PREFACE
Because of the rapid changes in technology, the study of statistics must undergo significant changes. Our teaching methods must be re-evaluated to incorporate the technology to help students understand probability and statistical concepts that are presented to them. The enclosed statistical explorations are designed for any elementary statistics course. These explorations use the MINITAB for Windows software to alleviate much of the computational drudgery, thus enabling the students to concentrate on the discovery, application, and reinforcement of the concepts presented in their lectures. The primary goal of these explorations is to implement the use of technology in the teaching of any elementary statistics course. It is hoped that the use of these explorations will encourage students to learn through discovery in a relaxed environment. This book contains sixteen explorations (0 - 15) and cover a wide range of topics found in any elementary statistics course. These explorations present topics in sequence as would be found in any elementary statistics text. However, the instructor can decide on the appropriate order for his/her course. The MINITAB for Windows software was chosen because of the combination of its power and ease with which the students can learn to use it. Also, since the MINITAB software is used in about 70% of all fortune 500 companies, it is important that students have hands-on experience with it. Each exploration includes a review section of the appropriate topics covered for the particular exploration. Detailed stepby-step instructions are given in the explorations as to which commands to use to obtain the desired results. At the end of each exploration there is a HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT section which the students will be required to complete, when appropriate. In some instances, assignments are included which can be assign as group exploratory projects. Keep in mind, these explorations are intended for discovery and should not be used as a tutorial guide for MINITAB . Moreover, once a student has completed these explorations, they most certainly will be very knowledgeable about the MINITAB software.

It would be beneficial to the students if they work in pairs when working on these explorations since the discussions that occur as they work will help them to understand the concepts with which they are dealing. Minitab Statistical Software is a registered trademark of Minitab, Inc.
