Metro Delhi BC 18
India
In July 2005 the international Joint Venture IMCC under the leadership of DYWIDAG International GmbH (Germany), together with Larsen & Toubro (India), Samsung Corporation (Korea), IRCON International (India) and Shimizu Corporation (Japan) finished the construction of a 6.8 km long twin tunnel section with six metro stations underneath the centre of Old and New Delhi. In December 2006 the Joint Venture Metro Tunnelling Group (MTG), consisting of the previously successful IMCC-team, was awarded the contract for the design and construction of another 3.2 km long metro twin tunnel and two underground metro stations with the lengths of 300 and 318 m. One section of tunnels runs between Malaviya Nagar and Hauz Khas stations, another two sections of tunnels connect these stations to the contract boundaries at Green Park & Saket (South). The twin tunnelling sections were built by shield tunnel boring machines, with the first Herrenknecht-TBM having been launched within record-breaking one years time in December 2007. The two parallel tunnel tubes are connected by a total of seven cross passages which serve for emergency evacuation of the passengers in case of an accident in the tunnel. The cross passages were excavated by means of the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM) with a diameter of 4m. The underground stations were planned to be constructed by cut-and-cover method with slotted walls. But whereas the construction of the Hauz Khas station could be executed this way, the method for the second station Malaviya Nagar had to be changed to open cut with anchored soldier pile and lagging walls. The reason was the discovery of an elevated rock head after the award of the contract.
