Energy Sources used worldwide for production of electricity

Objectives Define natural resources Classify resources into renewable and non-renewable Learn about different energy sources used in different countries

Materials needed Copies of page with clues and questions (See resources) Scissors Paper Pencils/pens Copies of blank world map

Time duration 55 minutes

Terms to know Natural resources: everything that we use from the environment to satisfy our necessities Renewable Resources: Resources that can be replenished in a short period of time Non-renewable resources: Resources that are limited in quantity, and cant be replenished in a short period of time Energy: the ability to do work o Non-renewable Energy Oil Coal

Natural Gas Nuclear Energy

Renewable Energy Solar Energy Wind Power Wave and Tidal Power Geothermal Biomass Hydropower

Activities Defining renewable and non-renewable resources (~25 minutes) o Write down in the board the terms renewable resource and nonrenewable resource. Ask the students to tell you what ideas come to mind when they think about this words (brainstorming). Write their answers on the board. Divide the class in groups of 4. Give each group a copy of the page with the clues. Tell the students to cut the clues and give one to each member. Each student should read the clue and share the information with the rest of the team. The students will use the clues to generate a definition for renewable and non-renewable resources. Assign 3 out of 6 questions to each group (Every group should answer the first question plus 2 other assigned by the teacher) Students will discuss and write down the answers to the questions Each group will share their answers with the class and we will discuss them as a group

Lecturing the students about renewable and non-renewable energy sources (~10 minutes)

Symbolizing the energy source (~15 minutes) o o Divide the class in groups of 4 Two folded papers will be given to each group, and inside this paper the name of an energy source will be written. Make sure the written energy source remains a group secret. Each group will choose among themselves two artists The group will think about different symbols they could give to the energy source written on the paper, they will draw the symbols, and later choose one symbol to use for the activity The artists of each group will go to the front of the class and draw the symbol The rest of the class will think about the answer and raise their hands if they know it. The teacher will choose a student to give the answer.

o o

Where in the world is that energy source? (~5 minutes) o This activity will be done at the same time as Symbolizing the energy source. World maps will be given to each student. When the students know which is the energy source symbolized on the board, the teacher will ask the students to give examples of countries they know which use that type of energy source. Have the students put an X mark on the mentioned countries and to write down the energy source on top of the X mark. Also mention the top producers of the energy source (See resources) and have them put the X mark on those countries as well. When the class ends, students can take their maps with the information theyve learned.

o Conclusion -

After the class, students will have learned about what natural resources are, how you can classify them into renewable and non-renewable, their

importance to us, and how you can use the energy produced by natural resources to generate electricity. Assessment/Evaluation In order to evaluate the students knowledge/understanding of the lecture presented during the day, the activities Symbolizing the energy source and Where in the world is that energy source? will be made.
