Kanchipuram

Kanchipuram or Kancheepuram or Kanchi (previously romanized as Kci-pura, Conjevaram) is the administrative headquarters of Kanchipuram District in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu, India. Located on the banks of river Vegavathy, it served as the capital city of the Pallava Kingdom during the 4th to 9th century. Kanchipuram is located 72 kilometers from Chennai, the capital city of the state Tamil Nadu in India. Kanchipuram is believed to be of significant antiquity and has been ruled, at different times, by the Pallavas, Medieval Cholas, Later Cholas, Kanchipuramstood second in glory to Banaras in education and was also known as the ghatikasthanam or place of learning. Kanchipuram acted as a religious centre of advanced learning for Jainism and Buddhism during the 1st to 5th century. As per Hindu theology, Kanchipuram is one of the seven cities in India to reach final attainment. Kanchipuram is well known for its hand woven silk sarees and a majority of workforce in the city is involved in weaving industry

Economy
The traditional and major occupation of Kanchipuram is silk saree weaving followed by agriculture. As of 2008, an estimated 5000 families were involved in weaving silk sarees. The main industries of the city include cotton, light machinery, electrical goods and food processing.[ Two of the industrial parks, Sriperumbudur and Oragadam, located in the outskirts of Kanchipuram city, provide employment to majority of the industrial work force of Kanchipuram city.

Kanchipuram is a traditional centre of silk weaving and handloom for producing sari, called Kanchipuram Sari . In 2005, "Kanchipuram Silk Sarees" received the GI tag and became the first product in India to implement the security protocol, which includes jail and fine provisions for violators.

All major nationalized banks such as State Bank of India, Indian Bank, Canara Bank, Punjab National Bank, Dena Bank and private banks like ICICI Bank have their branches in Kanchipuram.[56] All these banks have their Automated teller machines located in various parts of the city.[56]

Transport
Road transport is the most accessible mode to reach Kanchipuram. The Chennai Bangalore National Highway, NH 4 passes on the outskirts of the city. The nearest domestic as well as international airport is Chennai International Airport, located at a distance of 72 km from the city. Electricity supply to the city is regulated and distributed by the Kanchipuram circle of TANGEDCO. Water supply is provided by the Kanchipuram municipality from the subterranean springs of Vegavati river

Education
Kanchipuram stood second in glory to Banaras in education. Kanchipuram in history was also known as the ghatikasthanam or place of learning. Kanchipuram acted as a religious centre of advanced learning for Jainism. Silappatikaram, the 2nd century Tamil literature has quotes of Kanchipuram being an advanced centre of learning. Modern Kanchipuram has 49 registered schools, with 16 of them run by the city municipality.. Larsen and Tubro inaugurated the first rail construction training centre in India at Kanchipuram on 2012 Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Viswa Mahavidyalaya and Chettinad Academy of Research and Education (CARE) are the two Deemed universities present in Kanchipuram. Kanchipuram is home to one of the four Indian Institute of Information of Technology, a public private partnered institute, offering under graduate and post graduate programs in information technology. TEMPLES IN KANCHIPURAM Kanchipuram is considered to be one of the seven holiest cities for Hindus in India. The city is considered a holy pilgrimage site for both Shaivites and Vaishnavites.[9] Ekambareswarar Temple is the largest temple in the city of Kanchipuram dedicated to Hindu god Shiva and is located in the northern part of the city. The temple is one of the five Pancha Bhoota Stalams representing the element earth.

Kailasanathar Temple, dedicated to Shiva and built by the Pallavas, is the oldest temple still in existence.
