acial aging is an inevitable

process that affects us all.
According to Dr. Jeffrey B.
Wise, MD, FACS, who is singular-
ly focused on plastic surgery and
aesthetic rejuvenation of the face,
There is no longer a one-size-fits-
all facelift. Whether patients are
considering subtle changes or more
dramatic results, patients need to
know that they have options.
To become familiar with the
various approaches to minimize
the effects of aging, it is important
to work with an experienced, facial
plastic surgeon. Dr. Wise, New
Jerseys premiere facial rejuvena-
tion surgeon, has performed over
4,000 cases of facelift, eyelid reju-
venation, laser skin resurfacing and
fat transfer.
Dr. Wise seeks to redefine the
patient/surgeon dynamic with
honest, straightforward communi-
cation. I am committed to creat-
ing a relationship with my
patients, so they are free to express
their beauty goals. In return, I am
able to provide more nuanced rec-
ommendations, with the intention
to achieve the most natural aes-
thetic result.
In order to further collaborate
with his patients, Dr. Wise utilizes
the Vectra 3-D Imaging System.
This invaluable device allows
patients to preview three-dimen-
sional simulations of themselves
and the aesthetic procedures that
interest them.
Dr. Wise is a double board-
certified facial plastic and recon-
structive surgeon. While Dr. Wise
has attended some of our countrys
finest institutions, specifically Yale,
Cornell and the University of
Pennsylvania, his true focus is on
results. His knowledge and experi-
ence earned him a prestigious posi-
tion as a clinical professor on New
York Universitys School of
Medicine faculty.
He developed the Wise
Signature and Wise Revitalize
Lifts, which combine multiple,
rapid-recovery procedures that
work together to give overall cos-
metic improvement. Patients leave
looking natural, refreshed and
healthy, without the telltale signs
of surgery.
The Wise Signature Lift
includes facelifting, fat transfer,
fractionated C02 laser skin resur-
facing, and upper and lower eyelid
procedures. When performed con-
currently, these procedures target
all of the primary symptoms of an
aging face.
Dr. Wise has found that com-
bining these procedures into a sin-
gle surgery is an ideal and conven-
ient way to achieve patients aes-
thetic goals, offering the patient
minimal downtime and unparal-
leled results. Most procedures are
performed without general anes-
thesia and patients go home the
same day!
The Wise Center for Plastic
Surgery also offers a variety of min-
imally invasive aesthetic services
for those patients seeking a lift

International Students aged between 13

Your family will not only gain a new
family member, you will also learn
about a different culture, its values and

The International Students will be in

Families just need to provide room and

T
his Memorial Day
weekend, I had the
opportunity to be a
front-row spectator at the
Wayne Township Memorial
Day ceremony to honor our
deceased veterans and to com-
memorate their ultimate sacri-
fice for the security and
advancement of the American
way of life, our land and our
families. Held in front of the
courthouse parking lot on
Valley Road, the speeches,
prayers and benedictions were
heartwarming, upbeat and dig-
nified, including the traditional
placing of wreaths at the base
of the foundations that honor
our war dead from the 20th and
21st centuries.
The mayor, a minister and
a rabbi, as well as some local
youth, took part in the nation-
al anthem and God Bless
America. The bugle playing
taps and the gun salute were
most befitting, raising the con-
sciousness and emotions of all
those in attendance, inspiring
us to reach into our souls and
imagine the horrors of war and
the risks involved. That after-
noon, my heart and my brain
told me that war is something
to be avoided at all costs. The
whole service took under an
hour and was time well spent.
There was only one problem
that I could see.
This whole planned and
fine program took place after
the parade concluded and the
audience had departed. If there
were thousands along the
parade route, there were fewer
than 100 people to witness the
most important part of the days
events. Of those estimated 100
people that heard the words of
thanks and praise for the ulti-
mate sacrifice made by these
people who served our nation, I
would also estimate that half of
them were participants in the
ceremony, meaning only about
fifty folks actually benefited
from the excellent job and
efforts put forth by the hon-
orees who once again volun-
teered to be there.
Where did the crowds go
from just the hour before?
Where were the children who,
above any and all other activi-
ties that day, needed to hear
the words and eyewitness
accounts of our American his-
tory and the stories of the lives
of the brave men and women
who risked and or paid every-
thing they possessed to stand
up for our American way of life,
to protect us from harm and to
lead by example with patriot-
ism, honor and discipline? The
general public in Wayne had
no idea about the ceremonies
that took place when the last
drum major walked past the
observation bleachers, three
hours after the first parade
ensemble members marched
their first step on to the Valley
Road parade route.
I was sorry and embar-
rassed for the organizers of such
a well thought-out program, as
well as the heartache I felt for
our honorees and their families.
Im so glad to have had the
opportunity to witness the
solemn activities of that after-
noon. If you missed this pro-
gram or the countless others
that took place in neighboring
towns, please do yourself a
favor by pledging never to miss
the memorial services next
year! Memorial Day is not all
about picnics, parties and
pools. Its about lives lost, fam-
ilies broken and extreme grati-
tude for the sacrifice of others
who paid the ultimate price for
our safety and security. Thank
you, veterans. Thank you ser-
vicemen and servicewomen.
Thank you volunteers. Thank
all of you for all that you do, did
and will continue to do for the
betterment of others. I salute
you. We all salute you!
The day before the holi-
day, I attended the funeral of
my great uncle, Jack, who was
three months away from his
95th birthday. When reflecting
back on my encounters with
Uncle Jack, I realized that in
over 50 years, I had only visited
with him about 50 times. The
most poignant memory I can
recall of my Uncle Jack was
that most times when we met,
he was always in tears, crying. I
finally figured it out. You see,
Jack was the youngest of 8 chil-
dren.
The most memorable rec-
ollections of my Uncle Jack
were that we were always bury-
ing a sibling of his, including
my grandfather and even
Uncle Jacks own spouse and
his 94-year-old mother, my
great grandmother Sarah! He
was the baby of the family, and
took upon himself the responsi-
bility to help the surviving in-
laws and their children with
everything from choosing a
casket, securing their just due
from Social Security and han-
dling the food for the gathering
after the visit to the cemetery.
These were awesome responsi-
bilities that someone with a
clear head had to do and Uncle
Jack was the one to do it.
Now it was his turn for a
final celebration. There were

tears for sure, but they were
tears of joy, for it was a good life
with meaning, impact and a
trail of success. Jack was a vet-
eran of WWII, having served
in Japan. He was a father, a
grandfather, a great grandfa-
ther, a successful businessman
and a philanthropist. Everyone
loved Jack and part of his lega-
cy will be his love for his fami-
ly and the fine people they all
turned out to be. But with his
passing ended a generation of
Charnets where he was the
patriarch. His children, in their
60s and 70s, and their cousins
are now next-in-line to plan
their own legacy and final cele-
brations. If you are in your twi-
light years, it might be a good
idea to compose your own eulo-
gy, choose your casket and final
resting place and review your
will and other estate-planning
documents. There is still time
to plan physically, spiritually,
mentally and financially for
your future, for it is impossible
to do post-mortem estate-plan-
ning. The 7 Ps: Proper Prior
Planning Prevents Poor

tain to end-of-life planning to
avoid becoming a burden to
your family and loved ones at
the end of your road.

F
athers Day might be a
great time to give a
gift back to your chil-
dren. The gift of affirmation.
Perhaps the gift of forgiveness.
Ernest Hemingway wrote
a short story called, The
Capital of the World.
Hemingway told the story of a
father and his teenage son.
The son had sinned against
his father and in his shame he
ran away from home. The
father searched all over Spain
for him, but still he could not
find the boy. Finally, in the
city of Madrid, in a last des-
perate attempt to find his son,
the father placed an ad in the
daily newspaper. The ad read:
PACO MEET AT HOTEL
MONTANA NOON TUES-
DAY ALL IS FORGIVEN
PAPA.
The father prayed that
maybe the boy would see the
ad and maybe - just maybe -
he would come to the Hotel
Montana.
And on Tuesday at
noon, the father in Ernest
Hemingways story arrived at
the Hotel Montana and he
could not believe his eyes. A
squadron of police officers
had been called out to keep
order among the eight hun-
dred young boys named
Paco who had come to
meet their father in front of
the Hotel Montana. Eight
hundred boys named Paco
read the ad in the newspaper
and hoped it was for them.
Eight hundred Pacos came
to receive the forgiveness
they so desperately needed.
All children want the
approval of their fathers. I
am not talking about the
ridiculous and disingenu-
ous you are the best at
everything drivel that some
parents spew. Eventually the
child will figure out that you
are not being authentic. I am
talking about affirming what
is trueabout their unique
design.

H
umans are not the
only animals that may
get a bit pudgy around
the middle and tip the scale in
the wrong direction. Mans best
friend also may put on some
extra pounds, necessitating a
workout plan to get back into
shape.
According to the
Association for Pet Obesity
Prevention, 53 percent of adult
dogs in the United States are
classified as overweight or
obese by their veterinarians.
Yet, pet owners are sometimes
unaware that their prized
pooches are overweight.
Overweight dogs and cats
face some of the same health
risks as overweight men and
women. Musculoskeletal prob-
lems, such as degenerative joint
diseases, and back problems
have been linked to obesity, as
have heart disease and respira-
tory problems. Diabetes and
heat or exercise intolerance are
other side effects of being over-
weight.
But a pets weight is not
the lone indicator of how
healthy the animal is, and the
ideal weight can vary from dog
to dog. A body condition score
is helpful in determining a pets
ideal body weight. Some indi-
cations a dog may not be at a
healthy weight include:
a belly that hangs below the
rib cage area
a belly that moves when the
dog moves, unless the dog is
pregnant or has just given birth
inability of the owner or vet
to feel the dogs ribs in the rib
cage
a waddle of skin on the neck
of dogs where excess skin isnt
indicative of the breed
no visual indication of dogs
waist
inability of the owner or vet
to feel the bones near the base
of the tail
a less active lifestyle, includ-
ing avoiding exercise and play
excessive panting
Keeping a dog in shape is
one of the best things you can
do for your pet. But what if your
dog already has packed on a few
unnecessary pounds? Its time
to start a canine fitness routine
and follow some other guide-
lines.
Talk to your veterinarian.
Obesity could be the result of
eating too much or inactivity,
but it also can be a sign of a
serious condition. If a routine
exam and blood
work come up nor-
mal, then you can
begin a plan for help-
ing Fido shed the
weight.
Consider a new
food. There are
many different types
of foods on the market, includ-
ing low-calorie options. Some
foods contain extra fiber to
help the dog feel fuller without
having eaten as much. Also,
look for foods with lean protein
sources without grains and
other filler.
Break up the feeding
schedule. Instead of one large
meal a day, feed your dog two or
three smaller portions of food,
which will help keep his
metabolism going all day long.
Become joint joggers. Jogging
with a dog can become an
enjoyable pastime that enables
you both to get exercise and
stay in shape.
Take up swimming. Many
dogs are natural lovers of water,
and swimming is an effective,
low-impact exercise.
Teach your dog tricks. Physical
tricks, like fetching a ball or
rolling over, can keep dogs
active.
Go for long walks. Take
your dog with you wherever
you go. The more he or she is
up and moving, the less chance
there is to sleep and be lazy.

H
ome health care is a
preferred way of
care for those who
wish to receive quality indi-
vidualized services in the
comfort of their homes.
Recipients of home health
care include the elderly,
those living with an illness,
and those recovering from
an accident or surgery.
Choosing a quality home
health care agency is not an
easy decision. Here are some
helpful points to consider:
1. Is the agency certified by a
reputable Accrediting Body
of Healthcare Organization,
such as the Commission on
Accreditation for Home
Care (CAHC), which is New
Jerseys largest and only
state-based home care
accreditation program?
2. Is the agency available
24/7 with an RN supervisor
on-call if necessary?
3. Is there a proper process
for the hiring, screening and
training of employees? Note:
RNs need to be licensed by
the New Jersey Board of
Nursing and Home Health
Aides should be well-
trained on emergency,
disease or infection
control, and safety
measures.
4. Is there an efficient
caregiver-client match-
ing procedure to ensure
individual expectations
and needs are met?
5. Is there an RN-
approved and tailor-made
plan of care developed for
the agencys home health
aides to follow for each spe-
cific client?
6. Is there an efficient com-
munication system in place
for handling concerns and
issues, such as a home health
aide running late or unable
to make it to work?
7. What payment options are
available, including group
health plans, long-term care
insurance, Medicaid, pri-
vate/self Pay, and veterans
benefits?
8. Are the services being
offered by the agency right
for you or your loved one?
Does the agency offer skilled
services performed by an RN,
such as medication set-up per
physician orders, infusions,
and wound care? Or does it
offer non-skilled services
generally performed by home
health aides, including com-
panionship, daily errands,
light housekeeping and meal
preparation?

T
here are so many peo-
ple who are anxious to
get knee-deep in
home improvement projects.
Still others are more than
happy to leave the work to a
professional and sit back and
enjoy the results. Those who
choose to hire a contractor
can certainly get their fill of
home improvement projects
by watching films where
homes or renovations are cen-
tral to the plot.
1.Money Pit: No list would
be complete without includ-
ing this movie starring Tom
Hanks and Shelley Long, who
attempt to renovate a man-
sion only to be met with disas-
ter after disaster.
2.The Notebook: Nicholas
Sparks novel turned into this
unforgettable, romantic film is
a love story at its core.
However, the renovation of a
Victorian home in the
Carolinas is also central to the
story and makes for amazing
imagery.
3. Poltergeist: This movie
showcases what can go wrong
when a home takes on a life of
its own as malevolent ghosts
take over.
4. Under the Tuscan Sun:
While renovating a home
might be considered interest-
ing, doing so in the remote
beauty of the Italian country-
side makes for a much more
visually appealing film.
5. House of Sand and Fog:
A woman is evicted from her
home after it is wrongly repos-
sessed and auctioned.
Together with a sheriff s
deputy the woman begins
harassing the new owners of
the home in an attempt to get
back her residence.
6. Field of Dreams:
Although it is not the house
that is getting a makeover, but
rather the fields behind this
impressive farmhouse, viewers
can be mesmerized by the
magic that ensues afterward.

arm weekends are
prime time for yard
work and outdoor
projects. To avoid turning tasks
into turmoil, be sure to take a
few extra moments to ensure
the power tools you use are safe.
CSA Group, a leader in elec-
tronic product testing and cer-
tification, offers tips to help
ensure the safety of you and
your family while doing yard
work this weekend.
GENERAL TIPS FOR
YARD MAINTENANCE
Ensure products such as
electric lawnmowers, barbe-
cues, power tools, ladders,
decorative lights, extension
cords and safety apparel carry
the mark of a recognized or
accredited certification organ-
ization, such as CSA Group.
Protect yourself by wearing
protective eyewear and
footwear recognized by a certi-
fication organization, such as
CSA Group. Hearing protec-
tion should be worn when
operating loud machinery,
vehicles or tools.
LAWNMOWERS
Before mowing, take the
time to remove objects in your
yard that may obstruct your
mower or be flung by its rotat-
ing blades.
Never clear an obstruc-
tion in a running mower. If
the mower is electric, turn off
the power and unplug the
machine. If its gas, turn off the
power and make sure the
engine isnt running and that
all safety features have been
activated.
PORTABLE POWER
TOOLS
Never use a power tool
that has a cracked casing,
loose parts or frayed cords.
Ensure all safety guards are in
place and in proper working
order.
Make sure the tool is
turned off before its plugged
in or unplugged. Always
unplug the tool before chang-
ing parts like drill bits or cut-
ting blades.
Use only electric power
tools that have either a three-
prong plug or double insula-
tion with a heavy enough
gauge or wire size to
handle the electricity load.
Use an outlet with a Ground
Fault Circuit Interrupter to
protect against electric shock.
EXTENSION CORDS
Check extension cords
for wear and damage before
each use. Discard any cords
that are frayed or have dam-
aged insulation.
Never connect more
than one extension cord
together. Instead, use a single
cord that is long enough to
reach from the outlet to an
appliance or tool.
When working outside,
only use cords clearly labeled
for outdoor use.
Never run an electrical
cord through a doorway or
under a carpet. If a cord
becomes hot when plugged in,
discontinue use immediately
and replace with a heavier
gauge cord.

he late movie critic
Roger Ebert was
quoted as saying, No

no bad movie is short

the power to transport you

you were worrying about.
Men and women may
sometimes see eye-to-eye as
to what constitutes a good
movie. But there is a unique
breed of movie that seems
tailor-made for men. These
movies are the antithesis of
all things chick flick. In
fact, they may devour chick
flicks for lunch. A guy movie
is generally full of beautiful

enough action sequences too

Although many mod-

might have been overlooked
during awards season, the fol-
lowing flicks have found
their ways into the hearts of
many men.

plete without a classic mob
flick? Goodfellas is based on
a true story and features a
whos who cast of acting
greats, including Ray Liotta,
Robert DeNiro and Joe Pesci.
Some consider this the best
mob movie ever made. The
film earned Pesci a Best
Supporting Actor award for
his role.
No Country for Old

of drug runners and the
money they left behind. This
leaves him in the crosshairs
of psychopathic killer Anton

hired gun in pursuit of the
money.
Gladiator: The ulti-

movie is the heartbreak of
the fighter losing his wife and
child, most guys would be
happy to tune in for the vio-

Casino Royale: Many
film fans have noted Daniel
Craigs James Bond is grittier
and tougher than his prede-
cessors. Casino Royale was
the first in a series of reboots
with Craig as the popular
secret agent and it features
much of the drama and
intrigue of past Bond flicks,
as well as some awe-inspiring
action sequences.
Fight Club: This adap-
tation of a Chuck Palahniuk
novel keeps you guessing as
to what is really going on
until the very end of the
movie. Featuring great per-
formances from both Brad

movie instantly became a
classic man movie upon its

Pulp Fiction: Quentin

classic of man movies, but
perhaps none are more popu-

cup soy sauce
2 Tbls lemon juice
3 Tbls honey
1 tsp minced garlic
1 tsp ground ginger
1 green onion, sliced
cup vegetable oil
1 (1-2 lb) flank steak
Directions
Whisk together the soy
sauce, lemon juice, honey, gar-
lic, ground ginger, green
onion, and vegetable oil in a
bowl; pour into a resealable
plastic bag. Add the flank
steak, coat with the marinade,
squeeze out excess air, and seal
the bag. Marinate in the refrig-
erator at least 4 hours.
Preheat an outdoor grill
for medium-high heat, and
lightly oil the grate.
Remove the flank steak
from the marinade and shake
off excess. Pour the remaining
marinade into a small
saucepan and set aside.
Cook the flank steak on
the preheated grill until it
begins to firm, and is reddish-
pink and juicy in the center,
about 5 minutes per side. An
instant-read thermometer
inserted into the center should
read 130 degrees F. Once
cooked, cover the steak with
several sheets of aluminum
foil, and set aside to rest for 10
minutes before slicing thinly
against the grain.
While the steak is rest-
ing, bring the marinade to a
boil over medium-high heat.
Pour the sauce over the sliced
steak to serve.
G
rilling is a summer-
time tradition at
households across
the country. The family grill-
master typically looks for-
ward to a night spent prepar-
ing a perfectly grilled meal
for his or her family. But
few grillmasters look for-
ward to cleaning the grill, a
necessary step to ensure
your next grilled meal is as
safe as your last one was
delicious.
If cleaning the grill is a
chore, then at least it is one
of the easier chores around
the house. All it takes is
some routine maintenance to
keep a grill clean and safe,
and such maintenance need
not take much time.
Brush the grates with a
brass wire brush. The surfaces
of the grill are best cleaned
with a brass wire brush,
which can quickly and effec-
tively remove leftover food
and marinade from the grill
while preventing the growth
of bacteria. Soak the brush in
hot, soapy water once the
grill has been cleaned, and
keep the brush indoors to
keep it from succumbing to
the elements.
Prevent rust. Spraying the
grill with cooking oil after it
has been cleaned can prevent
unsightly and potentially
unhealthy rust from forming
over the life of your grill. This
will increase your grill's life
expectancy and give your fam-
ily members and guests some
peace of mind knowing the
grill is bacteria-free and well-
maintained.
Clean the grease traps.
Grease traps can be a fire haz-
ard, especially if they are not
routinely cleaned. Grease is
very flammable, and it can
easily increase the tempera-
tures on the grill's surfaces.
Ridding a grill of grease
might require a little elbow
grease of your own, but it's
worth the effort to reduce
your risk of fire.
Dump the coals. Charcoal
grills might not be as wide-
ly used as gas grills, but tra-
ditionalists who have stayed
loyal to charcoal must dump
the coals once the night has
ended. Give the coals ample
time to cool, shutting off
oxygen to the grill to speed
up the process, and make sure
there are no coals still burn-
ing before you discard them.

eekend getaways
are a great oppor-
tunity to unwind
and escape the daily grind of
everyday life. Thats especial-
ly true for men faced with the
pressures of raising a family
and maintaining a career.
Such men need a break every
so often, and a weekend get-
away can make for the per-
fect respite from all of that
responsibility.
Many men prefer to
share their weekend getaways
with male friends who also
could use a break. Multiple
men making the trip man-
date that it be planned in
advance and not a last-
minute affair. It also requires
a little collaboration on the
part of the participants, as a
fun getaway for one man
might seem like a chore to
another. The following are a
few getaway ideas men might
want to consider when look-
ing to get away from it all.
FISHING TRIP
A fishing trip is an ideal
getaway for men who love to
fish and need to relieve a lit-
tle stress. Fishing is not for
everyone, so make sure
everyone is on board when
planning a trip for your
friends and yourself. The
relaxing nature of spending
some time on the water and
catching some fish makes
this the ideal getaway for
men looking for a peaceful
weekend to enjoy the great
outdoors. Take along a grill
so you can cook up the fruits
of your fishing labors each
night.
STADIUM TOUR
Few getaways may pique
the interest of baseball fans
more than a stadium tour.
Pack up the car and plan a
stadium tour with your
friends. Many teams are
located within driving dis-
tance of one another, so its
very possible men could cross
a handful of stadiums off
their lists in just a few days.
HIT THE LINKS
Many men dream of
spending a weekend on the
golf course, and a golf get-
away can make for the per-
fect weekend for men who
love to share a few laughs on
the links. Speak to a travel
agent about planning a golf
getaway weekend. Chances
are you can save money by
packaging your airfare,
accommodations and even
your greens fees into a golf
getaway package. Then sim-
ply hit the links and enjoy all
that time relaxing in the sun.
And instead of playing your
typical 18 holes, play 36
instead!
EMBRACE YOUR INNER
CITY SLICKER
If you want your getaway
to be a little more fast-paced,
plan a weekend with friends in
a favorite city where you can
enjoy nightlife, great food and
a few drinks. Spend the after-
noon catching a ball game or
soaking up some of the citys
culture before you and your
friends engage in a little revelry
after dark. If you and your
friends will be flying in from

- Jim Valvano
P
eople fortunate enough
to own their own plots
of land often choose to
fence in their pieces of para-
dise. Fences serve many pur-
poses: to designate property
boundaries, keep pets or chil-
dren contained in a safe
environment, corral live-
stock, offer privacy or add
aesthetic appeal.
Although installing a
fence may seem like the right
idea for you, going about it the
wrong way may lead to prob-
lems among neighbors, partic-
ularly if you live where the
houses are relatively close to
one another. Some homeown-
ers find fences become the
final point of contention
among disagreeable neighbors
or create tension with a neigh-
bor with whom you previously
had a good relationship. Being
courteous with fence plans is
the way to avoid any animosi-
ty along the way.
There are certain things
you must do and should do if
you plan to erect a fence. Most
people find neighbors appreci-
ate being informed of any
decisions you are thinking of
making to the property that
can affect their views or their
adjoining property. Before
drawing up fence plans with a
contractor, talk to the neigh-
bors on either side of your
home and gauge their recep-
tiveness to a fence. At this
point, you may want to con-
sider offering to make the
fencing project a joint deal to
save money should the neigh-
bors decide to install a fence as
well. Contractors will often
discount if they have several
customers doing an installa-
tion at the same time. Property
owners can save by splitting
the costs of the shared walls of
the fence where their property
lines meet.
Explain your case for the
fence. Most neighbors are
receptive to the idea if they
know the reasoning -- espe-
cially if the desire for a fence is
not to keep them at bay. It's
hard to protest a fence that is a
safety precaution for children.
If your neighbor already has a
fence, you must ask whether
you can connect your fence
panels into the support post on
your shared side.
Once you notify your
neighbors as a courtesy, there
are certain steps to take that
will prevent any legal disputes
down the road. Even the most
easy-going neighbor could
grow aggravated if the fence is
put up carelessly or ends up
partially on his property. The
best way to prevent this is to
apply for a new, professional
property survey and have
property lines indicated with

paint or wood markers.
Each town or city has dif-
ferent regulations with regard
to fencing, so it is important to
learn the ropes or hire a con-
tractor who is familiar with the
rules. It might be illegal to
install fences directly on the
property line. The law might
require the fence be installed a
few inches inward. There also
may be rules about how high
fences can be in the front of
the home, sides and back.
Corner lot properties may
have added regulations
depending on whether the
fence could prove a visual
obstruction to drivers.
If you live in a planned
community, or one with a
homeowners' association, it is
your job to find out the guide-
lines for any
h o m e
i mp r o v e -
ments. The
HOA may
dictate the style, size and
maintenance of the fence or
may not allow a fence at all.
Once all the details are
checked, you may have to
apply for a fence permit. This
way the construction of the
fence and finished product will
meet safety standards, and the
area in which you live can pro-
vide consistent quality con-
trol. If the fence is installed by
code, there is little chance it
will have to be torn down or
changed in the near future.
Also, doing it by the book
means that a neighbor can be
unhappy about a fence but not
have legal recourse to ask you
to remove it.
As an added form of
courtesy, it is proper fence eti-
quette to put the "good" side
of the fence facing the neigh-
bors' yards. That means the
side of the fence that doesn't
show the support panels and
posts. Remember, it is your
fence so you are also responsi-
ble for all maintenance of the
fence -- on all sides. Just
because your neighbor also
will be benefitting from your
fence, doesn't mean he will
have to care for it.
