SENTENCE: Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts; let the word of Christ dwell in you richly. Colossians 3.15, 16 THE COLLECT: Lord, you have taught us that all our doings without love are nothing worth: send your Holy Spirit and pour into our hearts that most excellent gift of love, the true bond of peace and of all virtues, without which whoever lives is counted dead before you. Grant this for your only Son Jesus Christ's sake, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

FIRST READING

1 Kings 17. 8-24

A reading from the first book of Kings Then the word of the Lord came to him: Go at once to Zarephath in the region of Sidon and stay there. I have instructed a widow there to supply you with food. So he went to Zarephath. When he came to the town gate, a widow was there gathering sticks. He called to her and asked, Would you bring me a little water in a jar so I may have a drink? As she was going to get it, he called, And bring me, please, a piece of bread. As surely as the Lord your God lives, she replied, I dont have any bread only a handful of flour in a jar and a little olive oil in a jug. I am gathering a few sticks to take home and make a meal for myself and my son, that we may eat it and die. Elijah said to her, Dont be afraid. Go home and do as you have said. But first make a small loaf of bread for me from what you have and bring it to me, and then make something for yourself and your son. For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the Lord sends rain on the land. She went away and did as Elijah had told her. So there was food every day for Elijah and for the woman and her family. For the jar of flour was not used up and the jug of oil did not run dry, in keeping with the word of the Lord spoken by Elijah. Some time later the son of the woman who owned the house became ill. He grew worse and worse, and finally stopped breathing. She said to Elijah, What do you have against me, man of God? Did you come to remind me of my sin and kill my son? Give me your son, Elijah replied. He took him from her arms, carried him to the upper room where he was staying, and laid him on his bed. Then he cried out to the Lord, Lord my God, have you brought tragedy even on this widow I am staying with, by causing her son to die? Then he stretched himself out on the boy three times and cried out to the Lord, Lord my God, let this boys life return to him! The Lord heard Elijahs cry, and the boys life returned to him, and he lived. Elijah picked up the child and carried him down from the room into the house. He gave him to his mother and said, Look, your son is alive! Then the woman said to Elijah, Now I know that you are a man of God and that the word of the Lord from your mouth is the truth. Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church. Thanks be to God. Psalm 146

RESPONSORIAL PSALM Response: I will praise the Lord as long as I live.

Praise the Lord, O my soul: while I live will I praise the Lord; as long as I have any being, I will sing praises to my God...........................................................R Put not your trust in princes, nor in any human power, for there is no help in them. When their breath goes forth, they return to the earth; on that day all their thoughts perish................................................R Happy are those who have the God of Jacob for their help, whose hope is in the Lord their God; Who made heaven and earth, the sea and all that is in them; who keeps his promise for ever; .......................................................R Who gives justice to those that suffer wrong and bread to those who hunger. The Lord looses those that are bound; the Lord opens the eyes of the blind;................................................R The Lord lifts up those who are bowed down; the Lord loves the righteous; The Lord watches over the stranger in the land; he upholds the orphan and widow; but the way of the wicked he turns upside down. The Lord shall reign for ever, your God, O Zion, throughout all generations................................R SECOND READING Galatians 1. 11-24

A reading from Pauls letter to the Galatians Brothers and sisters, I want you to know that the gospel I preached isnt human in origin. I didnt receive it or learn it from a human. It came through a revelation from Jesus Christ. You heard about my previous life in Judaism, how severely I harassed Gods church and tried to destroy it. I advanced in Judaism beyond many of my peers, because I was much more militant about the traditions of my ancestors. But God had set me apart from birth and called me through his grace. He was pleased to reveal his Son to me, so that I might preach about him to the Gentiles. I didnt immediately consult with any human being. I didnt go up to Jerusalem to see the men who were apostles before me either, but I went away into Arabia and I returned again to Damascus. Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to visit Cephas and stayed with him fifteen days. But I didnt see any other of the apostles except James the brother of the Lord. Before God, Im not

lying about the things that Im writing to you! Then I went into the regions of Syria and Cilicia, but I wasnt known personally by the Christian churches in Judea. They only heard a report about me: The man who used to harass us now preaches the faith that he once tried to destroy. So they were glorifying God because of me. Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! A great prophet has ris- | en among us! God has looked favora- | bly on us! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! GOSPEL A reading from the holy gospel according to Luke Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went along with him. As he approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her. When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, Dont cry. Then he went up and touched the bier they were carrying him on, and the bearers stood still. He said, Young man, I say to you, get up! The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother. They were all filled with awe and praised God. A great prophet has appeared among us, they said. God has come to help his people. This news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the surrounding country. For the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. In both the Old Testament and the Gospel readings widows and sons, who end up dead, powerful prophets namely Elijah and Jesus, and of course the crowds frame the drama. It is most likely that Lukes passage was heavily influenced by the story from I Kings. At the heart of both stories is the concept of compassion, and the word used in Greek means to suffer with. So this is more than feeling sorry or having pity but a real identification with plight of the one who suffers. The emphasis in the story in Luke was on Jesus compassion for the widow, not on his power to raise the dead. It exhibited Jesus gracious concern for the most vulnerable and helpless. By touching the bier, he exposed himself to contamination according to traditional Jewish holiness code. At the same time, he demonstrated that liturgical purity yields to the higher law of mercy. It is noteworthy that Jesus final action of giving the resuscitated man to his mother repeats the exact words of 1 Kings 17:23. There is no doubt the early church had strong convictions that Jesus did return to life those whom others had declared dead, for Jesus is the source of life, as Luke forcefully asserted in this pericope. So also should we be making the same assertion today. While the story as Luke told it may cause scepticism to modern minds, there are significant values for our time to be found in his brief narrative of the miracle. To see the relevance of this pericope, we need only think of the contrast between governmental spending on weapons of war and that spent on education, health and alleviation of poverty in many nations, and how foreign governments have responded to the financial crisis in Europe and North America. And in our own backyard the political response to asylum seekers and the plight of our indigenous people is salutary. Jesus did not offer political or economic solutions to modern problems. He did, however, give us insight into Gods way of dealing with human misery

and distress with endless and uncompromising compassion and kindness, that paid no heed to religious and political niceties.
