The library sells stationery items including paper, folders, pens and postage stamps. We try to make our facilities as accessible as possible for users with disabilities. Computers with specialised software are available and also other miscellaneous aids, including: Magnifiers, some hand-held CCTV print enlargers MP3 and personal cassette recorders Talking dictionaries on CD-ROM Specialised keyboards and mice

A courier service exists for material located at a library not on the Cathays Park site or in the off-campus library stores. Please ask for details.

Use the inter-library loan service to obtain books and journal articles which are not available in Cardiff University Libraries. Your School is charged for this service and requests may need to be authorised. Please ask for details. You may use the networked computers, linked to printers, to access electronic databases and software, including the Internet, wordprocessing and email.

Membership

Computing facilities

A wireless service is available in the Library. Please ask for details.

Computer rooms are available throughout the campus, some open 24 hours a day. There are dedicated computer rooms on each floor of the library.

All staff and students of Cardiff University can use Senghennydd Library. External membership schemes are available, including our Alumni scheme. Library cards for alumni are issued at Senghennydd Library. You will need your alumni card and one form of photo ID. There is a charge of 10 for twelve months library membership, which entitles you to borrow up to 4 standard loan items.

Please note that opening hours vary during the vacation and on seasonal and bank holidays and may be extended during times of peak demand. Study environment

Black-and-white photocopying facilities are available. Both photocopiers accept cash and can also be operated using your network myPrint account. Scanners are also available.

Photocopying

The Library aims to provide an area conducive to study for all who use it. Please do not inconvenience other users by talking loudly, listening to music or using your mobile phone. Library users are allowed to drink bottled water in public spaces of the library other than designated refreshment areas, but are still not allowed other forms of food or drink.

Book a Librarian

Location

The Senghennydd Library is located on the ground floor of the School of Mathematics and Cardiff Centre for Lifelong Learning Building in Senghennydd Road. On entering the building turn left and go through the swing doors. The library is on the right.

Journals Journals are arranged on the shelves alphabetically by title. In addition, many journals are available electronically. You can access these from Voyager at http://library.cardiff.ac.uk or from http://elibrary.cardiff.ac.uk Databases Cardiff University subscribes to a range of databases which can help you find journal articles and other subject-related information.

Your University Identity Card Please carry your University card at all times when visiting the Library. You will also need it whenever you borrow material.

For a full list of databases, go to www.cardiff.ac.uk/insrv/eresources and click on Databases. Most databases can be accessed using your Cardiff University Login, but certain databases need a special username and password. Please ask for details.

How many items can you borrow?

The LEARN material is on the ground floor of the library and the MATHS stock, study tables and computer room are on the first floor.

Books Books are arranged on the shelves according to subject. Each book is labelled with its subject classification number and is filed on the shelves in this order. Use the Voyager library catalogue to: Locate items in any of the Cardiff University Libraries plus over 20 other NHS Trust / Postgraduate Centre Libraries across Wales Check whether items are on loan Place requests for items which are on loan View a list of the items you currently have on loan or have requested Renew the period of loan for the items you have borrowed

Special collections Senghennydd Library holds a collection of classical music CDs and foreign language DVDs which may be borrowed for one week free of charge. University card (library card) issuing for LEARN students

Please note that loan periods vary. Items in greater demand may be available for shorter periods only. Renewals During the academic session you can normally renew your loans for a further period unless they have been reserved by another user. Use the My Account option on Voyager, telephone the Library or come to the Issue Desk to renew.

LEARN students may now obtain a University Identity Card in the Senghennydd Library between 10.00 - 20.30 Mon - Fri or 10.00 - 17.00 Sat.

A receipt for course payment or a letter from the LEARN office must be produced. The card issuing process takes approximately 5 minutes.

Returns For the benefit of others you should return loans no later than the date given at the time of issue or renewal. With the exception of limited loans and reserved items, loans may be returned to any Cardiff University Library. Fines are payable on material returned late. Fines If you have fines or overdue items you may not be able to borrow until overdue items are returned and fines paid (please see overleaf).
