Puzikas' Rifle Recoil table: A comprehensive look at rifles and their recoil energy for Nation States.

Special thanks to members of MMW 10

What is Recoil Impulse? Recoil Impulse (R.I.) is the change in momentum of a firearm. More commonly called recoil, R.I describes the felt impulse to an operator of the firearm after firing a round. This is due to what is known as Newton's third Law, "For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction". Why is Recoil Impulse important? Recoil Impulse can make or break any small arms engagement. The lower the recoil, the less likely a soldier is to be fatigued, and indeed the more accurate a rifle will be in the hands of the soldier during rapid fire. How is Recoil Impulse measured? Recoil Impulse is measured in units of energy, most commonly Joules and Foot Pounds. For this, the unit Joules will be used. The normal shooter finds a recoil energy of 16.950 joules to be about the maximal comfort level of recoil, meaning any more is typically considered extraneous to the average shooter and likely to cause an increased fatigue. I dont see my round on here, How can I get it in? Follow the link supplied below and send me (Puzikas) a telegram with your rounds name, the weight of the bullet, the operating pressure, the average rifle weight, and its velocity.

Why not use a uniform rifle weight for this chart? The main idea was to give members of the Main Military Weapon thread a simple idea of recoil impulse in their weapons, and added real-world weapons for a comparison. A uniform weight would also create an irregular amount of recoil in some rounds, such as the 12.7 and 14.5 caliber rounds on the chart. Will this list include, at any point, pistols? Yes, a pistol caliber recoil chart is in progress as we speak. Why are pistol calibers listed on here? Submachine guns
