Date: February 6, 2013 Period: 1 Notes: This lesson is the second lesson of the circles unit. This is the second time the
students have been asked to completely discover properties on their own without my guidance.
Objectives:
At the completion of this lesson, students will: Use prior knowledge of circles, angles, and segments to apply to their understanding of the properties of circles. Generate discussion with their peers and their teacher of some questions they would like to answer about the properties of circles. Generate possible properties they may believe are true based on their discussion with their peers as well as their manipulation of the circles in the TI
nspire.
(Eventually) be able to prove and apply these properties (by the completion of this unit).
Investigate, justify, and apply theorems about the arcs determined by the rays of angles formed by two lines intersecting a circle when the vertex is: o o o inside the circle (two chords) on the circle (tangent and chord) outside the circle (two tangents, two secants, or tangent and secant) (G.G.51) Investigate, justify, and apply theorems about arcs of a circle cut by two parallel lines (G.G.52) Investigate, justify, and apply theorems regarding segments intersected by a circle: o o o o along two tangents from the same external point along two secants from the same external point along a tangent and a secant from the same external point along two intersecting chords of a given circle (G.G.53)
Agenda

Materials:
1. Guideline conjecture sheet 2. Homework Assignment 3. nspires, including teacher edition software 4. Possible a document camera
Prior Assignment/Preparation:
Students will have learned the definitions of chords, secants, tangents, and arcs. They also have had plenty of practice on the n-spires.

The students will be asked to work in groups to decide what they want to construct and discover in their circles. They will (hopefully) generate discussion in their groups. Every 10 minutes or so, we will have a whole group discussion to guide the smaller group discussion.
Closure
This lesson will be the beginning of the discovery activity for this unit, and so it will not have complete closure until all the properties listed in the standards above have been discussed. At that point, the students will write formal and informal proofs to demonstrate their understanding of these properties.
Assessment
Students will be asked to prove the properties they discovered. Once the students have proven the properties, they will be asked to apply these properties in a homework set, a lab, a quiz, and a test.
