THE BENEFITS OF ENHANCEMENT OF LEADERSHIP TRAINING IN IMPROVING STUDENTS SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE EXECUTIVE SUMMARY i There is no other period

in world history when leadership has been making its greatest impact upon humankind than it is today. It becomes one of the canonical issues that the entire world encountered today. Leaderships impingement on the cultures of different places in the world varies. Leadership refers to a process of social influence in which one person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task". Some says leadership is determined by distinctive dispositional characteristics present at birth. Other says leadership is centrally concerned with people. The action research concentrates on the benefits of leadership training to students of Santiago National High School in their skills and abilities. Based on the data gathered by the researchers through electronic means, the following findings are presented: The aftermaths of leadership training to students are broader knowledge about leadership; more prepared for their future; their manners and conducts will aggrandize; and the relationship between teachers, students and their co-students will become appluent. Seminars to the students through the help of visual materials such as projectors and browsing the internet, activities that are easy to do such as campings, and projects that are unexpensive enough for the students to realize the benefits of leadership trainings are some ways and methodologies that can administer to Santiago National High School which is a newly

ii

founded school, that is to say, the school has no enough money to plan expensive ways to do the trainings. Having qualities like good listener, curiosity, and enable to gain feedback without burden will make a student one-of-a-kind leader. Possessing such traits will not gain fame, fortune or stardom to a student, hence, it will improve his/her self-confidence and he/she will have a good connection with others that other lacks. Santiago National High School applies the People-Oriented/Relations-Oriented Leadership, which is focusing on the organizing, supporting and improving individuals leadership abilities and knowledge. With this data, the researchers found out that the enhancement of leadership trainings help a lot to students, for their better future and progress and also to teachers, who did their best to build young leaders for tomorrows betterment.

CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION Leadership has been described as a process of social influence in which one person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leadership retrieved 1-18-2013 According to some, leadership is determined by distinctive dispositional characteristics present at birth (e.g., extraversion; intelligence; ingenuity). However, according to Forsyth (2009) there is evidence to show that leadership also develops through hard work and careful observation. Thus, effective leadership can result from nature (i.e., innate talents) as well as nurture (i.e., acquired skills). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leadership#Leadership_is_innate retrieved 01-18-2013 Although leadership is certainly a form of power, it is not demarcated by power over people rather, it is a power with people that exists as a reciprocal relationship between a leader and his/her followers (Forsyth, 2009). Despite popular belief, the use of manipulation, coercion, and domination to influence others is not a requirement for leadership. In actuality, individuals who seek group consent and strive to act in the best interests of others can also become effective leaders (e.g., class president; court judge). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leadership

#Leadership_is_possessing_power_over_others retrieved 01-18-2013 Effective leadership does not necessarily require great technical or intellectual capacity. These attributes might help, but they are not pivotal. Good leadership in the modern age more importantly requires attitudes and behaviors which characterise and relate to humanity.

Leadership is centrally concerned with people. Of course leadership involves decisions and actions relating to all sorts of other things, but leadership is special compared to any other role because of its unique responsibility for people - i.e., the followers of the leader - in whatever context leadership is seen to operate. Good leaders are followed chiefly because people trust and respect them, rather than the skills they possess. Leadership is about behaviour first, skills second. http://www.businessballs.com/leadership.htm retrieved 01-18-2013 Background of the Study According to the historian Thomas Carlyle, leaders are born and not made. He believes that effective leaders are those gifted with divine inspiration and the right characteristics. In his book "On Heroes, Hero-Worship and the Heroic in History ,"(1841) Carlyle points to likes of Muhammad and Shakespeare as examples of his theory. "The history of the world is but the biography of great men," Carlyle said. In many examples, it seems as if the right man for the job seems to emerge almost magically to take control of a situation and lead a group of people into safety or success. Some of the earliest research on leadership looked at people who were already successful leaders. These individuals often included aristocratic rulers who achieved their position through birthright. Because people of a lesser social status had fewer opportunities to practice and achieve leadership roles, it contributed to the idea that leadership is an inherent ability. http://www.businessnewsdaily.com/2730-leadership.html

http://psychology.about.com/od/leadership/a/great-man-theory-of-leadership.htm retrieved 0118-2013 Sociologist Herbert Spencer suggested that the leaders were products of the society in which they lived. In The Study of Sociology, Spencer wrote, "you must admit that the genesis of

a great man depends on the long series of complex influences which has produced the race in which he appears, and the social state into which that race has slowly grown....Before he can remake his society, his society must make him."

http://psychology.about.com/od/leadership/a/great-man-theory-of-leadership.htm retrieved 0118-2013 In 1964, Fred Fiedler published the Fiedler Contingency Model of leadership that recognized that the style of leadership that was most effective depended upon the context in which the style was applied. Leadership behavior was modeled as a continuum between Fiedler defined styles as either task motivated or relationship motivated and developed a scale to classify leaders into one of these styles. He considered the state of the relationships in the work place, the degree of structure in the task, and strength of the positional power of the leadership position in recommending a style of leader for a position. To Fiedler, stress is a key determinant of leader effectiveness (Fiedler and Garcia 1987; Fiedler et al. 1994), and a distinction is made between stress related to the leaders superior, and stress related to subordinates or the situation itself. In stressful situations, leaders dwell on the stressful relations with others and cannot focus their intellectual abilities on the job. Thus, intelligence is more effective and used more often in stress-free situations. Fiedler concludes that experience impairs performance in low-stress conditions but contributes to performance under high-stress conditions. As with other situational factors, for stressful situations Fiedler recommends altering or engineering the leadership situation to capitalize on the leaders strengths. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiedler_contingency_model retrieved 01-18-2013 A. Leadership Styles

From Mahatma Gandhi and Winston Churchill to Martin Luther King and Steve Jobs, there can seem to be as many ways to lead people as there are leaders. Fortunately, 3 businesspeople and psychologists have developed useful, simple ways to describe the main styles of leadership. By understanding these styles and their impact, you can develop your own approach to leadership and become a more effective leader. 1. Transactional Leadership This leadership style starts with the idea that team members agree to obey their leader when they accept a job. The "transaction" usually involves the organization paying team members in return for their effort and compliance. The leader has a right to "punish" team members if their work doesn't meet an appropriate standard. 2. Autocratic Leadership Autocratic leadership is an extreme form of transactional leadership, where leaders have complete power over their people. Staff and team members have little opportunity to make suggestions, even if these would be in the team's or the organization's best interest. 3. Bureaucratic Leadership Bureaucratic leaders work "by the book." They follow rules rigorously, and ensure that their people follow procedures precisely. 4. Charismatic Leadership

A charismatic leadership style can resemble transformational leadership because these leaders inspire enthusiasm in their teams and are energetic in motivating others to move forward. This excitement and commitment from teams is an enormous benefit. 5. Democratic/Participative Leadership 4 Democratic leaders make the final decisions, but they include team members in the decision-making process. They encourage creativity, and team members are often highly engaged in projects and decisions. 6. Laissez-Faire Leadership This French phrase means "leave it be," and it describes leaders who allow their people to work on their own. This type of leadership can also occur naturally, when managers don't have sufficient control over their work and their people. 7. Task-Oriented Leadership Task-oriented leaders focus only on getting the job done and can be autocratic. They actively define the work and the roles required, put structures in place, and plan, organize, and monitor work. These leaders also perform other key tasks, such as creating and maintaining standards for performance. 8. People-Oriented/Relations-Oriented Leadership With people-oriented leadership, leaders are totally focused on organizing, supporting, and developing the people on their teams. This is a participatory style and tends to encourage good teamwork and creative collaboration. This is the opposite of task-oriented leadership. http://www.mindtools.com/pages/article/newLDR_84.htm retrieved 01-19-2013

C. Traits and Characteristics of a Remarkable Leader Do you remember the last time you were in the presence of someone who made you feel important? Theres a good chance that you remember it vividly as they took a genuine interest in you and what you had to say. And it made 5 quite an impression because you felt great about yourself after the conversation. That someone had something called charisma. Some people have a knack for it, and you can immediately tell who they are because of the presence they exude when entering a room. Charisma cant be faked, and you probably know a few people who really have it. People want to be around charismatic people. They are attracted to them and are eager to be in their good graces. And its why charismatic people naturally make great leaders. Heres why: 1. They listen: More specifically, they practice active listening; being attuned to the person they are speaking with and acknowledging what they are hearing through verbal and non-verbal feedback while maintaining eye contact. It connects the sender (the one talking) to the receiver (the one listening) and gives the sender re-assurance that he is being understood. 2. They ask insightful questions: This shows the employee that his manager is genuinely interested in what he has to say and wants to learn more. 3. They offer clear, concise feedback: These are the managers who dont beat around the bush by sugarcoating constructive criticism. They are quick to recognize a job well done, and they are also quick to provide valuable guidance when they see weakness.

4. They show respect to the person they are listening to, regardless of their title, time on job or reputation: Remarkable leaders dont have egos. They arent pretentious, nor do they give an air that they are superior. They live their life trying to learn something from everyone they interact with. 5. They give people their undivided attention: In other words, when they talk to you, they arent glancing at emails, an iPhone, they dont let others interrupt your conversation and most importantly, remarkable managers are mentally present. 6. They direct the spotlight on their employees: Remarkable leaders understand that people cant be recognized enough. And when that recognition is given, they are so much more motivated to practice similar behaviors to bask in the light of accolades again, and again. 7. They dont discuss the failures of anyone: Remarkable leaders are those employees can go to with the confidence of knowing that their conversations will be one hundred percent confidential. Employees also know that their failings or moments of embarrassment will never leak. Remarkable leaders understand the meaning of dignity. 8. But they admit failure: These leaders know it is important for others to know they are human and make mistakes just like everyone else. They will never act as if they know everything, rather, they use their failures to teach everyone that life is learning, and mistakes are essential to the lifelong learning process.

Rationale One of the thrusts of the researchers for this matter is to cognize the benefits of leadership training in improving the students skills and knowledge about leadership. It is necessary to conduct this inquiry to find out what are the worth of such trainings among students and its betterment in their leadership spirits. The intention of this research paper is (1) to develop the ability and proficiency of students leadership matter through seminars and activities leading to their skilled behavior; (2) to summarize and conceptualize the advantage of the trainings to students, to teachers, to the school and to the community; and (3) to breakthrough easy ways or methods to conduct the trainings.

CHAPTER II SITUATIONAL ANALYSIS In the Philippines, leadership is a big issue. It has a complex type of governing. The Philippines is a democratic country, that is to say, the President rules the country. Under the President, a much lower rank is the governors, which rules over provinces. The mayor is the next to the governor, which direct municipalities. And the smallest type of government is the barangays, which is commanded by barangay captains. In schools, there is the so-called Supreme Student Government or the SSG. It is nationally known as National Federation of Supreme Student Governments (NFSSG). SSG is founded on the year 2003, and it is under the Student Government Program of the Department of Education. The Philippines has a complex student union with different names such as student government and student council. Affairs. It is the foremost co-curricular student organization authorized to implement pertinent programs, projects, and activities in Philippine schools as mandated by the Department of Education.

The Problem Since the day that the researchers traipse on Santiago National High School, they began to wonder that the young school should extract leaders among its students. It should be done to secure the orderliness and peace within and beyond the school. For them to abridge deserving students among others, teachers should screen them to distinguish their strengths and

weaknesses, and after that process, selected students will enable to proceed to leading their costudents in a skilled and better way. This thesis is designed to know the benefits of leadership training in improving students skills and abilities. The study aims to answer the following questions: 1. What are the benefits of leadership training among students in Santiago National High School

in terms of abilities and skills? 2. What are different methods to be used by teachers of Santiago National High School in order to apply these leadership trainings? 3. What must be the guidelines to be followed and traits to be possessed in selecting students as leader? 4. What are the benefits of the following: a. Transactional Leadership? b. Autocratic Leadership? c. Bureaucratic Leadership? d. Charismatic Leadership? e. Democratic/Participative Leadership? f. Laissez-Faire Leadership? g. Task-Oriented Leadership? h. People-Oriented/Relations-Oriented Leadership? 5. What style is applicable to Santiago National High School?

The benefits of leadership training to students skills and knowledges are the following: (1) it widens the knowledge of students in issues related to leadership; (2) it can produce young leaders from students; (3) it can improve the manners and behaviors of students; and (4) it builds an interpersonal relations of students toward teachers. To apply these trainings, teachers can make activities for students where students find it instructive, entertaining and enjoyable. One example is the leadership camp. The ready-to-beleader students are the ones who will the head of his/her team and he/she will enhance his/her leadership skills by leading his/her team. It is an easy and cheaper way to held such trainings. Project may also be done so it will embellish not only knowledge about leadership but also their creativity and resourcefulness. A remarkable leader should possess the qualities such as good listener, curiosity, enable to gain feedback without burden, egoless, respectful toward others, mentally present, motivator, having self-confidence, and admit failures. Different leadership styles have each benefits. In Transactional Leadership, members can do little to improve their job satisfaction. It can feel stifling, and it can lead to high turnover. As for Autocratic Leadership, it's incredibly efficient, decisions are made quickly. For Bureaucratic Leadership, it is useful in organizations where students do routine tasks. The benefit of Charismatic Leadership is ones self-confidence increases because he/she most relies on himself/herself than on the team. In Democratic/Participative Leadership, team members become more productive because theyre more involve in decision-making. The main benefit of LaissezFaire Leadership is that members have freedom to do their own and it may increase their productivity. On the other hand, Task-Oriented Leadership has the benefit such as it ensures that

11

deadlines are met, and it's especially useful for members who don't manage their time well. In People-Oriented/Relations-Oriented Leadership, it creates teams that everyone wants to be part of. The members often more productive and willing to take risks, because they know that the leader will provide support if they need it. In Santiago National High School, the compatible style that suites for schools is the People-Oriented/Relations-Oriented Leadership, because in this style, people are focused on organizing, supporting, and developing the people on their teams. It resembles the Supreme Student Government (SSG) in Santiago National High School, which is a group of nominated students who leads the school into better governance and orderliness Objectives The following are the main objectives of the researcher study: 1. To pick/select students from different clubs or organizations that have the potentials to become a leader; 2. 3. 4. To conduct activities that will develop students self-confidence through leading; To enhance the leadership skills among studentsfor the sake of their future life; and To know the benefits that can be earned by students from leadership trainings.

12

CHAPTER III ACTION PLAN Organized planning and structured activities are the keys in finding the benefits of leadership trainings among students because by means of this, it will be easy to both teachers and students to tabulate the benefits of leadership trainings. Proper monitoring is needed to know how the benefits affect the students during the implementation. Data must be evaluated to determine how effective the training was. Innovations and some strategies are suggested to be integrated for better results of the trainings. The following is the action plan for the suggested activities for the enhancement of students leadership. It is just a researcher-made action plan for the proper implementation.
