SAINT AUGUSTINE CHURCH WASHINGTON, DC

June 9, 2013

Year of Faith
10th Sunday in Ordinary Time
God Has Visited His People!
God is mystery which technically means, hidden. But history assures us that God never intended things to stay that way! The truth is that the God who knows us through and through wants to be known by us. For this reason God has been revealing himself to the world since the moment he began creating it! Whether proving himself as the greatest Artist in the universe by forming galaxies that leave us in awe or creating a human brain and nervous system which baffles and amazes us in its complexity, God proves that he has no equal. Besides these examples of natural revelation we remind ourselves in the creed that God has spoken through the prophets that is, he has also revealed himself through supernatural means as well: the Holy Scriptures (e.g., the 10 Commandments). In the scriptures we discover that God is good, holy, just, merciful, compassionate, all -powerful, demanding, patient, faithful, loving and true. But it is in the person of Jesus Christ that God literally bares it all! Christians consider Jesus the fullness of revelation. If you have seen me, Jesus would say, you have seen the Father (John 14:9). In an obscure little town in Judea God snuck into our world completely under the expectant gaze of the highest religious figures and revealed himself to the poor while living among them. The challenge for the Church today which as Christ Body on earth is to embrace and live out the ongoing mission of Christ in such a way that people are left without any doubt that God is in their midst. After Elijah ministered to the widows son, in the Book of Kings, the widow immediately glorified God for visiting her home. When Jesus did the same for the grieving mother in todays Gospel the reaction was the same: Oh-my-God iswith-us! As an eternal being God will always to a degree remain a mystery to us. However the fact that he dwells in our midst must not remain a mystery to our world. If we as church embrace the mission that Christ has left us, then the truth of Gods presence will be a mystery no more.
