Riverside Park hosting 41st annual EcoRide

Ann Arbors Riverside Park will host the 41st annual EcoRide 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 23 for a day of fun centering around bicycling and sustainability. The event features hundreds of cyclists riding 55-, 20-, 10- and 2-mile bike routes to different destinations and will showcase different assets of the area. This year will feature pop-up EcoArt galleries at farm tour stops, highlighting local artists whose work represents sustainability themes. The festival will also feature local food, art and educational kids activities, as well as nonprofit information tables, live music and a drum circle. Dragon Wagon, a local bluegrass folk rock band, will headline the event as a musical backdrop. Funds raised from EcoRide, including pledges from bicylists riding the event, go toward The Ecology Center, a nonprofit environmental agency in Ann Arbor advocating for a sustainable future. The event is sponsored by UAW, Resource Recycling Systems, Ann and Tom Hunt Family, Saint Joseph Mercy Health System, Michigan Commerce Bank, Whole Foods Market, Kleinschmidt Insurance Agency and Sunventrix. Only 1 percent of the thousands of charities rated have received at least nine consecutive 4-star evaluations, indicating that Food Gatherers outperforms most other charities in America. This exceptional designation from Charity Navigator differentiates Food Gatherers from its peers and demonstrates to the public it is worthy of their trust. In 2011, Charity Navigator added a second dimension of Accountability and Transparency (A&T) to its rating methodology, and now reviews 17 governance and ethical practices as well as measures of openness, providing information on its website for each of the charities it evaluates. The A&T metrics, which account for 50 percent of a charitys overall rating, reveal which charities have best practices that minimize the chance of unethical activities and whether they freely share basic information about their organization with their donors and other stakeholders. In the current economic environment, its important our donors trust that were using our funding wisely to accomplish our mission to alleviate hunger in Washtenaw County, said Eileen Spring, president and CEO of Food Gatherers. Our 4-star Charity Navigator rating demonstrates to our supporters that we take our fiduciary and governance responsibilities very seriously.
