COUNCILWOMAN CINDY BASS' 6TH ANNUAL SUMMER EVENTS SERIES
KICKS OFF JULY 9
Councilwoman Cindy Bass’ 6th Annual Summer Events Series
returns to Philadelphia on July 9 and will run through August 29! The
FREE event series has drawn nearly 18,000 attendees to enjoy our city’s
outdoor neighborhood spaces as part of the Reclaiming Our Public
Spaces campaign. The 2018 Summer Events Series features outdoor
events every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.
Monday brings Showtime at the Apollo to Stenton Park, 4600 N. 16th
Street. Guests can perform in a talent show and compete during a trivia
challenge to win various prizes like gift cards and event tickets. There
will also be a mini carnival for children featuring a moon bounce,
caricature artists and face painters, a free crab feast on opening night and
free hot dogs and hamburgers each week. Families can enjoy live
entertainment, a DJ, and plenty of activities for children while event host
Derek Lee of D+J Entertainment emcees the evening.
Billboard-charted Breakwater Band will open Jazz in the Park, a free
outdoor concert-style event which runs every Tuesday beginning July 10.
Host Serena ‘Sol’ Brown is billing this year’s event as “Battle of the
Bands,” and it attracts professional artists from around the region. The
Urban Guerilla Orchestra (UGO), which has previously performed Wawa
Welcome America July 4 Concert, will close out the weekly event with a
free performance.
On Wednesday, Oldies in the Park in Vernon Park is one of the most
attended events. Located on the Germantown Avenue business and
historic corridor, in front of the Black Writers Museum and across from
ACES Musem, the event features a food vendor and varying interactive
activities for families. It’s an outdoor dance party with the legendary
Philly DJ Gary O spinning hits from the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s while
attendees dance the night away. Last year, renowned photographer Jamel
Shabazz took free portraits at Oldies through a partnership with Mural
Arts Philadelphia.
Finally, Fridays bring Outdoor Movie Nights in various locations.

Nation’s Largest Annual Urban Health and Music Festival hosted in Philadelphia
FREE Festival comes to Historic Penn’s Landing featuring T.I., SWV &
Estelle
Pennsylvania Care Health and Wellness will host the 2018
Pennsylvania Care Health Fest on Saturday, July 28, 2018, 12pm - 8pm
at Penn’s Landing.
This FREE urban health and music festival is expected to bring
between 15,000-20,000 community residents across the Greater
Philadelphia region and will include medical health screenings for
glucose/diabetes and blood pressure as well as dental resources and eye
examinations.
Now celebrating its second year, the Urban Health and Music festival
has expanded to a week of events kicking off Sunday, July 22, 2018 at

screenings of family-friendly blockbuster hits like
“Coco,” “Moana,” and “Black Panther” every
Friday through August 4. Outdoor movie
screenings at Nicetown Park include “Emoji
Movie” and “Boss Baby.” In North Philadelphia,
Panati Recreation Center hosts outdoor movie
screenings including “Jumanji,” “Wonder,” and
“Black Panther,” while Logan School hosts
outdoor screenings through August 24 that include
“I Believe” and “Avengers: Infinity War.”

The Black Professionals News Black Friday Initiative to Support Black Owned Businesses
My name is Earl Harvey, I am the Publisher of The Black
Professionals Newspaper (BPN ) in Philadelphia and the Atlantic City
Times in AC. Our newspaper was created to provide affordable
advertising opportunities for small businesses and non-profits that service
the black community. I am a marketing consultant and I know most small
businesses have limited budgets for advertising and marketing which is
badly needed to grow their businesses. We also provide website design
and email marketing in addition to print advertising.
I am working with a group of Philadelphia businessmen to develop
strategies to improve our communities. I have developed a concept called
Black Friday which will be a spin off from Black Friday, the biggest
shopping day of the year. Instead of just one shopping day, I propose that
the community support black owned businesses every Friday. Of course
we encourage supporting our businesses every day of the week, but for
now if we can do a special promotion to drive customers to our
businesses just one day a week, we hope it will grow from there.
At the end of the test period we will aggregate participation provide a
report and hopefully launch Black Friday as a City Wide Community and
Economic Development Initiative. The purpose is to grow the businesses
and hopefully they will create jobs for the community, please join us!

Progressive National Baptist Convention Seeks Return of Moral Values and Civil Rights
during the 57th Annual Session in Philadelphia, PA
The theme “Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community” offers
a roadmap for the black church as it reclaims its position of social justice
leadership in the black community.
The Progressive National Baptist Convention, Inc. (PNBC), led by
President Dr. James C. Perkins, will hold its 57th Annual Session on
August 6-10, 2018 at the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, 1201 Market
Street, Philadelphia, PA 19107. Over 5,000 representatives from the
denomination are expected to gather for weeklong events of preaching,
Christian Education, and social justice strategizing. The Philadelphia
location bears special meaning as PNBC held its first Annual Session in
the City of Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection in 1962.
Founded during the Civil Rights Movement, PNBC was formed in
1961 to give full voice, sterling leadership and active support to the
American and world fight for human freedom. PNBC was the spiritual
home of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and is still fighting against systems
that harm poor and vulnerable populations. Poverty, mass incarceration,
healthcare, and voting rights are key areas of focus.
A press conference will be held on Monday, August 6 at 1:00 PM at
the Liberty Bell to bring attention to the policies of the current
Administration that hurt communities of color, the poor, and
working-class families. Additionally, nationwide strategies will be
provided with the intent of increasing voter participation in the midterm
elections. Press conference speakers include Dr. Perkins; Rev. Dr.
Raphael Warnock, PNBC Social Justice Commission Chair and Senior
Pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, GA; Dr. Freddy Haynes,
Senior Pastor of Friendship-West Baptist Church in Dallas, Texas, and
Dr. John Mendez, Senior Pastor of Emmanuel Baptist Church, Winston
Salem, NC. Dr. Perkins states, “During the 50th anniversary of the
assassination of Dr. King, we need to keep his legacy alive by addressing
important issues before members of Congress. Dr. King impacted social
policy, and we must do the same.”
The Annual Session will encompass The Angela Project; which is a

3-year movement commemorating the 400th Anniversary of Black
Enslavement in America. PNBC members will join members of the
National Baptist Convention of America and the Cooperative Baptist
Fellowship for a rich and empowering symposium on Monday, August 6
from 9:00 a.m. in the plenary ballroom.
As one of the highlights of the Annual Session, preaching from

NEW SUMMER CONCERT SERIES BRINGS 50+ LIVE MUSIC EVENTS TO
PHILADELPHIA'S HISTORIC DISTRICT
DJ, Jazz, Latin, Acoustic Music & More Enliven Summer Nights June
Through September. We Got the Beats: DJ Royale Wawa Welcome
America POPS on Independence DJ Royale (left) will perform in We Got
the Beats, a series curated by Yusuf Muhammed, founder of Veteran
Freshman, and part of VISIT PHILADELPHIA’s Summer Sounds in the
Historic District. The traveling series takes place the first Friday of each
month and features two DJs performing in one location.
This summer, visitors to Philadelphia’s Historic District can enjoy
50+ live musical performances as part of Summer Sounds in the Historic
District, a series of long-popular concerts and new programming curated
by VISIT PHILADELPHIA®. From June 1 through September 7, jazz,
DJ tunes, Latin grooves, even the sweet sounds of symphony will fill the
parks, patios and plazas at more than a dozen locations from FringeArts
located along the Delaware River Waterfront to the Philadelphia History
Museum at the Atwater Kent on 7th Street.
“In the summer, the Historic District is packed with people all day
long,” said Meryl Levitz, president & CEO, VISIT PHILADELPHIA®.
“We want to give all of them more reasons to spend their nights in the
district too, and that’s what this Summer Sounds series does. Nearly
every evening of the week, residents and visitors can make a night of it
by grabbing a bite to eat and then enjoying music under the stars in this
beautiful neighborhood.”

in jam-session style at various locations throughout the Historic District.
Suzann Christine pays tribute to Nina Simone on June 27, Chill Moody
honors Duke Ellington and Marvin Gay on July 25 and Brianna Cash
takes on Grover Washington and Stevie Wonder on August 22.

Philly Free Streets and a Grammy Nominated Artist on North Broad
On Saturday, August 11, 2018, Beech Community Services will host
the 12th Annual Beech“Jazz on the Ave” Music Fest, headlined by
Grammy nominated PJ Morton. This free event, which attracts thousands
of local and national visitors, takes place during Philly Free Streets on
Cecil B. Moore Avenue with two stages of live music (between Broad
Street and 17thStreet) from noon to 8:30 p.m.
"The Beech “Jazz on the Ave” Music Fest is known for hosting
neighborhoods from across the city and country, and celebrating the
musical history of the North Central community,’ states Christine Brown,
Director of Beech Community Services. "We’re excited to share this day
with Philly Free Streets, and provide food, vending and music to
everyone in attendance.”
This year’s music fest will be hosted by Patty Jackson and Dyana
Williams and includes performances by Algebra Blessett, Charisa The
Violin Diva, Laurin Talese, the Clef Club Youth Senior Ensemble. The
Philly Soul Stock stage will be located at 17th & Cecil B. Moore Avenue
and will showcase up and coming artists from Philadelphia and the

Jazz in the Park: Sundays were made for chilling, and that’s exactly
what visitors can do atSpruce Street Harbor Park during the waterfront
park’s popular Jazz in the Park series. Jazz lovers can grab a hammock
and/or a beer to listen to the sounds of Tara + DM Hotep Middleton, Tim
Brey, Julian Hartwell, Chris Stevens, Korey Riker and Ernest Stuart.
Every third Sunday, June 17, July 15 and August 19, 3-7 p.m. Spruce

Summer Sounds on the Square: The sounds of blues, rock, zydeco
and folk music will fill the Great Lawn Stage at Franklin Square for
seven summer Saturdays. New to the Historic District’s offerings, this

Art Sanctuary Presents a Month of Free Activities During the 34th Annual Celebration of
Black Arts Festival in Philadelphia July 1st - July 31st
The Celebration of Black Arts Festival (CBA) returns for the 34th
Annual and this year it will be presented as a summer extravaganza
running from July 1 - 31, 2018! One of the nation’s oldest African
American literary and arts events. The month-long event filled with
programming for all ages, backgrounds and interests.
This year’s events will include art workshops, writing workshops,
dance movement classes, yoga classes, health & beauty discussions,
panel discussions, live performances and more for the community at
large including youth events as well as family orientated activities!
Majority of the events are free and open to the public courtesy of
generous partners as well as sponsors including: Women In Media (WIM
Global), The African American Museum in Philadelphia, Arts &
Business Council for Greater Philadelphia, Odunde 365, Pennsylvania
Council of the Arts, The Philadelphia Cultural Fund, BalletX, Eagles Run
at Elsmere, Fresh Artists, Houser Audio, Jenkintown Building Services,
Left Lane Books, One Step Away, and the Wyncote Foundation.
The centerpiece of the 34th Celebration of Black Arts Festival is the
month-long exhibition, ‘Do You Hear What I See’ featuring rarely seen
photographs of black music icons from by photographer C. Ron St. Clair.
The showcase will include several candid photos of influential musicians
in the 20th century, including Berry Gordon, Duke Ellington, Harry
Belafonte, Patti LaBelle, are more! Each art piece will be available for

Not only is the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City bringing
world-class entertainment to the resort, it is supporting the Atlantic City
Free Public Library’s efforts to provide free music to the community.
The casino is the new sponsor of the library’s Third Thursday
Concert Series — a free monthly music series held 5 p.m. at the Main
Library on the third Thursday of each month through September.

Director Robert Rynkiewicz said.

summer in June, July, August and September at Kennedy Plaza across
from Boardwalk Hall. Atlantic City visitors will be treated to
performances from genres including Broadway, Rock & Roll, Rhythm &
Blues and everything in between.
Broadway on the Boardwalk is back by popular demand on Monday
nights July 16 and July 23 from 8:00 PM to 9:30 PM. The casts of
Broadway's hottest musicals take the stage for free performances from
some of the most popular and critically acclaimed musicals on Broadway
today including “Wicked,” “Beautiful – The Carole King Musical,”
“Sponge Bob Square Pants – The Broadway Musical,” “School of Rock,”
“Anastasia,” “Summer – The Donna Summer Musical” and more.
Produced by JudiLudiProductions, the series will be hosted by comedian
Dena Blizzard and is sure to light up the night.
