BODY (LEIB)

organisms considered purely with regard to those characteristics belonging to them independent of their animation. BODY (Leib) . Husserl uses the term Leib to denote the body of an animate organism. On this understanding, the body is that which is involved in our consciousness of the world as the perceptual organ of the experiencing subject. The body in this sense is that in which are localized the sensible events (the presenting contents or sensation-contents) by means of which the sensible determinations of objects are presented to consciousness, and that in which are localized the sensible events (kinaesthetic sensations ) by means of which the experiencing subject is aware of its own activities as perceptual organ. H usserl uses the notion of kinaesthetic sensations broadlysomaesthetic sensations better captures Husserls meaningto denote the experien cing sub je cts aw are ne ss no t o nly o f m usc ular movement but of the bodys attitude. Husserl uses kinaesthesis also to denote the capabilities for movement that are localized in the body. By this Husserl means the capacity for the kinds of movements of which we are aware in our kinaesthetic sensing and which contribute to our perceptual awareness of material objects. With respect to the perceptual experience of material objects in space, the body, insofar as it is the perceptual organ of the experiencing subject is first experienced as an absolute here, the orientation point for the nontheoretical encounter of space. The notion of objective space as threedimensional and as a system of places no longer tied to a single body necessarily requires the capability for the body to move in such a way that the there of the object encountered in perception can become the here w h e re th e e x p e rie n c in g sub jects stand s.
