2012 Our Journey

Our Journey
The Rev. David M. Rider, President & Executive Director

As an Institute, SCIs 2012 journey took us in diverse and creative directions. Our Law & Advocacy team published landmark Guidelines for the medical and mental healthcare of seafarers after extreme conditions of captivity by pirates. These Guidelines embody SCIs century-long advocacy for seafarer welfare and dignity. We underpin our advocacy work with our daily ship visits in Port Newark and Oakland, serving one seafarer at a time to hear their unique stories andneeds. This same synergy comes when our Ministry on the Rivers and Gulf chaplains work with Center for Maritime Education instructors to support and train

Americas inland merchant mariners. On our best days, SCI strengthens the navigational and leadership skills of towboat pilots; on our most challenging days, we respond to fatalities and injuries that remain a reality of river work. SCI trustees worked faithfully to strengthen our governance and temporal life, implementing an exciting new Strategic Plan, while we launched a robust new website and relocated our Headquarters to 74 Trinity Placecontinuing our tradition of service near the New York Harbor waters of LowerManhattan. Speaking of the Harbor, SCI will long remember the challenges that impacted our maritime community after

Octobers Superstorm Sandy. More than the surge that damaged our Port Newark facility, however, I will never forget the perseverance of port workers to reopen the Port within a week. Although without electricity and still a little damp, we served the first ships arriving in port six days after the storm. In this Annual Report, find details of these and other great stories from the journey both you and I have ventured together as supporters of the maritime workforce in 2012. Thanks for all you do to make these storiesremarkable talesof camaraderie and servicepossible.

Presentation Addresses Seafarer Care SCI presented an update on its clinical study of the effects of piracy on seafarers mental health to Working Group 3 of the Contact Group on Piracy off the Coast of Somalia at the State Department in Washington, DC, emphasizing the importance of caring for those impacted by piracy on the high seas.

Photography Contest for Mariners The maritime workplace contains beauty few ever see huge, powerful vessels transiting vast waterways transporting unimaginable amounts of goods. Calling for submissions to a new maritime photography contest called An Insiders View, SCI asked maritime industry employees to show off art in everyday life, something in the maritime workplace that people outside the industry might never see.

Seafarer Voices: PiracyontheHigh Seas What happens to seafarers, held often for months on end, after release from a hijacking? Their untold stories comprise part of SCIs new video interview series published on YouTube, giving voice to seafarers held captive by pirates. View videos at http://smschur.ch/seafarervoices

Applauding the Work of Chaplain Jacques On April 2, members of the port community along with clergy from local dioceses and friends of the Institute assembled for a Eucharist in thanksgiving for the Rev. Deacon Jacques Girards work at SCI. After 12 years as a full-time chaplain at SCIs Port Newark International Seafarers Center, Girard retired from portministry.

Maritime Education Mile Markers E-Learning Partnership In May, SCIs Center for Maritime Education announced a partnership with a digital publishing company to provide e-learning resources. SCIs new catalog of web courses help maritime transportation companies implement new training schemes, while matching the lifestyles of busy industry professionals. SCIs relationships have grown with thousands of encounters with mariners. In 2012, SCI celebrated 15 years in Paducah, KY, and welcomed its 6000th mariner for training at its Houston, TX Center.

Hurricane Sandys Impact on Seafarers Center in Port Newark New Tool in Mariner Assessments SCI completed construction of a simulator tailored for oneon-one mariner skill appraisal. SCIs new Houston simulator manufactured by Transas provides a dedicated tool for assessments, corrective action implementation and company human resource evaluations. As the largest Atlantic hurricane on record crossed the ocean, it laid waste to hundreds of land miles in the Caribbean, Mid-Atlantic, northeastern United States and eastern Canada. Among those affected by the storm, SCIs International Seafarers Center in Port Newark sustained significant damage. Although crippled by the storm, SCI continued reaching out to seafarers needing its services. Watch chaplains tell of afterstorm care at http://smschur.ch/ afterstormcare

Supporters Cruise San Francisco Harbor Surrounded by Americas Cup racing yachts, streaking Blue Angels jets and battleships in harbor for Fleet Week, 110 SCIBay Area donors enjoyed a Sunset Cruise past the Golden Gate Bridge on the California Hornblower on Thursday, October 4. Proceeds from the event benefited outreach to international seafarers at SCIs International Maritime Center.

On Monday, November 5, SCI-Port Newark resumed operations after a weeks closure due to Hurricane Sandy. With another storm on its way, SCI staff rushed to move Christmas at Sea gifts out of the flood-prone first floor and onto higher ground. They got help from crew members of the CSCL Vancouver, who gave up precious shore leave time to make sure others Christmas gifts stayed dry. (Dont worrythey received their own holiday packages, too!)

Emergency preparedness and response procedures were outstanding. I have taken various ship handling courses, but none as well balanced as this one. The instructors, facilities, and program materials were all first class. Edward Welch, LOOP
