How can I improve my Writing?

1 Main idea Writing is NOT like talking. Written texts have to be planned, revised, improved and checked before the reader reads them. Usually the reader will be alone with your text, so you won't be able to explain things if they're not clear. A text must be selfexplanatory. 2 The Process of Writing BEFORE WRITING: Ask yourself: what am I going to include in the text? You must plan this before setting pen to paper -at least the most important points, otherwise the text will be chaotic, disorganised. So, always make notes about the content of your texts. Then, put your notes in order and you will have a proper plan for your text and can be sure that it will be well-organised. WHILE YOU WRITE: Of course, follow your plan! Try to express your ideas as clearly as possible (remember you won't be there to clarify things for your reader), don't invent words (use the dictionary!), don't translate expressions literally from your own language. Write in a way that 'sounds English'. Use the language (vocabulary and grammar) that you have just learned from the unit, and, of course, organise your text into different paragraphs: an introduction, a body (main ideas, with examples of what you say to clarify, etc.) and a conclusion. AFTER WRITING: Check your text! Nobody writes a perfect text at the first attempt. Two important concepts: correct (those careless mistakes: grammar, spelling, punctuation, vocabulary) and improve (vocabulary, expressions, ideas, etc.). This will take you to produce your final version of the text, one that you can be proud of. 3 To sum up Never present a text that: * is disorganised, both in its content and 'visually' (not divided into paragraphs) * has basic, 'careless' mistakes (check your writing for mistakes before presenting it to the teacher!) * includes unclear things because this will make your text difficult to read. Always think of your reader. 4 Train yourself to produce good texts , and remember that the only way of improving your writing is practicing, practicing, and practicing, and learning from your own mistakes.
