The event culminated with a grand prize drawing for a Titleist 913D2 Driver, valued at $400. Mike Higgins of C&M Medical Services proudly claimed the prize amidst reluctant applause and gasps of disappointment that others did not hear their name announced.

Sincere thanks go out to the many volunteers who assisted with the months long planning and execution. Crazy for Crawfish!

I enjoy crawfish anyway I can get em. I like crawfish stew, boiled crawfish, crawfish salad, you name it, if its crawfish, I like it! With all the myths surrounding mudbugs, I thought Id explore the nutritional pros and cons of our beloved Louisiana crawfish. Growing up I have fond memories of boiling crawfish in the spring with my family, but it never seemed to fail that the next morning, my rings would be tight and my eyes were puffy. Crawfish themselves are

not high in sodium, but when you boil bugs with lots of seasoning and salt, the sodium can certainly increase fluid retention, especially in your hands, feet and face. Hate it when you feel puffy? Here are a few things you can keep in mind thatll beat the bloat! Dont suck the heads For me, this is easier said than done, but keep in mind this is where most of the juice which is loaded with salt and sodium are. I know its tempting, but if youre prone to bloating, minimize the heads you suck! Drink lots of water This seems counterintuiative but it

works. You can reduce fluid retention by drinking water with your crawfish. The extra water will help make the fluids in your blood less concentrated. This can stimulate your body to release more water and the sodium along with it.1 Exercise If you engage in cardio exercise your body will release extra toxins and fluid through perspiration. Find relief by exercising for a minimum of fifteen minutes.2 Eat potassium rich foods Potassium is an important mineral that helps to balance your bodys sodium and fluid levels.3 You can incorporate sodium by eating foods like bananas, melon, tomatoes, and potatoes. You may even consider drinking a high electrolyte, low sugar exercise drink like Powerade Zero. Now a little about bug benefits! According the American Heart Association, three ounces of crawfish contain about 116 milligrams of cholesterol, which is only about a third of the daily recommended intake.4 Also, crawfish meat is high in protein, (Protein is my favorite food group! Ideal Protein Update

Hey yall. I wanted to give you an update on my weight loss progress. Its been an amazing month, and Im down 13 pounds. Rigth now Im trying to maintian, and Liz at Ideal Protein of Gonzales has helped me to do just that. Im incorporating every day food into my diet, but I like the IP products so much, I still enjoy them on a nearly daily basis. Now, Im ready for summer and will continue to maintain while I workout to create more lean muscle mass.

medical treatment, there is a law creating an order of priority for those allowed to make those decisions for you. The first person authorized by law is the person a court has appointed to be your curator (guardian). If a court has not appointed anyone to act for you, your spouse may consent to your medical treatment if you are married. If you are not married or if your spouse is unavailable, the law allows the following categories of persons to consent to your medical treatment: 1) your adult children; 2) your parents; 3) your siblings; 4) other relatives. If there is more than one person in a category, a majority vote of the people in the category must agree. This could cause problems if your loved ones cannot agree on what treatment is in your best interest. Additionally, the person you want to make your decisions may not be in the first category. Under Louisiana law, there are documents you can execute to avoid these problems. One of these documents is a healthcare power of attorney. This document allows you to designate an individual to make healthcare decisions if you cannot. In Louisiana, your healthcare power of attorney can be combined with your financial power of attorney as long as the document expressly

gives your agent the right to make healthcare decisions. A better practice is to use separate documents. This is so your healthcare providers wont have to search through pages of financial instructions to discover who has the authority to make healthcare decisions. Also, you may want to choose different people for those roles. Regardless of whether you name your healthcare agent in one or two documents, you should always name a back-up, or successor, healthcare agent in the event the first person is unable or unwilling to serve when the need arises. Louisiana law also authorizes a living will to instruct your healthcare providers regarding the withholding or withdrawal of life-sustaining procedures when you have a terminal or irreversible condition. This document ensures your fundamental right to control your medical care is respected even if you are not able to participate in the decision-making process. Recently, Louisiana has also adopted LaPost. LaPost allows you and your doctor to document the types of treatment you want if your doctor believes you have less than 6 months to live. A HIPAA authorization is another important healthcare document. It authorizes those that you want to access your protected medical records to do so. Without this

document, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) prohibits healthcare providers from disclosing medical information to anyone other than the patient or the person appointed under state law to make healthcare decisions for the patient. Your loved ones may have difficulty getting crucial information from a healthcare provider if you do not grant them access to your records with a HIPAA authorization. As you can see, it is very important to have the proper healthcare documents in place to communicate your wishes to your loved ones and your healthcare providers. National Healthcare Decisions Day is a great reminder of the importance of these documents and a great opportunity for you to make sure you have the documents in place that you might need in a crisis. To ensure you are protected in this regard, you should work with experienced estate planning professionals so that all aspects of your incapacity plan have been considered and your documents comply with Louisiana law when they are needed.

If you are experiencing electrical problems, here are a couple of quick tips for you to use when trying to find the problem.

outlet. Builders generally install one GFI and then wire other outlets through it. Look in these areas for the GFI and be sure the reset button is depressed.

No Power to an Outlet
First try resetting your circuit breaker. If that isn't effective, and a bathroom or kitchen outlet is affected, it could be a tripped GFI. The GFI is a "mini" breaker located inside an outlet within 10 feet of water (ie: a sink). This GFI "button" tends to be red with test/reset noted on it, located directly on the outlet cover. This prevents electrocution by shutting off power immediately if electrical current comes in contact with water. A GFI is most likely located: 1.) In the bathroom. 2.) In the kitchen. 3.) In the garage. 4.) At the circuit breaker panel box. Regardless of where it is located, it is likely that all the kitchen and bathroom circuits are hooked through this 18

Replacing an outlet or switch is actually a very minor repair. With the power turned off to the area, it is not at all dangerous. The parts can be purchased for around $5 and the local hardware store can walk you through the steps to replace. If electrical problems seem more than you are comfortable handling, please call a licensed electrician. As always, ask for proof that they are licensed and insured before allowing them to do work in your home.

PROBLEMS

More than fifteen percent of American adults suffer from chronic facial pain. Some common symptoms include pain in or around the ear, tenderness of the jaw, clicking or popping noises when opening the mouth, or even headaches and neck aches. Two joints and several jaw muscles make it possible to open and close the mouth. They work together when you chew, speak, and swallow. These structures include muscles and ligaments, as well as the jaw bone, the mandible (lower jaw) with two joints, the TMJs (temporomandibular joint). The TM joint is one of the most complex joints in the body. Located on each side of the head, these joints work together and can make many different movements, including a combination of rotating and translocational (gliding) action, used when chewing and speaking. Several muscles help open and close the mouth. They control the lower jaw (mandible) as it moves forward, backward,

and side-to-side. Both TM joints are involved in these movements. Each TM joint has a disc between the ball and socket (see diagram). The disc cushions the load while enabling the jaw to open widely and perform rotating and translocational movements. Any problem that prevents this complex system of muscles, ligaments, discs and bones from working together properly may result in a painful TMJ disorder. Diagnosis & Treatment A dentist can help identify the source of the pain with a thorough exam and appropriate xrays. Often, it's a sinus, toothache or an early stage of periodontal disease. But for some pain, the cause is not so easily diagnosed. The pain could be related to the facial muscles, the jaw or temporomandibular joint, located in the front of the ear. Treatments for this pain may include stress reducing exercises, muscle relaxants, or wearing a mouth protector to prevent teeth grinding. They've been successful for many and your dentist can recommend which is best for you. Several conditions may be related to TMD, but they can be quite varied, and they are often difficult to pinpoint. TM disorders can result when the jaw muscles or jaw joints are affected. The joint, ligaments, and muscles used for chewing and grinding food may all be involved. In some cases, it is not possible to clearly determine the causes. In some complex cases, where more than one doctor is involved, it may be difficult to get a consensus on treatment. Some TM problems result from arthritis, dislocation, and injury. All of these conditions can cause pain and dysfunction. Muscles that move the joints are also subject to injury and disease. Injuries to the jaw, head or neck, and diseases such as arthritis, might result in some TM problems. Other factors that relate to the way the teeth fit together the bitemay cause some types of TMD. Stress is thought to be a factor. TMD

affects women of childbearing age more than men, or older men and women. There are several ways the TMJ disorders may be treated. Your dentist will recommend what type of treatment is needed for your particular problem or recommend that you be referred to a specialist. Treatment may involve a series of steps. The step-by-step plan is in your best interest because only minor, relatively non-invasive treatment may be needed. Diagnosis is an important step before treatment. Part of your clinical examination includes checking the joints and muscles for tenderness, clicking, popping or difficulty moving. Your complete medical history may be reviewed, so it is important to keep your dental office record up-to-date. Your dentist may take x-rays and may make a cast of your teeth to see how your bite fits together. Your dentist may also request specialized x-rays for the TM joints.

If I had been born ten years earlier, I would probably have been one of the "flower kids of the sixties". I would have enjoyed their free living lifestyle, and their music culture was great then and still is a classic today. Because of my upbringing I probably would not have supported anti-war demonstrations and things of that nature. But you might have seen me with a carnation in my hat while duck hunting in the Maurepas Swamp or fishing in some local river system. Who knows. One thing I do know is a peculiar pattern of the azalea bushes in my yard this past fall. Immediately following Hurricane Issac, I noticed one of my azalea bushes blooming. It was late August and that was very strange to me. I thought that maybe the hurricane had something to do with that and maybe it did. I don't know. On one cold morning in December I was backing out of my driveway before daylight heading out for a deer hunt and I noticed another one of the azalea bushes beginning to bloom. I actually stopped the truck and made sure I was seeing what I thought I was seeing. The azalea was indeed blooming in December. As I was writing this article, it is early March and all of my azaleas are blooming again. I know we've had a warm winter, but warm winters are not that uncommon for us in Louisiana. I've never seen azaleas behave like this in my life. Usually when the azaleas in my yard come into full bloom, (normally early April) the turkey hunting in the area that I hunt in (St. Helena) is in full swing. It's now the first week in March and all of the azaleas are in full bloom. By the end of March they will be gone for this season. I can't tell you how many pictures I have of me holding long bearded gobblers in my yard with these bushes in full bloom in the background. If things keep going in the direction they are headed now, I may soon be posing for a picture with a whitetail or a limit of ducks with the azaleas in the background. I sure hope that the days of me holding spring gobblers with the azalea bloom background in early April is not a thing of the past, as is the "flower child hippies" of the sixties. It would be sad to say "Where have all the flowers gone? Gone, gone forever".......

Springtime is a wonderful time for rebirth and for mortals young and old to contemplate the great mysteries of life. Things like-why is a ball that hits the foul pole called fair? And if there really is a law of averages, why havent the Cubs won the National League pennant since the year we dropped the bomb on Japan. Anyway, most of the mysteries that had the third grade crowd at the White Road bus stop concerned recently were the questions on the states LEAP test. I assured the young scholars that there was no need to stress because Governor Jindal and his education czar Mr. White will soon run off all the public school teachers and everyone will have endless summers of ignorance and bliss. Then the only folks left to be tested will be those wishing to run for public office-which I always thought was a good idea anyway-and the people to administer the tests and break the bad news to the applicants should be former teachers. Im so sorry, Mr. Smith, but you failed the common sense and basic ethics sections of the test and therefore you are not qualified to run for __________(Fill in the blank.) In fact, maybe all adults need to take a LEAP test to act as role models and show the kids how its done. The tests could be seasonal and issued on a monthly bases so that a knowledge of current events and cultural literacy would be an integral part of the exam. Dont Call Me Honey, Honey?

earlier days in life when being I have a burr in my sock and need to get something off my chest. I come from a simple world and a different time when words had meanings and emotions are felt. I guess Im getting old and things are irritating me more and more these days. It started about four years ago. One day I was purchasing a six pack and the female cashier bagged the cans and then said, Have a nice day, Sweetie. Sweetie? Who the hell is she to call me Sweetie? That once was an acknowledgement of affection. I didnt even know her. In addition, she was about 30 years younger than me. And she wasnt even in my wheel house. I knew she had never skinned a catfish or cared about weeding the garden. As time went on it started happening more and more. I was called Honey, Honey Bun, Sweetness, Baby and one girl called me Sweet Cheeks. One day after a waitress called me baby I thought about addressed that way meant something. I believe it was my 5th grade birthday party when after the cake and ice cream was served me and my guest, boys and girls, lined up to play Pennie Go Walking. This was a game when boys and girls would get to walk together and hold hands around the house. Boys would line up on one side and girls on the other. Guys and girls would take turns walking through the line, with a pennie between their hands and slid them through the hands from person to person. The key was to drop the penny in the hands of someone you were interested in. I remember a girl from school came to my party, Norman Jean Courtney. As she walked down the row of boys she slid her hands from boy to boy. Then she slid her hands through mine and deposited the penny. My heart lept with joy. I was going to hold a girls hand. It seems these days the

romantic ever sense. Back to the burr in my sock. As time moved on the Baby and Boo Bos happened more and more. Strangers would call me sweet names and I dont even know these people. I been called Honey, Sugar Pie but not Sugar Pie Honey Bunch at the register. I was called Sexy, Sweetheart and Boy Friend in a span of an hour. Who are these people? Are they so removed from a real relationship that they free style their love with every guy that comes through the door. Dont get me wrong I have friends in life that call me these Honey and Baby sweet nothings but I know them and am glad to flirt. Let me take another position. What would happen if I worked in a service position and after giving a woman here cheese burger, I said, Thanks Sweet Cheeks! All hell would break loose. Id be labeled and profiled as a chauvinist, bigot or racist. Its a double standard war and Im on the losing side. Im not a prude and like to keep up with the times but enough is enough. THE ANNUAL BEE CHASE

S u b m i t t e d b y J i m m y D u n k l e y, L o u i s i a n a B e e k e e p e r s A s s o c i a t i o n I always like to write a little story about swarm season and the annual bee chase. Each swarm season, roughly March through mid-June, adds to my already bountiful bag of beekeeping lore. After all, a bee chase is no ordinary chase. Im a bee hunter and my trophy is a large cluster of free bees, just off the ground, at eye level, in a small shrub or tree. For most bee hunters this concept is pure fantasy. Swarms are almost always too high to reach, located in a difficult spot, like an electrical box or gas meter, or perhaps sprayed with a pesticide by an excited homeowner. In most cases the bees up and leave as fast as they gathered, staying just long enough to alarm a homeowner who fears for the safety of their children and their pets. My career as an agriculture inspector, supervisor, and, finally, a program coordinator involved the annual inspection of honey bees and issuance of health certificates to facilitate movement of honey bee colonies from one state to another. Most people would think this is pretty exciting work but it is largely routine and not much out of the ordinary happens from year to year. However, the thought of collecting a swarm of bees in a homeowners yard provided an excuse to get out of the office for an hour or two, in order to retrieve several thousand bees clustered on a limb or piece of playground equipment. You always leave the homeowner happy and you have acquired a free gift to add to your ever expanding bee yard or yards. Since I retired a few years ago my ex-secretary has become my swarm call coordinator, always having all the information I need to help the public and help me. I must admit that I trained her so well that she now provides me with information that I dont ever remember asking her to obtain. Of course, that notion could well be because of my ever advancing age. I usually ask for gas money to drive all over the parish in pursuit of bees. Most folks dont mind and it sure helps to motivate me to respond to a homeowners call for assistance. I would hate to think that someone needing help thinks I like driving all over the parish on Two perfect collections, five feet off the ground and within only a few miles of my house. On March 11th, a very rainy day, my former secretary called me to collect a swarm. I was reluctant to get involved but she insisted that it was in a shrub about 5 feet off the about 5 feet off the ground. I cut the small limbs around the cluster and the bees hardly moved. On my final cut I was able to hold the entire swarm and lower them into my bee box. I lost only a few dozen bees and had a very fine collection to add to my apiary or bee yard. my dime looking for something to do. Sometimes upon arrival Im met and told that the bees just left a few minutes ago. Heck, one of my bee hunter brothers told me ground and it was bigger than a basketball. Reluctantly I called the man. He was at work and had not seen the bees for a couple of hours but he insisted they had been On March 14th she called again with the same story but this time it was sunny and freezing cold. The swarm was also smaller and about 10 miles from the house, so I asked the homeowner if they would mind paying me $10.00 to cover my gas. They agreed and off I went again. I got to the house and the homeowner pointed out a 3 pound swarm of bees in a small shrub about 4 feet off the ground. The limbs were a bit larger so I decided to brush the cluster of bees into my bee box. Oddly enough, it was so cold that the bees did not want to break cluster and in two or three passes with my bee brush I had almost all of the bees in my box. I collected my money and off I went. I must say it was another great bee chase and another successful bee collection! Bee hunting can be a lot of fun but you can do a lot of running around and the bees wont usually be so easy to collect. They are either too high to reach or gone all together. In these two cases it was Easy, Peasy and added two more colonies to my apiary. Three weeks later and two quarts of sugar syrup each and both colonies are doing well. Footnote: A honey bee swarm results from overcrowding of a nesting site. The old queen or a virgin will leave with thousands of workers to search for a new home and they often gather in a cluster at a temporary site until a permanent location is found. Honey bee swarms are usually docile and the bees are not likely to sting unless disturbed. If collected before they relocate into a structure they can easily be removed at very little homeowner expense. A-Glazing Grace How Sweet the Sound

A sit down with Kane Glaze
I know you all have been waiting to find out who our newest spotlight artist is. The wait is over; it is none other than our very own Kane Glaze. Kanes parents John Glaze, Jr. and Maxine Marchand were music folks helped move his career along. He could find the sound he was looking for on the guitar and convert it to the piano. Not letting any grass grow under his feet Kane included the drums. Truthfully, at first, it was a

Glaze boys to play. (The K.C. Hall is gone but Andys Grocery, run by Mr. Jamess son Jesse, is the location of the old hall). Kane made his first $10 in the music business. Now that their feet were wet, so to speak, the boys put in hours practicing and getting better all the time. The band Koo got a big break playing a teen dance at the Governors mansion and a subsequent gig at the Jambalaya Festival on the Saturday night. After playing the Jambalaya Festival, Kane says he couldnt believe there were that many people in Gonzales. At that time they were playing popular music of the era, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Grand Funk Railroad, etc. I remember those guys. Koo even had a 45 record, produced by their dad John Glaze, Jr. The songs on the record were Movin On and Why. Well have to ask Kane to sing these for us sometime. After graduation from high school Kane left for Florida to attend Liberty Bible College in Pensacola. While in Florida he met, fell in love and married a girl from there and began his apprenticeship to become an electrician (still his trade he works for Ocshner). While in Florida Kane played music in church. Believing that his marriage was for life, Kane was devastated when after only six years things didnt work out and they divorced. In 1982, after a visit home to see family, Kane got a call from an old friend, Randy Hart of Hart Electric (Ascension Electric Supply),

offering him a job at home. Looking to make a new start Kane wasted no time in accepting the position. At the age of 26, after coming home from Florida with music still in his blood, and barely winning a talent night at Buddy Roys Club (the winner got drunk and Kane won by default. True story, cant make this up folks, Kane would like to shake that

guys hand if he only knew who he was). After that, Kane became the keyboard player for the Robert Duplessis Band. He later teamed up with Alan and Joey Ray, Heidi Tracey and Tim Waguespack to form a band called Squeeze. In 1987 Van Broussard offered the keyboard position in the Bayou Boogie Band to Kane, he accepted and stayed with Van for three years. When Van found out Kane could sing as well as play keyboard he started letting him fill in at gigs. Fans, being

Ricky Braud, Alan Ray, Paul Landry, Kevin Templet, Joey Ray and Kane from the start. John played sax almost his entire life (he even played on one of Kanes albums) and Maxine played piano. The Glaze siblings in order are: Zane, Kane, Lane, Ongel, Johnny III and Chetta. Kane tells me that at the ripe age of 12 he was looking for something to do with his life. After some searching and talking with the Almighty he decided to give music a shot. Older brother Zane had a guitar that he would allow Kane to play along with an instruction book-Melbays Beginners Guitar You Can Play Guitar. Taking that title to heart Kane did indeed learn to play the guitar. Kanes mom had a piano that also couple of metal trash cans and some old pots and pans. He finally managed to get a full set of drums but it took a few years for it to become a reality. In large families you had to think long and hard about what you wanted for Christmas since you only had one shot at getting it. (Kids today wouldnt understand this concept!) At first it was a snare and cymbal, the rest would take some time. Once he had a full set of drums the band Koo was born. On guitar was Zane, Lane on bass and Kane on drums and vocals. After much practice Koo got their first paying gig. The K.C. Hall that used to be on Highway 621 was having a dance and Mr. Andy James hired the

what they are, liked Kane well enough but they came to see and hear Van. Recognizing his talent Van advised and encouraged Kane to go with another band where he could sing more. So in 1990 he was approached by Coozan (Joey Ray, Alan Ray, Kevin Templet, Ricky Braud and Paul Landry) and he shared a book of songs he had written. Together they formed Kane Glaze and the Coozan Band, turned out to be a good combination. Kane Glaze and Coozan was one of the hottest bands around in the 90s and early 2000s. The combination of Kane and Joeys vocals was a pleasure to witness and dance to. I actively followed the band during the 90s since I so enjoyed the diversity of sounds they produced. The bands first album was a 10 song cassette tape named Winners Never Quit. Roy Shaw at the Music Center distributed the cassette for the band. I first met Kane and Joey at the 1St Annual South Louisiana Music Awards held at Sedgies Lounge. I was pretty new in radio but had been playing Kanes Christmas Song on my show since it was on the flip side of a Van Broussard forty five record. After hearing the first cassette I wanted to get more of their music to play on my show. I was honored to be able to release the cassette to the public on my Sunday night show. Everything went great for the release but when I went to implement some of their stuff the following week I had a problem. There was no good way to cue a song on a cassette at the time in the studio. It was hard to fill requests for certain songs. I told Kane about my dilemma and he graciously presented me with 12 eight track carts (old time radio) to load the bands music on, making my problem a non-issue. I know he was looking after both our interests but I cant tell you how much I appreciated that gesture. After dating for four years Kane married Lizabeth Elin Greenfield in April of 1988 and had three wonderful kids, Kane Phillip, Jandi (the beautiful redhead) and Dakota. Coming home late from a gig one night Kane found the whole family in bed with Liz. Not wanting to disturb them he cleared all the toys off the bed in the kids room and planned on going to sleep. While lying there he got the inspiration for Mickey Mouse one of the most requested songs Ive ever played. To this day Mickey Mouse is one of my most heavily requested songs. The song turned a whole new generation on to Swamp Pop music, all thanks to Liz and the kids. You can get a copy on the Million Reasons Why CD by Kane and

Coozan. Their final CD was titled Couldnt Make It Without You. Kane also recorded another album called Americajun. (All of these CDs can be purchased at D&J Grocery on Black Bayou Road in Gonzales.) I know I still get a little nervous when I have to get up in front of a large number of people, so I asked Kane if that was ever a problem for him. He said he always gets butterflies but one time he REALLY got nervous (enough to take Pepto) . It was when they opened for Billy Joe Royal at the Cajun Hall (formerly Cowboys, where ironically he first danced with Ms. Liz). He calmed down after a couple of songs but it was mighty touchy there for a bit.

She is with the Lord and I plan to see her one day, Lord willing. I dont know if I have 30 more years, or 30 more minutes in this life, but one thing I know. You can absolutely trust God. If I believe He exists, then I have to believe I can trust Him right? I dont know about the future. And yet, I am not done. I must go on and live my life and try to be like her. She gave without expecting anything in return, and I am sure she had no regrets. God made us all with a little box inside and that only He can fill. Liz knew this and sowed her life by giving. I honestly never met anyone that did not like her, what a legacy. She did not have to say to you she was a Christian, you knew it by the way she lived. I had a wonderful wife and I knew it. Thanks so much Roland, didnt mean to get all preachy, Im not looking for pity. I am blessed and would like to say thanks to all who sent thoughts and prayers for my family and me. It was so touching, I cried for a long time, I love this part of the world, they are the best cause they are family! May God Bless You All! Liz was such a giving person. I interview. I cant express how much it meant to me being able to have this time to share with him. I felt a strong bond with Kane during this interview having both lost someone so close to us. Kane has become involved at church helping others to face crises in their lives. Celebrate Recovery group meets on Thursday nights; look for Kane on Face book if he can be of help, God Bless! I know I say this in just about every article but we have THE BEST artists in Ascension Parish! I am always proud and humbled by the service that they all do for their community. Just an aside but I found out that Kane went to school with Mike Strong at Ascension Magazine and Mike did the graphics on the bands albums. I love the connections across the community I find during my interviews. Heres hoping that you enjoyed this article as much as I enjoyed putting it together.

On January 19, 2006, Liz discovered she had breast cancer. Devastating news for any family, but Liz and Kane faced it together. They went through countless chemo and radiation treatments. For three years Liz remained cancer free, but then in the fourth year, the cancer had returned. Never a complainer, Liz went about her days with unwavering courage and faith. On May 16, 2012, God called her home. Kanes words on Liz I have had what most men only dream about. It was my honor to be married to Liz. We adored each other and we were not afraid to keep the vow. She taught me how to love again, unconditionally. She was the best half of this whole and we made each other complete. I would always tell her, She was the best woman since the invention of women! She would laugh and call me crazy. I wrote many a

Method: Reheat your potatoes using either the microwave or by re-boiling them for about 5 minutes. In a large mixing bowl combine the heated potatoes, corn, chopped sausage, green onions, garlic, peeled crawfish tails, mayo, Creole mustard, and Creole seasoning and mix well. Take your mixture and form into cakes, approx 3 oz each. In a medium saut pan, heat your oil over med hi heat. Next dredge your cakes in the flour, then the milk and egg mixture, and finally in the Panko bread crumbs. Gently drop your cakes, 2 to 3 at a time into your heated oil and cook approximately 3 minutes on each side. Remove from heat and allow to cool 2 minutes before serving.

The Rotary Club of Gonzales Annual Food Festival Fighting Hunger

The Rotary Club of Gonzales enlisted help in their fight against hunger. The Annual Gonzales Rotary Food Festival, a food show benefiting the St. Theresa of Avila Catholic Church Food Bank and other charitable organizations. Every year since its inception, the food show has grown both in its number of patrons and vendors. The festival has created quite a buzz, as it has become a symbol in the community for the spirit of the parish: good friends and neighbors, a worthy cause, and great food. This years food show was enjoyed on March 19, 2013 at the Gonzales Civic Center. Prominent local restaurant owners, were invited to join in the battle against hunger

by showcasing their favorite dishes. All participants received booth space where signage and displays were displayed. Because this event has grown over the years, 45 vendors was the maximum that could sign up. St. Theresas Food Pantry is a nondenominational food bank and provides hundreds of households throughout the parish with assistance every year. The Pantry relies on the Rotary and the support of local businesses and citizens to continue providing nutritious meals to people in need. This was a wonderful opportunity for businesses to give back to the community and promote themselves to high-profile guests, area policy makers, and citizens attending the show. The event was Co-Chaired by Lyman Abadie and Glenda Shaheen woulf like to thank all the participants and volunteers that made this event better than ever.

Farewell from 2012 Miss Gonzales Jambalaya Queen

My year as the 2012 Gonzales Jambalaya Queen is slowly winding down - and though I am sad its coming to an end - looking back, I realize I have had an absolutely amazing reign. I have traveled over 3,695 miles across the state of Louisiana and to Washington, DC representing the Jambalaya Festival and City of Gonzales. I have picked Oranges in the Orange groves of Plaquemines Parish, learned how to sew a bag of harvested rice in Crowley, picked fresh Strawberries on the farm of the Ponchatoula Strawberry King, and went crawfishing in Breaux Bridge - just to name a few. During my travels I have made many memories and friends that

will last a lifetime and for that, I am forever grateful. This year could not have been complete without the amazing support system and family I have in the Jambalaya Festival Association. All I could hope for this year is to have made them proud. I was lucky to have an amazing Jambalaya World Champ, Danny Robert, by my side this year. We have had so much fun serving Jambalaya in our community at the Senior Citizens sock hop, the Gonzales Veterans Day Celebration and Dreams Come True Fundraisers. He and his helper, Kurt, are always such good sports about the numerous pictures my wonderful "queen mother" insists on taking and they always keep me laughing! I am truly a lucky girl to have had this year as queen and to have forever gained a second family in the Jambalaya Festival Association.

With the 2013 pageant steadily approaching I am excited to meet all of the lucky ladies vying to become the next Miss Gonzales Jambalaya and to have the best year of her life representing this amazing organization. The pageant will be held May 4th at the Gonzales Civic Center.
