Car chase ends in disaster
Dear Editor: William Blanchard, 76, was killed last Tuesdayan innocent victim of a high speed chase. Is a missing license plate chase worth someones life ? (The pursuing officer did not know the car was stolen). Bill Blanchard left behind a loving family and a large circle of friends, he left a huge hole in the music world, and a hole in the world of airport safety. He grew up in Claremont, where his father was a music professor at Pomona College. He retired from Chaffey College in 1986. He was a pilot who was long-associated with Cable Airport where he became safety chairman in 1978. He wrote the 1981 Master Plan and continued working at Cable Airport as Planning Director and secured many more grants throughout the years. He helped obtain the first FAA grant to a private airport in Southern California in 1985. High speed chases should not be allowed in the city nor in residential areas unless there is an absolutely compelling reason. The laws that permit these chases must be changed. Surely a human life is far more important than catching a car thief or red-light violator. These chases are so old-fashioned. What about technology? The officer can radio ahead to alert other officers to stop someone. The police car video camera can record the vehicle and its driver for more sane, calm investigations later by trained officers. What else can we do using readily available simple technology? If the police believe the chase is worth the very serious risk, then let them use a really ear-splitting sound that might adequately warn people. AND, let them change all traffic signals in the vicinity to rapidflash red to warn innocent drivers and bystanders.

Protest for peace

Dear Editor: This letter is in response to Christine Liles comments in the July 7 edition of the COURIER. I disagree with the sentiment expressed; we are in a war which is opposed by the vast majority of the people of this country. I am involved with the Vietnam veterans against the war, and in talking to both active-duty soldiers and Iraq and Afghanistan vets, I have discovered that they, too, are increasingly against the war. One of the things we are not looking at as a country is the staggering number of soldiers who have been stop-lossed (ordered to be deployed past their enlistment). Many are NOT serving voluntarily, so the idea of an all-volunteer military is passe. I participate in anti-war rallies each Friday; when I talk to people who disagree with us, almost inevitably three things become clear: (1) they have no answer when I ask them what we will win in either Iraq or Afghanistan, (2) they have no one in their family serving overseas, and (3) they have NO intention whatsoever of serving themselves. My question is this: where better to voice opinions than in an Independence Day parade? To quote Henry David Thoreau: Civil disobedience is not a RIGHT, its a DUTY. Do we not realize as a people that blindly following our leaders and never speaking out against atrocities would have made us great citizens of Nazi Germany? This country was originally formed by a group of people who rose up against oppression and created something we can be proud of. Lets not let politics and greed ruin it. The struggle for peace will continue as long as young men and women are being killed in a war that seemingly has no end, and people who want the killing to stop should maintain as public a vigil as possible until that time comes. Parading our freedom

Dear Editor: There were two very perplexing letters in the July 7th edition of the COURIER complaining about the marriage equality and anti-war groups in the Fourth of July parade. They both suggest it is political to be against a war, but not to be for a war. Both positions are equally political. Moreover, it is extremely political (not to mention un-American) to say that certain citizens of the country we claim to be honoring should be kept out of a parade celebrating freedom because of their political beliefs. Christine Liles wants the parade to celebrate the people fighting for our freedoms. We agree. But while we do not see how drone attacks in Afghanistan or the invasion and occupation of Iraq measurably increase our freedom, it is obvious that those fighting for the civil rights of all citizens (including the right to marry the person you love) are directly contributing to the expansion of freedom here in the U.S. Ms. Liles is free to organize a group honoring the military to march in next years parade. If she does, we hope she will keep in mind that some of the men and women in the military are gay and lesbian, and are therefore not free to marry the persons they love, or even be honest about who they are. As for Kerry Hemingers point that we should celebrate the country, but not the freedom of speech enshrined in the countrys constitution, that is simply baffling. A parade is a form of speech, and a Fourth of July parade that is not about freedom would be pointless.

Search for missing dog has a happy ending
ot everyone in Claremont enjoyed the festivities on the Fourth of July.
Luc, a 10-year old black lab owned by resident Suzanne Hall, mysteriously disappeared during the holiday, sparking a citywide search by his family and outpouring of support from the community. Spooked by the fireworks, Luc hopped over a short fence in the Halls front yard and wandered off. His family spent the rest of the day searching for their missing pet, but Luc was nowhere to be found. Ms. Hall and her family live on 12th Street and Indian Hill Boulevard. The friendly dog is well known by pedestrians walking by the home as he leans against their white picket fence to greet them. His disappearing act was hardly an isolated incident on the Fourth of July, said Brian Sampson, Director of Animal Services at the Inland Valley Humane Society. We are very busy the week or so after New Years and the Fourth of July, both notorious holidays for fireworks, he said. Many dogs are afraid of the loud noises and bright lights caused by the fireworks, Mr. Sampson said. If not properly attended to, some will run away from home or injure themselves trying to flee. They can dig through fences, jump over fences and hang themselves with their leashes or break through windows and cut themselves. As for Luc, the search effort continued into the night. Ms. Hall was hoping for a phone call from someone whod found him but it never came. We started to get really worried, she said. The following morning at 6 a.m., daughter Laura Corhan and her father walked the neighborhood again, asking people along the way if theyd seen Luc. Meanwhile, Ms. Hall started a Facebook and email campaign to locate Luc and printed out flyers to post around town. Both friends and strangers pitched in to help in the search effort, Ms. Hall said. Whats really sweet about all this was it was a reminder that people will come out of the woodworks and band together to help solve a problem, Ms. Hall said.

Across the street, neighbor Conrad Casler was unaware of the search for the missing dog. He soon found out when his houseguest emerged from the garage and told him there was a dog in the back seat of his car. He was wagging his tail as happy as could be, Mr. Casler said. Luc was given some water by Mr. Casler, who found his identity tag on his collar. After about 24 hours of being missing, Luc was finally returned home. Mr. Casler explained that he parked his Toyota Prius on the street the day before and accidently left the passenger window open. Luc must have jumped into the vehicle before he pulled it into his garage for the night.
Pet owners who know their pets are afraid of fireworks should be as prepared as possible ahead of the holidays, Mr. Sampson said. He recommended staying home with their pets, keeping them in a quiet and calm environment or giving them a sedative provided by animal hospitals. Always put ID tags on them, Mr. Sampson said. If they get out and end up at a shelter, they are held for 10 day with ID tags. Without tags, they are only held for 72 hours.

Residency rates hot button issue for field usage
t looked more like a soccer tournament than a city meeting. Soccer parents, coaches and dozens of kids wearing blue jerseys, all packed into the city council chambers.
But the representatives from the Foothill Storm club soccer league were not there for a game. They spent Wednesday night at city hall to take on the city after hearing about a new fee structure for use of playing fields in Claremont. The Human Services Commission was discussing several recommendations from the city that would directly impact sports teams like those in the Foothill Storm league. Number one on the list was a proposal to raise the residency requirement rate on teams from 51 to 75 percent. Under the new system, teams with less than 75 percent of players living in the city or attending Claremont schools would be forced to pay hourly fees for the use of sports fields in Claremont. For Foothill Storm teams, which currently have an average of 56 percent residency rate, the new rental fee would simply be too high. This would have a tremendously negative impact on our club, said Brain Dorman, President of the Foothill Storm. It would force some of our teams to practice outside of Claremont, or even worse, disband

altogether. Only 3 of the 14 Foothill Storm league teams have a residency rate of 75 percent or more, Mr. Dorman said. But all of them abide by the current standard of 51 percent or higher. The rest would be forced to pay the hourly field rental fee plus another fee for lighting the fields. The discussed rental rate for the field was $25 per hour. On top of that, teams would be required to pay and additional $15 per hour to light the fields. City staff said the rates were not set in stone. The debate came after the city commissioned a report to assess todays needs of their public facilities. Sports fields are deteriorating due to overuse and some need new infrastructure such as sprinkler systems.
The city already spends $60,000 per year on citywide field maintenance and another $30,000 per year on irrigation, said Mercy Santoro, Director of the Human Services Department. The report noted that most surrounding cities also have residency rate requirements for their sports teams at 75 percent or higher. Pomonas requirements are at 90 percent. Still, a stream of parents and coaches addressed the commission to say the new requirement would force parents to pull their kids from the teams due to high costs. Parent Kevin ORiley said the new residency rate would be discriminatory toward outsiders and create an elitist atmosphere in the city. In the end, the commission voted to have the Youth Sports Committee reconsider the 75 percent requirement in the face of such strong opposition. The decision was met by loud applause from the Foothill Storm dominated audience. Several other recommendations were approved by the commission. They included implementing a new banner program, establishing a schedule for field down time and identifying future priorities for field lighting such as at Griffith Park. The city council will have the final decision on the matter and will discuss the changes after the summer break.

Monday, July 5 A home was broken into at 3:20 a.m. by a man suffering from schizophrenia and having delusions. A resident living in the 300 block of Geneva Avenue awoke to the sound of broken glass and got up to investigate. A man had broken a window to a front bedroom and began to climb inside. In doing so, the man cut his arm on the broken glass and was bleeding profusely. The homeowner attempted to trap the man in the bedroom by holding the door closed. But the unwanted visitor overpowered the resident and broke down the door. He began to chase the resident through the house and out into the front yard. Meanwhile, the mans family had taken refuge from the danger by hiding in the backyard. As the resident ran into the street, he yelled for help and headed towards a neighbors house. The man chasing him suddenly stopped in the middle of the street only to lay down on the ground. A neighbor hearing the commotion outside called police to report what was happening. When police arrived, they found the disturbed man on the ground and took him into custody. Robert Murray, 26, of Colton, was arrested for burglary. He was transported to the Los Angeles County Inmate Reception Center where he was treated for his injuries and given a psychological evaluation. He reportedly was suffering from schizophrenia and believed that
people were trying to kill him. Police are unsure what he was doing in the area. *** Police believe the suspect involved in last weeks high speed police chase had committed a burglary in Claremont just prior to the pursuit. Last Tuesday morning, Brett Fagan, 25, of Covina sped away from police in a stolen BMW, causing an accident that killed one man and injured another. In the stolen car, police found a GPS navigation system belonging to a resident living in the 100 block of Miramar Avenue. The resident parked his car in an open garage and did not lock the vehicle. He later found the car door ajar and the GPS device missing but did not report it to police. The device was returned to its owner. Wednesday, July 7 A resident helped a police investigation by taking a photo of a suspicious vehicles license plate and turning it over to police. Around 11:54 a.m., a burglar entered a home on the 100 block of Windham Drive by opening an unlocked rear sliding door. The homeowner returned to the house while the burglary was in progress, causing the burglar to flee. Some jewelry was reported missing. A nearby resident noticed a suspicious vehicle in the neighborhood and a man wearing a black leather jacket and black sweatshirt walking in the street. Thinking the man looked out of place, the res-

Fight ensues after couple interrupted on couch
On Sunday, July 4 police were called to break up a fight at a home on the 200 block of East Arrow Highway. The homeowners were trying to remove a tenant on the property although she was evicted several weeks ago. The woman was reportedly having sex with her boyfriend on a couch when the conflict began. When the homeowner attempted to ident walked by his vehicle and took a photo of the license plate using his cell phone. When police later descended upon the area after the crime was reported, the neighbor turned over the photo to police. Police discovered that the black Mercury Mountaineer had been reported stolen out of Indio and subsequently sent out a notice about the vehicle to neighboring law enforcement agencies. The following day, the vehicle was located in Montclair and pulled over. The driver was not the same man involved in the Claremont burglary but was arrested for possession of stolen property. Police are still searching for the burglar, who is deremove the woman and her boyfriend, a fight ensued. Punches were thrown by both parties and the evicted woman needed to be treated for a cut on her lip. Police determined she was under the influence of alcohol. Inside one of the mens cars were a mirror and a light fixture taken from the home. Robin Chaplin, 43, of Chino Hills and Robert Long, 45, of Pomona were arrested for burglary and held for bail. Mr. Long was also booked for an outstanding warrant.

Claremont erased an 8-2 deficit in the 1st inning to take a 12-11 lead in the 6th inning, but Andrew Garcias 2-run homer in the bottom of the 6th brought Claremonts hopes of victory to a halt as San Dimas clinched a 13-12 win at La Vernes Pelota Park. Theyve [San Dimas] been a cross-district rival for us, said Claremont coach Paul Cooper. Theyre a good team and well coached. Our kids kept the intensity level up even when we were down by 5 runs. The kids didnt give up and we played really well. Del Campos 2-run blast in the top of the first inning put Claremont on the board early with a 2-0 lead. But Claremonts lead quickly evaporated as San Dimas responded with 8 runs in the bottom half of the inning. Claremont starting pitcher Tyler Roebuck threw 35 pitches and gave up 5 runs before being subbed out for Cody Smith. Claremont added 2 runs in the 2nd inning off RBI singles by Trent Troncone and Roebuck. The 11-12 Year-Old All-Star squad recorded 5 consecutive singles in the inning. Our hitting was a factor [in the game] and so was our scoring, Roebuck said. One thing thats important is scoring and I think we gave it our all. Ricky Conti came in relief for Smith in the 2nd inning and held San Dimas to just 3 runs through the 5th. The stability on the mound allowed Claremont to mount a comeback from the plate as the squad scored 2 runs in the 3rd inning and added 3 more runs in the 4th. Del Campos 3-run shot over the right field fence tied the game at 9-9 before San Dimas responded with 2 more runs of its own. Down 11-9 after 5 innings of play, Claremont made one final push with the bat in the top of the 6th inning. Parker Bowmans double to right field brought home Nathan Keeler and Del Campo to tie the game at 1111. Smiths singled in Bowman just 2 batters later to give Claremont a 12-11 heading to the bottom of the 6th. But 3 San Dimas batters and an Andrew Garcia homerun later, the game was suddenly over. Tallying up travel experiences

n my recent trip I did a great deal of things, visited quite a few countries visited many friends and traveled by various means. I began to play with a form of list making to get an idea of just what I had been doing. The result is a different way of looking at the past 6 weeks of a summer trip to Europe.
To begin with I visited a total of 5 countries in 6 weeks. Three, England, Italy and Greece had been planned spots before I left. Two, Holland and Sweden were spontaneous choices because I wanted to be flexible and be ready for any changes which could come up and eventually did. Of the 5 places I visited, I chose to go back to London a second time and extend my visit and this was rather unexpected as well. I loved my choices of countries. I chose each for the people there and for past experiences I had had and for the differences of each. I also experienced things differently in each place. London, England was mostly for friends. Amsterdam, Holland was for exploration and enjoyment of the city. I went to a place in Italy where I had never been before and spent an intensive week with a small group of people exploring the arts in a workshop setting. Greece was a trip back into the past for me, revisiting 2 islands where I had spent a good many years of my life. In Sweden I stayed with good friends in the countryside and experienced the intensity of a Swedish summer which is short lived with extremely long nights of sun and an intense growing season. I traveled on 7 plane flights. Four flights were reserved and paid for in advance and 3 were made at the moment I decided to move on; 2 by computer and one at the airport. The 3 unplanned trips may have cost a bit more money but they afforded me the flexibility I needed and wanted at the time. I am glad I arranged things in that way. I took 3 train rides, a rather long one in Italy from Pisa to Rome and a shorter one from Rome to the airport and a round trip series of trains from the center of Sweden to Stockholm and back. I love trains. I love staring out the windows at the passing scenery and imagining what life is like on the outside. I went to the 2 Greek islands on 2 large ferry boat catamarans, called the cats which was far more comfortable than I remembered from my past years on ferries but did not allow for any seating outside which I always preferred for sea travel. I rode on many buses, metros or undergrounds and
trams. I took 2 actual taxis and numerous minicabs (pre ordered taxis). I also boarded 3 coach buses for long distance bus rides in Greece. I also walked a lot. I explored city areas by foot. I went to local shops, to museums, to archaeological sites, and to friends houses, all by on foot. I visited 5 museums and art exhibits as well as 6 antique fairs, markets, and car boot sales to add to my collection for my art work. I stayed in 6 different hotel rooms for a total of 14 nights and rented a flat for a total of 14 nights. The rest of the time I spent in the homes of 3 friends. The highlight of the trip was visiting friends. I visited a total of 19 friends over the 6-week period. Ten were in England, one in Italy, 5 in Greece and 3 in Sweden. That does not count the numerous new friends I made during the time as well. This may seem like a strange way to divide up a trip into small parts rather than seeing it as a whole, rich experience. Of course it was a wonderful time in which I was held in suspension from the realities of my life at home. I floated through lazy days, days filled with new places and faces, choices and changes that called for quick thinking and flexibility and the comfort of being with beloved friends. Still it is rather amazing when slicing up the pie to see just how much I did do in a rather short time. It was a rewarding time and as soon as I unpacked and put the bags back in the storage space I began to fantasize just where I will go for my next trip. That is a mark of a successful journey.

City council to confer on 7-Eleven at council meeting

The city council will meet on Tuesday night for their first meeting in July. In the closed session, the council will discuss salary negotiations with the Claremont Police Management Association and the Claremont Police Officers Association. A second closed session item is a potential litigation from Kiran SE Corporation, the group that attempted to open a 7-Eleven at Foothill Boulevard and Mills Avenue. In the open session, beginning at 6:30 p.m., the council will be reviewing a request for marked crosswalks on Mountain Avenue, between Foothill Boulevard and Harrison Avenue. They will also hear reports on in-lieu parking fees for business owners and the organization of the Community Services Department.

Darrow wins Emmy for collaborative work

Long-time Claremonter Chris Darrow, with his writing partner Shannon Hart-Reed, won an Emmy in the Special Event Coverage (other than news or sports) category at the North-West Regional Emmys. Mr. Darrow was the co-writer and performer for the documentary short titled Kites Over Washington. Ms. Hart-Reed directed the documentary short and was the co-writer of the lyrics for the score. The documentary details a temporary art installation of 131 long-tail kites that flew over Gasworks Park as a promotional video for Credit Unions of Washington.

Hope G. Waingrow
English teacher, COURIER reporter, politics buff, spirited entertainer
Hope Graff Waingrow, a 20-year reporter for the COURIER in the 60s and 70s, died on June 13, 2010 in Concord, Massachusetts. A longtime resident of Edgartown, Massachusetts on the island of Marthas Vineyard, Ms. Waingrow was 84. Ms. Waingrow was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on February 17, 1926 to Laura Elisabeth Ellis Graff and Judge J. Frank Graff of Kittanning, Pennsylvania. She spent her childhood in Kittanning, Georgia and New York City. Following graduation from Cornell University where she majored in English literature, she earned a masters degree in English from Pennsylvania State University. She worked first as a legal secretary and then for a professor at Yale University, writing and editing an index for his research. She went on to teach English and reading at the junior high, high school and college levels in New Haven, Connecticut and in Claremont, where she resided for 22 years. In 1961, she was hired as a reporter for the Claremont COURIER, a job that she loved and worked at for 2 decades. Working on the COURIER was the best job of her life and gave her so much pleasure, said her daughter, Ellis Waingrow. She loved researching issues and interviewing such a wide variety of people. Peter Weinberger, COURIER editor and publisher and son of longtime COURIER owners Martin and Janis Weinberger, recalls making pizza for Ms. Waingrow and the rest of the COURIER crew as a child of 8 or 9, cooking it in a Frustrated by the narrow roles for women in the 50s, Ms. Waingrow always worked outside of the home. She was exceptionally encouraging of her children finding work that they would love passionately. She was a single, divorced parent but went to great effort to support her childrens interests in art, flying, music, community service or whatever each of them felt passionate about. In 1982, Ms. Waingrow moved to Marthas Vineyard to be closer to her children who were living on the East coast at the time. She was drawn to the small town culture and the beauty of the island. She wrote an essay about the colors and light in Marthas Vineyard, and it was published in the local newspaper. Because she loved small town politics, Ms. Waingrow pursued work for the town of Edgartown, Massachusetts as secretary to the town clerk, assistant to the Zoning Board of Appeals and secretary for the selectmen. She was dedicated to her work at Town Hall and delighted in keeping up with the political and social affairs of the town. She continued to work until she turned 84 when a number of medical problems interfered. In honor of her contribution as a devoted employee, the town of Edgartown flew its American flag at half-mast for 3 days following her death. In both Claremont and Marthas Vineyard, Ms. Waingrow was an active member of AA, proud of her sobriety and loving the fellowship of fellow members, shared her family. In her drinking and smoking days, she was always seen with a glass in hand and a cigarette nestled into a long holder, laughing and entertaining friends with gossip and funny stories. Ms. Waingrow loved good food and was known as a great cook whose home was always open to friends who would frequently drop by for a delicious meal but also for her characteristic humor and wit. Her cooking skills were passed down to all of her children and many of their friends, one of whom said, Your mother never minded when we blew up the kitchen. She taught me what great food was. Her home was a home away from home for many friends who needed a good ear, a place to sleep and a scrumptious meal. A voracious reader, Ms. Waingrows passion for reading fiction and nonfiction and for learning about politics and the social issues of the times educated and entertained friends and family alike. She also loved animals and always had at least one petcat or dog or bothto dote on. They were like children to her and she was known to nurse a couple of kittens back to health with Marthas Vineyard bay scallops and cream. She also enjoyed gardening and was particularly fond of her roses in Claremont, her herb garden in Marthas Vineyard and the meadow that she cultivated behind her East coast house. Her children continue her legacy with a love of cooking and good food, gardening, pets and reading. Ms. Waingrow is survived by her daughters, Elisabeth Ellis Waingrow of Newton, Massachusetts and Emily Hope Waingrow Falke of Santa Barbara; by her son and daughter-in-law, Daniel Graff Waingrow and Debora Waingrow of Seattle, Washington; her 7 grandchildren; her brother and sister-in-law, Peter Graff IV and Nancy Graff of Kittanning, Pennsylvania; and by several cousins, 3 nieces and a nephew. She was predeceased by her sister, Laura Graff McIlwain, in 1979; and by her former husband, Marshall Waingrow, in 2007. A private service and burial will take place in Worthington, Pennsylvania on July 17, 2010. A memorial gathering will be held at the Town Hall in Edgartown sometime in August. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Edgartown Free Public Library, 58 N. Water St., Edgartown, MA 02539; to the Crohns and Colitis Foundation of America, www.ccfa.org; or to an animal rescue or shelter of choice.

Ms. Waingrow especially loved covering politics, both local and national, and one of her most memorable moments was meeting Bobby Kennedy when he was campaigning in California. Raised as a Republican, Ms. Waingrow switched to being a Democrat after the Eisenhower election. Despite a passion for the causes that were embraced by liberal Democrats, she was particularly known for fair and accurate reporting without bias. When she was not writing for the newspaper, she was writing short stories, family histories and the letters that made her so famous among friends and family.

oung promising chefs ages 6 through 14 are creating their own cuisines and desserts courtesy of the Young Chefs Academy.
Holding its Camp Can-I-Cook through August 20th, the academy is exploring a wide range of different foods in order to give kids a fun alternative during the summer. The young chefs-intraining have fixed Italian entrees and chocolate treats for the past 2 weeks. I liked making lasagna, said 12year-old Nicholas Criscione. This class is very interactive and very fun. You can learn while youre having fun. Though 10-year-old Kim Carter did not participate during the Italian-themed week, she has been excited about this weeks chocolate theme. I wanted to do Italian but I missed it, she said. But I really liked the chocolate silk pie that we made on Monday. We made the pie crust ourselves. Julie Burleson and Suzy Netties established Young Chefs Academy in April 2003 to offer cooking classes to children in a safe environment that encourages discovery and creativity. The Claremont location inside the Packing House opened in November 2007. The academy also holds classes year round beyond its summer program. Regardless of whether students enroll in its main program or summer program, the organization seeks to provide its clients with a unique experience. Were doing some new things, some fun things, said Young Chefs Academy teacher Leslie Sassaman. We want to empower the kids and give a lot of responsibility to them. We want them to try new things.

One of the 3-hour sessions last week featured lasagna with Bolognese meat sauce and Salame al Cioccolato. Each of the 7 students in attendance contributed to each of the entrees while also making their own serving. From mincing garlic, thyme, onions, carrots, tomatoes and cheese to working dough made of flour and eggs through a pasta machine, the students worked nonstop through the duration of the class. Twelve-year-old Brooke Schaefer hopes the techniques she learns will help her in her future endeavor to be a chef. On Tuesday, she made chocolate taffy by using techniques such as separating egg yolk from egg white, sifting powdered sugar into the mixture and pulling the taffy until it had a shiny coat. I really enjoy cooking and I want to be a chef when I am older, Brooke said. My mom wanted me in the class so I
could learn. I really enjoy chocolate and I like to bake. Though the Young Chefs Academy summer camp runs through August, the organization also accepts one-day registration as well for $50 per day. Donald Paul Smedley, who grew up in Claremont, died of complications from pneumonia on December 11, 2009 in his room at the St. George Hotel in Los Angeles. He was 48. Born on May 19, 1961 at Pomona Valley Hospital, Mr. Smedley attended Sumner Elementary School, El Roble Intermediate School, Foothill Country Day School, Webb School and Claremont High School. Following high school graduation, he attended Mt. San Antonio Community College. Mr. Smedley worked in the roofing industry and studied to become a computer technician. Family reported that his roofing contractor described him as a mechanical genius. When not working, Mr. Smedley enjoyed having coffee at Starbucks in the Claremont Village. A loving and caring family man, he helped take care of his elderly grandmother, Ella Mae Fincher Walker, for a period before her death. His sister, Charla Lawson, mentioned that he was a very special brother. Mr. Smedley is survived by his mother, Charlsey Mae Smedley of Orlando, Florida; his sister and brother-in-law, Charla and Jon Lawson of Orlando; his nieces, Devin and Nicole Lawson of Orlando; his nephew, Matthew Lawson of Orlando; his aunt and uncle, Jim and La Vern Smedley of Smithville, Oklahoma; his cousins, Ken Smedley of Spiro, Oklahoma, Joe Smedley of Smithville, Oklahoma, Kathy Rowland of Corpus Christi, Texas and Timi Frazier and her husband, Matthew Frazier, of Garland, Texas, and their 2 daughters, Lizzie and Lilly. He was predeceased by his grandparents, Ben Smedley, Phyllis Smedley, Paul Fincher and Ella Mae Fincher Walker; his father, Donald Ben Smedley; and his uncle, James Fincher. A memorial service was held on January 6, 2010 at the St. George Hotel, and a family service was held at Oaklawn Cemetery in Poteau, Oklahoma in March.

NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING ON PROPOSED CHANGE TO CLAREMONT MUNICIPAL CODE REGARDING REVISION TO PARKING IN INSTITUTIONAL EDUCATIONAL DISTRICT
The Claremont Planning Commission will hold a public hearing regarding a modification to the Municipal Code Chapter 16.069.090 adding section that reduces required parking for colleges that restrict entire academic year classes from bringing cars to campus. The ordinance adds the following language to the above referenced Municipal Code Section as follows: F. When an Education-College Institution has an officially adopted internal policy/practice that prohibits an academic year class (e.g. freshman, sophomore, etc.) from bringing and keeping motor vehicles on campus, the Community Development Director shall reduce the student generated parking requirement by twenty percent (20%) for each academic year class that is restricted from bringing cars to campus, with a maximum permitted reduction of 40 percent. The institution shall submit to the Director of Community Development the measures that are in-place at the institution to enforce such a policy. Existing sub-sections F & G would then be renumbered to be sub-sections G and H to provide for this new section. Pilgrim Place, founded in 1915, is a community of retired missionaries, clergy and non-profit professionals in Claremont. The more than 300 residents are concerned with social justice, world peace, environmentalism and
ongoing intellectual, spiritual and social growth. The role of seniors in our communities is changing faster than ever, added Mr. Cunitz. They are living longer and staying healthy to a much older age. They want to be active. As a board, it is our responsibility to be able to give our residents the tools they want and require in their retirement. Pilgrim Place is in the midst of a $26 million construction project that will provide new administration offices and more independent-living and assisted-living residences. When these buildings are completed, they will qualify for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified structures. LEED is a nationally recognized program which sets guidelines and standards for building structures that are environmentally sensitive and sustainable. These are issues and decisions where the board was very proactive in working with staff and residents, said Mr. Cunitz.
