The Customer TransCanada Corporation is a leader in the responsible development and reliable operation of North American energy infrastructure. Its wholly owned pipeline system of approximately 60,000-kilometres (37,000-miles) taps into virtually all major gas supply basins in North America and delivers to markets across Canada and the United States. In 2005 the company announced plans for its new Keystone Pipeline system, an innovative and cost-competitive solution to a growing North American demand for energy. Phase 1 of this project involved 3,461-kilometers (2,151 miles) of crude oil pipeline linking Alberta, Canada, with Patoka, Illinois, to supply U.S. Midwest markets. The Challenge The projects value proposition framed a high-return infrastructure that required a seamless, interwoven series of electronic systems. An ambitious implementation timetable was key to accommodating commercial commitments. TransCanada policy also calls for intense scrutiny of the

impacts of its projects on the pipeline community and environment. For the approval of regulators and community stakeholders alike, the company needed to present the high-profile Keystone Pipeline as one that would be designed for and implemented with optimum operations control and resulting in efficiency, safety, and protection of the many river basins through which it would pass. The Telvent Solution Telvent has supplied several gas transmission control solutions to TransCanada since the late 1990s; TransCanada turned to Telvent again to integrate the management of Keystone pipeline automation. Telvent supplied its distributed OASyS DNA 7.5 SCADA system to provide consistent monitoring of field devices and to automate control between field stations and system control center. The Telvent Liquids Management System (LMS) solution integrates with the SCADA and enterprise business applications, supplying pipeline and pump station measurements in near-real time to TransCanada business and financial processes.

Noteworthy in the Keystone Pipeline implementation is the utilization of Telvents SimSuite Pipeline transient pipeline modeling and simulation system. The application helped TransCanada present and validate the system design, implement leak detection capability, and initiate early operator training that would optimize safe pipeline implementation. TransCanada took particular advantage of the SimSuite Operator Trainer module, which gave controllers a realistic training environment months before line fill/ startup began. The Results The Telvent OASyS DNA 7.5 SCADA system collects pipeline measurement data, and the LMS interface between the SCADA and business applications streamlines processes and real-time operations support. SimSuite Pipeline application allowed early identification and improvement of controls, database, display, and application issues well before startup and assured qualification of controllers prior to start of commercial service. This approach helped the company meet its commitment to a well-controlled, safe implementation as well as an aggressive launch schedule. With Telvent expertise integrating the overall control system, the project saw minimum re-work of system elements and reduced commissioning time and effort. The SimSuite solution continues to support ongoing safe and reliable operations.
