SECTION 1INTRODUCTION
1.1 GENERAL The CHARPY Impactor is a device widely used to conduct resilience tests on rigid thermoplastic moulding and extrusion materials, rigid thermosetting moulding materials and fibre-reinforced thermosetting and thermoplastic composites, in order to determine their impact fragility characteristics under standard stress conditions. It is made of a robust steel structure, on which the components intended for conduction of the test are mounted. This impactor is certificated that conforms to GB/T 1843, ISO 179-1 and the equivalent. 1.2 TEST PRICIPLE AND MEASURING METHOD The test specimen, supported as a horizontal beam, and is broken by a single impact oscillation of the pendulum, where the line of impact is central to the two supports. The measuring method is based on determining the amount of energy, expressed in Joules, needed to break the specimen under specified conditions, such as: location of the specimen, shapes of the notch and speed of impact of the hammer on the specimen. As the maximum potential energy of the pendulum is known, and is in relation to the weight of the hammer used and the drop height, the latter in turn being in relation to the starting angle, it results that the energy absorbed by the specimen in order to break it can be determined by measuring the hammer rise angle after impact. There are also other parameters that affect this value, such as vibrations of the arm and its structure, friction between the various moving members, aerodynamic friction. In order to make the measurements repeatable, these disturbance factors must be kept under control and to within determined tolerances establishes by the international standards. 1.3 TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS Overall dimensions Apparatus(LDH) : 550300850(mm) Weight Net weight : 152kg

It is important that you should not place your hands or any objects in the coinciding with the hammers trajectory. This testing machine can be used by skilled, trained and authorized personnel only.

the screw cap and its setscrew. There are three kinds of scales on the dial, the inner scale, the outer scale and the angle scale. The back dial could be rotated by hand. We could select impact energy by rotating the back dial. As for XJJ-50 Charpy Impact tester, we should use the outer scale for reading data. For example, if we use 25J hammer to impact specimen, the outer scale of the dial should be located as the following picture(at this moment, the hammer should be free hanging). The passive pointer should be vertical with 0 degree and the max.energy 25 J in the outer scale. Then raise the hammer (at this moment, the pointers should point to 150).

SECTION5PROCEDURE
Conduct the test in the same atmosphere as that used for conditioning, unless otherwise agreed upon by the interested parties, e.g. for testing at high or low temperatures. 5.1 Leveling Adjust the four feet of the instrument till the level bubble is centered. 5.2 Powering on To put the instrument into operation, make a sight check that the instrument and its components are in good condition and in the correct position. Press the Impact Button and check the Hammer stop ratchet is in good condition or not. 5.3 Assembly the hammer Fitting the hammer to the instrument according to 4.3. 5.4 Dial mechanism operation First, choose the outside indicated scale. The energy of the hammer must be conformity with The max. energy point on the dial scale, if not, rotate the back Dial meanwhile zero setting. For example, if we choose 25 J hammer to impact the specimen. The dial display should be set as the following two pictures:

be vertical with the 0 point on the Dial and the two pointers should be closely, if not, you can adjust the active pointer slightly. If too much difference, unscrew the setscrew and the screw cap, adjust the two pointers till they are in perfect relationship. 5.5 CHOOSING THE HAMMER Select the hammer with an appropriate energy value, according to the requirements of the standard being used. Two hammers and two pairs of extra weights are provided. These two pairs of weights must be secured to the two sides of the hammer. Caution: Check that the impact tester is able to perform the test with the specified velocity of impact and that it is in the correct range of absorbed energy W which shall be between 10% and 80% of the available energy at impact, E. If more than one of the pendulums conform to these requirements, the pendulum having the highest energy shall be used. 5.6 CENTRING DEVICE AND ITS USAGE Choose the proper Charpy vise according to the specimen dimension. Then choose the Centring Device according to the charpy vise. Two kinds of Centring Device are supplied which has a numerical sign as the following picture shows:

Centre the vise and the impact edge by the Centring Device as the above picture shows. Take away the Centring Device before installation specimen. 5.7 CHARPY VISE INSTLLATION AND SPECIMEN INSTLLATION Loose the screws of the Block as the 3.2 Vice picture shows. Take away the installed vise and replace it of a new one. Center the vise by the Centring Device and tight the screws. Last Center the vise and impact edge as 5.5 picture shows. Place the prepared specimen, supported as a horizontal beam. 5.8 RELEASE THE HAMMER
XJJ series Charpy Impactor Operation Instructions Ed.1, rev.1 Page 15
When all the above steps are ready a test can be done now. Put the hammer on the Hammer stop Ratchet, meanwhile the two pointers are in its normal starting position, if not, a slight adjustment should be taken by tapping the screw cap gently. You can release the hammer by pressing the Impact Button(As the following picture shows) on the base, or by pressing the release knob located on the top of the apparatus. Then record the dial reading breaking energy for a specimenEc, together with a description of the appearance of the broken specimen.
5.8.1 If the max. energy is more than 5J, the energy absorbed by breaking the test specimen should be calculate as the following formula: Ec=Pd(cos-cos ) Where: Pdthe moment of the hammer (constant) 150 the angle after breaking the specimen by impacting; The energy lost by the friction and air resistance could be neglected. 5.8.2 If the max. energy is less than 5J, the friction and air resistance should not be neglected. The energy absorbed by breaking the test specimen should be calculate as the following formula: Ec=Pd[(cos-cos ) (cos-cos )( +/+)] = E- Pd[(cos-cos )( +/+)]

Where: EcThe energy after correction E-The display data on the dial Pd-- the moment of the hammer (constant) 150 --the elevated angle after idle impact the angle after breaking the specimen by impacting; Note: The tester is designed according to the above principle.
