Junkyard Wars Tech-Soc Sustainability Challenge

Problem Statement: Mechanical street sweeping mechanism/ machine

Objective: There are quite a few areas in the campus (especially near the Hostels situated beside the gates). The wastes there keep piling up mainly because the workmen do not prefer to touch them, or because there aren't many workmen. This device will ensure that the flora and fauna of our campus is preserved. The aim is to build a machine that is capable of collecting accumulated as well as isolated waste that are present in the path of the vehicle (arena) and also in the sides. The vehicle must possess mechanisms that collect and store the waste scattered across the arena and finally dump all the collected waste in a dumping box. Device Dimensions and Functions: 1. The device must ensure that there is no human contact with the waste. 2. The device must be easily maneuvered. 3. The device must possess a collecting mechanism (3) that collects the waste accumulated over some area and stores it in the machine. 4. Device must possess a mechanism (2) to accumulate the waste spread over a large area to a small area such that it can be collected by the above mechanism. 5. Another mechanism (3) must be present of the vehicle to collect the waste that will be strewn in the path of the vehicle 6. The vehicle dimensions must be of length within the length of cycle and width within 1.2m. 7. The recyclable and non recyclable waste must be stored in separate spaces within the prototype. 8. The collection mechanisms can extend a maximum of 1.5 m from the Chassis of the vehicle.

9. The mechanism to collect the waste strewn along the path of the vehicle must be capable of collecting small waste that cannot be accumulated by mechanism 2. 10. While lifting the accumulated waste and storing it over the vehicle, unnecessary material like stones/sand must not creep into the waste collected. 11. Only a single person will be operating the vehicle 12. The mechanism must possess a mechanical advantage and must be easy to use. 13. The arena will be 2m wide traversing an arbitrary curved path. 14. Junk of varying sizes will be strewn all over the arena. Additionally junk will be present in either side of the arena at a maximum distance of 1.5 m from the path boundary. 15. The vehicle is not allowed to go outside the arena. The accumulation and collection of waste must be done by it while the vehicle is inside the arena. 16. The operator is required to be stationed on board and is not allowed to push or pull the mechanism. 17. Waste that would be placed in the arena can be dry leaves, newspaper, polythene bags, cardboard cartons etc Testing Criteria: 1. The mass of waste that can be lifted and transferred into the bin in one cycle. The team which can transfer the most weight will be awarded 30 Points and the other teams will be awarded relatively. 2. (Weight that can be lifted in one go)/ (time taken to lift it and drop it in the bin). The hostel with the highest number will be awarded 25 points and the other teams will be awarded relatively. 3. The different types of wastes that can be lifted. There will be a test where the hostels will be tested for successfully transporting different types of materials (provided by the coordinators) into the bin. The hostel with the highest number will be awarded 25 points and the other teams will be awarded relatively. 4. Robustness of the mechanical device- 15 points. Other hostels will be awarded relatively. 5. Aesthetics of the mechanical device- 5 points. Other hostels will be awarded relatively. 6. Sorting of wastes into recyclable and non-recyclable waste-5 points Materials provided: 2 cycles in working condition (to be taken care of by hostel) Junk which includes L channels, box channels, junk cycles, and from the junkyards in insti. Welding and gas cutting equipment. Ball bearings Cycle mechanic will be there for assistance.
