Qantas Engineering Winter School Program About Qantas Qantas is Australia's largest domestic airline and one of the

About the Program This 6 month program provides students the opportunity to gain valuable skills and knowledge by contributing to real business projects within our large and complex organisation. Throughout the 6 months student will: Be assigned to a business project and play an integral part in the achievement of desired outcomes; Receive coaching and mentoring by senior business professionals who will expose them to a wide range of issues currently challenging the aviation and airline industry.

The 2012 Qantas Engineering Winter School Program will run from July 2012 February 2013. This is a paid program and the pay details are to be discussed at interview stage. About You You are in your 3rd or 4th year of undergraduate studies in one of the following disciplines: o Aeronautical Engineering o Computer Science o Mechatronics You have achieved a credit average or above throughout the course of your studies; You are a highly motivated, energetic and ambitious individual; You possess strong verbal and written communications and have the ability to liaise and present to all levels; You have high analytical skills with the ability to solve complex problems by thinking laterally; and You have a genuine interest in the Airline / Aviation Industry.

About the Projects Project 1: Tail Correction deterioration Predictor Scope: Tail correction factors directly affect performance, and are indicators of both the engine and airframe health. If changes in tail correction are properly understood, corrective maintenance action can be carried out to both engine and airframe so that overall fuel burn is improved.The objective of the project will be to use data mining and machine learning techniques on black box data to understand the reasons of tail correction changes. Project 2: Payload Planning Tool (Qadra) Enhancement Scope: Payload Planning is an essential part of our business as it allows Qantas to properly evaluate new aircraft/engines as well as routes. The objective of the study will be to enhance the current tool used to evaluate new aircraft/routes so that route optimization is correctly considered. This will include cabin optimization, city pair evaluation and the integration with the new route optimizer currently being developed by the University of Sydney.
