O Holy Apostle Philip, Intercede with the merciful God That he may grant our souls forgiveness of sins.

Glory to Jesus Christ! Glory for Ever! + Slava Isusu Christu! Slava i vo Viki!

From the Fathers of the Church

St. Mark the Ascetic Pray persistently about everything, and then you will never do anything without Gods help. Prayer comprises the complete fulfillment of the commandments; for there is nothing higher than love for God. Undistracted prayer is a sign of love for God; but careless or distracted prayer is a sign of love for pleasure. He who can without strain keep vigil, be long-suffering and pray is manifestly a partaker of the Holy Spirit. But he who feels strain while doing these things, yet willingly endures it, also quickly receives help.

In the past few months, our parish has been receiving generous support from

brothers and sisters from outside of our parish. Without their help, we would be 1

unable to cover our monthly expenses. Please pray for those individuals, who support us on top of tithing to their own community/parish. Recently, we also received a donation from Our Lady of Fatima Russian Byzantine Catholic Church in San Francisco, together with many prayers for our small parish. They prayed for us during the Great Fast and took a collection to help us in need. May this example of brotherly care and charity strengthen us in following our Lord more faithfully and in responding generously to the many blessings bestowed upon us. May God grant the benefactors of St. Philips Church many blessed years.
Hospitality sign-up sheet: Please sign up for hospitality for the upcoming Sundays; the

list is in the parish hall. Last Sunday we had no one in charge, thank you to all who helped provide something to eat for our traveling families.
Reading Group - Introduction to Eastern Christianity/Spirituality Reading Group.

Come and join us! We just began our first reading last week, you can still join and catch up. We will be reading from Maximus the Confessor, Gregory Palamas, Gregory of Nyssa, Athanasius and others. This will be an exciting seminar-style reading group where you will become more familiar with some of the early writings of our Eastern Christian faith as well as have plenty of opportunity to dialogue, fellowship and grow in your faith. See Bill Martinez for more information. We meet on Sundays following lunch (12-12:30) at the church.
Bishops Appeal 2013 is now completed. We met and exceeded our goal this year,

with a very generous support of some friends of St. Philips. Thank you all for participating in this annual collection for our Eparchy. May God bless you richly in your life.

YEAR OF FAITH
THE VIRTUES (Part One) And if a man love righteousness her labors are virtues (areta): for she teaches temperance and prudence, justice and fortitude: which are such things, as men can have nothing more profitable in their life.(Wis 8:7LXX). English speakers us the term virtues for the moral strengths that incline us in the way of goodness. Virtue comes from the Latin word virtus, meaning manly strength. The Greek word associated with these moral strengths is areta (plural). An aret, often translated as excellence, is a moral quality that inclines us to our fulfillment as human persons. We ought to seek 2

after that which will lead us to Heaven; namely wisdom, chastity, justice, virtue (St. Athanasius).
Fr. Anthony Hernandez, Eparchy of Phoenix, Religious Education Office.
