ICT in Education: Role of MCIT/DIT

Pilots in frontier areas before the formal system responds

Courses on Microprocessor in late 70s UG/PG Courses in ICT in early 80s Establishment of ERNET, CDAC, DOEACC in late 80s Language Computing/Learning Material Development in Emerging Technologies in early 90s E-learning activities: Courseware for MS (BITS Pilani), ADIT of IGNOU etc. in late 90s Currently UG/PG Courses on VLSI Design/Embedded Systems Design/Information Security Special Manpower Development for Software Exports

Being initiated and nurtured till the formal system takes over and now establishment of National Knowledge Network

Human Resources Development

To ensure availability of trained human resources for the manufacturing & service sectors of ICT &E industry to meet the demand forecasting. Identifying gaps emerging from the formal sector and organizing the programmes in nonnon-formal/formal sectors to meet these gaps. Course structuring for Electronics & IT industry covering: (i) NonNon-formal ITIT-Training Sector; (ii) ITIT-enabled services BPO, Medical Transcription, Legal Transcription, Call Centers; (iii) Microelectronics & NanoNano -electronics; (iv) Software development, and (v) BioBio-informatics structuring & promoting of IT/BT Courses. National Skill Development in IT

National Skill Development Initiative

Government of India has approved the Coordinated Action of Skill Development: Three tier structure set up: Prime Ministers National Council on Skill Development National Skill Development Coordination Board National Skill Development Corporation National Skill Development Policy announced To create a pool of 500 million trained persons by the year 2022. DITs Target in NSDI is 10 million in ICT by 2022

500 million IT literates by 2022

Skill Development in IT

Objective/Outcome: To create a pool of one crore trained persons by the year 2022 in line with the National Policy on Skill Development. Through a 3 pronged strategy: Scaling up of capacities of DOEACC Society to train 1 crore persons by 2022. Scaling up of capacities of CDAC to train 7 lakh persons by 2022. Financial Assistance to States/UTs for setting up of ICT Academies in each State/UTs

E-Infrastructure Initiatives
Trans Eurasia Information Network Phase 3 (TEIN3) under EU Cooperation. Trans Eurasia Information Network Phase-3 (TEIN3) to link to European Research Network 2.5 G Europe to Mumbai and India - Singapore. Establishment of Bio IT Park To promote Bio-IT activities in the country, Professional manpower creation, R&D development in Bio-IT area, Knowledge sharing. Vocational Centers for Skill Creation for the Children with Disabilities in the area of Information Technology 50 ICT Vocational Centers for training the physically challenged children with ICT skills enabling them to seek employment and earn livelihood were set up. Establishment of Knowledge Data Center at Anna University Setting up of Information Technology Investment Regions (ITIRs) in the State of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Orissa

Internet Proliferation & Governance - Initiatives

Establishment of Internet Exchange Points (IXP) 7 hubs setup by the National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) under the aegis of DIT in Mumbai, Delhi(Noida), Chennai, Kolkatta, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad. The hubs facilitate exchange of domestic Internet traffic between the peering ISP members. This enables more efficient use of international bandwidth, saving foreign exchange. It also improves the Quality of Services for the customers of member ISPs, by avoiding multiple international hops and thus reducing latency. .IN Registry NIXI is also the designated as the Registry for .IN Domain Names.

Internet Proliferation and Governance Initiatives

Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs) Domain Names in nonnonASCII Script - Domain Names are categorized as - Top Top-Level domains (TLDs) - generic and country code. Country Code Top Level Domain (ccTLD) Names in Indian Languages IDN ccTLD strings in 7 Indian languages and scripts sought by DIT, GoI have been accepted by ICANN The strings are now under evaluation for String Delegation in the root zone. Governmental Advisory Committee (GAC) Secretariat of ICANN The GAC Secretariat is established in DIT, India and the website www.gac.icann.org is Operational. To provide inputs & support to 7 Working Groups of GAC viz. Policies for ccTLD Registries; Internationalized Domain Names (IDN); Generic Top Level Domains (new registry services, creation of new TLDs etc.); DNS Root Server system and DNS Security, etc. Initiation of R&D projects for Proliferation of Internet
