A Great Cloud of Witnesses by Rev. Justin Gung, Minister of Families & Young Adults
On a Saturday in late April, I awoke before the sun peaked its head over the horizon. I stepped into my clothing, got behind the wheel of my car, and drove to the Start Line of the Country Music Half-marathon. As I moved down the road, I turned my windshield wipers on high. The sky had opened up and rain was soaking everything below. It had been that way for several hours and it would be that way for several hours more. As I parked my car, I gazed at the pelting rain from the warm, dry interior of my car. For a moment, I seriously considered driving home and falling back into bed. If I did, I thought, I'd be warm, dry, and rested before going to Bethany Hills later that day for a church retreat. Had the weather been nice, I wouldn't have thought twice about running. But covering 13.1 miles in the cold, wet weather? The thought of that gave me pause. But a great change occurred within me, and it was precipitated by something so mundane: I began to see other runners walking toward the Start Line. They were wearing hats, sweatshirts, and ponchos. More importantly, they were wearing resolve, grit, and even smiles. Suddenly, I wanted to run. I was determined to run. No matter what! I looked at these hearty souls and said, "I'm not alone. I'll be with others. And if they can do it, then I can do it, too." Later on, I crossed the Finish Line drenched in gladness and gratitude as much as sweat and rain. (Several church members did the same, including Becca Gossett and Katherine Hartle. For Emmie Thomas and Hope Walker, this was their first half-marathon. And unfazed by the wet conditions, Laura Wasson achieved a personal record.) If I had to summarize my experience, I'd say this: "When I saw the rain, I felt fear; but when I saw the other runners, I felt courage." Indeed, it was only when my eyes were opened to the tremendous community around me that I was able to face the rain. Friends, if this is true of the Country Music Half-marathon, then could it be true of the marathon of life? If this is true of the Country Music Half-marathon, then might it also apply to the human "race?" I think so. This is the last article in a series that I've written for The Spire. For six months, I've highlighted just a few of the small groups that make the church so special. If you haven't followed along, here's an overview: I've featured the Fellowship Dinner Groups, the Tuesday Morning Prayer Group, the Circles of Prayer, the Super Somebodies, the

Heavenly Helpers, Nashville Tools for Schools, the Restore Ministry small groups, Christian Women's Fellowship (C.W.F.) and its many circles, the "Geezer" Group, and the Wednesday Morning Men's Bible Studies. There are so many more I could name! I didn't have time to write about the hikers, the knitters, the stitchers, and a dozen others! What does this tell us? It tells us that the church has a small group for everyone. Scripture repeatedly attests to the value of living in Christian community. It does so at the beginning: "It is not good for man to be alone" (Genesis 2:18). It does so in the middle: "How good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell together in unity" (Psalm 133:1). It does so toward the end: "Be eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace" (Ephesians 4:3). The clarion call of Scripture is to live in sweet harmony with other Christians. Indeed, we will be our best only when we are in deep spiritual community loving one another, comforting one another, praying for one another, serving one another, and holding each other accountable to godly living. The path we are to walk is supposed to be "straight and narrow," but it is not supposed to be lonely. So, let us heed the words of Hebrews 12:1, which says, "Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us." On that Saturday morning in April, the "great cloud of witnesses" around me was more powerful than the storm clouds in the sky. That is what gave me the courage to cross the Start Line and the grit to cross the Finish Line. In the same way, as we run the race of life, we have a choice: We can pay attention to the rain and feel fear, or we can surround ourselves with fellowship and feel courage. Which will we choose? Friends, join a small group today. Find others in this human "race" and move forward with common purpose. Together, we will go the distance and one day fall into the arms of our Maker.

This Day by Tallu Quinn, TNFP Director & Outreach Minister

I had the chance to pray with John Carpenter on Sunday before the 11:00 a.m. service. He started his prayer, "Dear Lord, thank you for the joy of this day." Normal day, let me be aware of the treasure you are. Let me learn from you, love you, bless you before you depart. Let me not pass you by in quest of some rare and perfect tomorrow. Let me hold you while I may, for it may not always be so. One day I shall dig my nails into the earth, or bury my face in the pillow, or stretch myself taut, or raise my hands to the sky and want, more than all the world, your return. Mary Jean Irion Most of us know how easy it is to be consumed by the pressures of a job and its day-to-day demands and deadlines, only to have time pass by so quickly that we realize too late that we did not fully savor life's many blessings because we were too busy being busy. I hope this week meets you and me with the discipline to love this day, to learn from this day and to use this day to serve the one who sent us to share the good news with others. Grace and Peace! tallu

Torches by Michael Graham, Director of Music Ministry

On Sunday, May 19, Christy Crider directed the Children's Choir for the last time. She has directed this choir for seven years with the help of Cathy Speers and Jamie Huling. On behalf of the music department, I would like to thank Christy, Cathy and Jamie for their dedication to our children. The following is from Christy. I directed from 2006 to 2013. I would like to thank my friend and assistant for 6 of those years, Cathy Speers. I would also like to thank tireless, loads of fun, guitar accompanist, Jamie Huling. He walked by during the summer of 2006 when we were in a rehearsal with no Urban Ministries: Summer volunteer opportunities and needed items!! Our partner, Salama Urban Ministries, is beginning their summer program and this is a great opportunity to get to know this organization and their great kids. This is an outstanding organization that provides faith based youth development for underprivileged kids grades K-12 in the Edgehill community. For additional information, check out our web site page https://woodmontchristian.org/DynamicContent.aspx?Pagetype=Urban accompaniment and said "do you need some help?" He was there every week for 7 years after that with a smile on his face acting like one of the kids. Cathy, Jamie and I had as much fun as the children. I will miss singing with these beautiful children of God every week. But, I am excited to watch them from a pew and cheer them on. Thanks! Christy

Special Guest Author at Woodmont This Sunday, June 16th Sponsored by SpireBooks
This Sunday SpireBooks will offer an opportunity to meet East Tennessee author (and daughter-in-law of Jane and the late Jeff Dyer), Jody Cartrell Dyer. Her novel, The Eye of Adoption: The True Story of My Turbulent Wait for a Baby, captures the tenderness and reality behind the grueling, often discouraging domestic adoption process. Jody's goals for this novel are to inspire and encourage infertile, adoptive and/ or waiting parents; to enlighten birth families and extended adoptive families with an honest story from an adoptive mother's point of view; to serve agencies, social workers, ministers and physicians as they care for those affected by infertility and/or adoption; and to inspire hope and humor for everyone involved in the adoption process. Our own Jane Dyer penned a few pages of the book that are especially heartwarming since her own son, Jody's husband, was adopted. Please join us to meet and discuss concepts of the book with Jody following both services in the Gathering Hall. Autographed copies of the book will be available. Because this Sunday is Father's Day, Jody is offering free downloads of the book on Kindle in honor of her child's maternal and adoptive mother's father's birthday.
