenomenon thrives because of a synergy of favorable factors, a perfect storm of sorts. With our technological and scienti c progress, we can now know a lot about the material and temporal aspects of our world. Its now easy to come up with a plethora of data to support any idea at all. us, ideological groups of all colors can go a long way in pursuing their agenda. ey have perfected the art of propaganda, and so you see and hear them almost everywhere. e spiritual and supernatural tone of peoples thoughts, let alone, society is systematically eliminated. ings are kept in the strictly material or earthly level. were buried and where kings were enthroned. Academically speaking, Ziklag is the Biblical name of a town that was located in the Negev region in the south of what was the Kingdom of Judah. An online site describes Ziklag as the place in the possession of the Philistines when David ed to Gath from Ziph with all his followers. Achish, the king, assigned him Ziklag as his place of residence. There he dwelt for over a year and four months. From this time it pertained to the kings of Judah. During his absence with his army to join the Philistine expedition against the Israelites, it was destroyed by the Amalekites, whom David, however, pursued and utterly routed, returning all the captives. Two days after his return from this expedition, David received tidings of the disastrous battle of Gilboa and of the death of Saul (Book of Samuel). (biblestudytools.com) There are other spiritual writers who give varied nomenclature to the name Ziklag. One says fortress, others winding road and still some others a place of great distress and loss, such as spiritual Ziklag. By analogy, Ziklag is a condition in a mans life where he could shape his state of being. As Sanchez expounded, it is a place where, if one is made of wood, he is burned to death; but if he is of gold, he is puried. Although truly a real

geographical site, Ziklag is also likened into a situation where one could make or break his true humanity. In Davids story, as Sanchez narrated, when he learned that Ziklag was under siege, sought the help of God. Angered, God commanded David to rally his men and rise up against the Amalekites and set their captives free. Challenged by Gods fury, David took upon himself Gods tall order and pursued the enemies until Ziklag and all the bounties there in were restored to David and his people. Sanchez topic was actually about encouraging oneself in the face of the surprising challenges in life. Self-initiative and self-motivation as psychologists code these factors, encouraging oneself, according to Sanchez, means he does not need to wait for someone else to push him to rise above the trials and adversities in life, especially with God by his side. And one day, God will restore by His grace everything that was lost to this victorious man and later is able to withstand hardships. What about you? Are in in a spiritual Ziklag? Try God. By His grace, He will restore to you even the most precious person or thing forcibly taken from you by another. God, in His son Jesus, has so much mercy, love and compassion to give upon those who call upon Him.

TFCCCI soon to turn over 20 more classrooms to DepEd, LGUs

TACLOBAN CITY With the opening of classes this week, the Tacloban Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce, Inc. (TFCCCI) announces that 20 more classrooms are to be turned over this year to some local government units and the Department of Education (DepEd). In an interview with TFCCCI president Go Tic Ching (Jack Uy), he said that the 20 classrooms, constructed during rst half of the year and end of 2012, will be turned over around July so that these can be used by the students. Ching said that some classrooms have been nished last April, but will be turned over together with the other classrooms being constructed this month. e TFCCCI is under the umbrella organization of the Federation of Filipino-Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (FFCCCII) and for the last 54 years, has been actively partnering with DepEd in its banner advocacy -- the Operation Schools for the Barrio Program. e FFCCCIIs advocacy program is one of the cost-e cient strategy to address the shortage of classrooms across the country said Ching. We ll the gap, where the government cannot provide. Our school building has two classrooms with two-comfort rooms. Our model school building cost P400,000, while the government with almost the same structure costs P800,000 and even up to a million pesos, Ching said. In Southern Leyte province, there are twoschool buildings in Liloan, one-school building in Maasin City SPED Center, Maasin City. In Leyte, oneschool building each, has been constructed in Dulag, Pastrana and Carigara municipalities. Two school buildings were constructed in Calbayog City and another one in Marabut, Samar. All in all there are 20 classrooms that will be turned-over within the year. However, Ching said that the harsh words of President Benigno Aquino III during the 29th biennial convention of FFCC-

CII last March that some members are evading taxes have hurt the federation. President Aquino may have been feed wrong information. We are diligently paying our taxes and also our members. Some members are even top taxpayers in the country. Our socio-economic programs like the school building program might be a ected. We are hoping our big donors of school buildings from FFCCCII will continue this laudable program, because this is really a big help especially in the remote baranggays across the country, Ching said. In the region, the FFCCCII-TFCCCI has already built almost 500 classrooms and around 11,000 in the country. FF-

CCCI is a non-pro t organization with 100-member-chambers nationwide. In the region according to DepEd-8 Assistant Re-
